CHAPTER 16 — The First Success

The words echoed through the mansion.
"You were our first success."
I stared at the black screen.
The woman was gone.
But her voice remained.
Not because it was loud.
Because it was familiar.
Too familiar.
Like a forgotten nightmare returning after years of silence.
Admiral Reed slowly lowered himself into a chair.
For the first time...
The man who had commanded armies looked powerless.
Nathan looked at him.
"Who is she?"
The admiral didn't answer.
"Admiral."
Still nothing.
I turned toward him.
"Tell me."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the warning beneath it.
"No more secrets."
Admiral Reed closed his eyes.
"Her name is Dr. Evelyn Voss."
The name meant nothing to me.
But the fear on everyone's faces meant everything.
Ethan stepped back.
"Voss?"
Admiral Reed looked at him.
"You know her?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Everyone inside Orion knew her."
A pause.
"They called her the architect."
"The architect of what?"
I asked.
Ethan looked at me.
"Of human prediction."
The room became colder.
Admiral Reed continued.
"Dr. Evelyn Voss believed humanity's greatest weakness was unpredictability."
"Love."
"Fear."
"Loyalty."
"Anger."
He looked at me.
"She believed emotions made people dangerous."
I understood immediately.
"She wanted to remove them."
Admiral Reed nodded.
"She wanted to create people who could make perfect decisions."
A pause.
"Without hesitation."
"Without attachment."
"Without weakness."
Nathan looked horrified.
"And Celeste?"
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
"She studied me."
I whispered.
Admiral Reed looked away.
"Yes."
The answer hurt more than I expected.
Because suddenly every memory from my childhood felt different.
The tests.
The questions.
The strange exercises my mother called "games."
The moments when adults watched me instead of talking to me.
I wasn't being raised.
I was being evaluated.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Celeste."
I looked at him.
"There is something else."
I almost laughed.
"Of course there is."
A lifetime of secrets.
One more wouldn't surprise me.
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He removed an old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
My hands froze.
It was me.
As a child.
Four years old.
Standing in a laboratory.
Wearing a small medical bracelet.
Behind me stood three people.
My mother.
Arthur.
And Dr. Evelyn Voss.
I looked at Ethan.
"Where did you get this?"
"From Orion."
My eyes returned to the photograph.
"Why?"
Ethan hesitated.
"Because they wanted me to understand something."
"What?"
His voice became quiet.
"You weren't their experiment."
A pause.
"You were their proof."
The room went silent.
The mansion shook.
A deep explosion outside.
Everyone moved instantly.
Years of training.
No hesitation.
No panic.
Admiral Reed looked at the security screen.
"They're inside the perimeter."
Nathan looked outside.
"How many?"
"Too many."
I picked up my weapon.
Ethan looked at me.
"You're going to fight?"
I looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I'm going to finish this."
The first wave entered through the eastern wing.
Professional.
Silent.
Organized.
Not soldiers.
Something worse.
People trained to obey without question.
Orion.
We moved through the mansion like we were back on a battlefield.
Ethan covered the hallway.
Nathan protected the files.
Admiral Reed coordinated defenses.
And I...
I led.
Not because I wanted power.
Because I had spent my entire life preparing for this moment.
A soldier stopped in front of me.
Young.
Terrified.
His weapon shook.
I saw it immediately.
He wasn't a monster.
He was someone controlled.
"What's your name?"
I asked.
The soldier froze.
Nobody had asked him that before.
"Unit Seven."
My expression hardened.
"That's not your name."
His eyes moved.
Confusion.
"They took it from you."
The man lowered his weapon slightly.
Behind him, another voice shouted:
"Do not listen to her!"
A commander stepped forward.
"She is the threat."
I looked at the soldier.
Then at the commander.
And I understood.
This was Evelyn Voss's world.
Remove identity.
Remove choice.
Create obedience.
I stepped forward.
"Ask yourself one question."
The soldier looked at me.
"Did you choose to be here?"
Silence.
The commander raised his weapon.
But before he could fire...
The soldier turned.
And lowered his gun.
For the first time...
One of them chose.
After the attack failed, we moved deeper into the mansion.
Because we knew.
They weren't here for us.
They were here for something.
The hidden archive.
My mother's final secret.
We found it beneath the old library.
A room nobody knew existed.
Inside...
Hundreds of files.
But one folder sat alone.
White.
No label.
Only one word.
CELESTE
I opened it.
Inside was a document dated twenty-three years earlier.
PROJECT CELESTE — FINAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT
The first sentence made my blood stop.
Subject has exceeded all predictions.
I continued reading.
Unlike previous subjects, Celeste Reed developed independent moral reasoning.
She cannot be programmed.
She cannot be conditioned.
She cannot be controlled.
Then came the handwritten notes.
My mother's handwriting.
"They wanted a perfect soldier."
"I wanted my daughter back."
My hands trembled.
The next page contained the truth.
The truth that changed everything.
PROJECT CELESTE WAS TERMINATED AT AGE SIX.
I froze.
"Age six?"
Ethan looked at the document.
"That means..."
Admiral Reed finished the sentence.
"You were removed from the project as a child."
I looked at the files.
"But why?"
The answer was written beneath.
REASON FOR TERMINATION: SUBJECT DEVELOPED EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT ABOVE ACCEPTABLE PARAMETERS.
I stared.
They didn't stop because I failed.
They stopped because I succeeded in the one thing they feared.
I became human.
Then another page fell from the folder.
A final note.
Not from my mother.
From Evelyn Voss.
"Eleanor made the same mistake every emotional person makes."
"She loved the subject."
A pause.
"Love created the flaw."
I turned the page.
My blood ran cold.
"Therefore, Phase Two will begin."
"Remove the family."
"Break the subject."
"Observe whether humanity survives trauma."
Below that...
A date.
The date of Black Tide.
I couldn't breathe.
Black Tide wasn't the beginning.
It was the final test.
Ethan looked at me.
"Celeste..."
I closed the folder.
My hands stopped shaking.
Because something inside me changed.
For years, I searched for the person who destroyed my life.
Now I knew.
They didn't destroy me.
They tried to prove I could be destroyed.
I looked at the files.
At the people who had controlled my entire existence.
And I whispered:
"They made one mistake."
Everyone looked at me.
I closed the folder.
"They studied how much pain a person could survive."
A pause.
"But they forgot to study what happens after."
Suddenly, every screen in the archive turned on.
Dr. Evelyn Voss appeared again.
But this time...
She wasn't smiling.
She looked almost afraid.
"Celeste."
I stared at her.
"Why are you afraid of me?"
For several seconds...
She said nothing.
Then:
"Because you were never supposed to remember."
The screen changed.
A final file appeared.
SUBJECT MEMORY RECOVERY: COMPLETE
My heart stopped.
Memory recovery?
Evelyn looked directly at me.
"The last thing your mother did before she died..."
A pause.
"Was not hiding the truth from you."
The screen flickered.
"She was hiding the truth inside you."
The archive went dark.
And for the first time...
May you like
I wondered if the memories I had lost...
Were the ones that could destroy everything.
