CHAPTER 15 — The Mother Who Left the Last Lie

The name remained on the screen.

ELEANOR REED

My mother's name.

The woman who taught me how to stand when the world pushed me down.

The woman whose voice was the first thing I remembered.

The woman whose last words to me were:

"Never let anyone decide who you are."

And now...

Her name was connected to the beginning of everything.

Black Tide.

Project Celeste.

The Orion Foundation.

The destruction of my life.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Nathan was the first to move.

"No."

He shook his head.

"No, that's impossible."

His voice became louder.

"She would never do that."

I looked at him.

For the first time...

I understood his reaction.

He wasn't defending my mother.

He was protecting the memory of his own.

Ethan stared at the screen.

"Arthur could be lying."

Admiral Reed turned sharply.

"Why would he?"

Ethan looked at him.

"Because he has spent years hiding the truth."

The words were harsh.

But they were true.

I walked toward the screen.

The image of my mother's name remained.

I touched the glass.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

I closed my eyes.

"My mother wasn't the kind of person who destroyed lives."

A pause.

"She spent her life saving them."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Celeste..."

I turned.

"Don't."

My voice was calm.

"Everyone keeps giving me reasons to hate people."

A pause.

"But nobody is asking the real question."

"What?"

Nathan asked.

I looked at the screen.

"Who benefits from making me believe my mother betrayed me?"

The room went silent.

Because that was the first question nobody had asked.

Admiral Reed slowly nodded.

"You're thinking like Eleanor."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"She always searched for the person who gained the most from chaos."

A pause.

"And right now..."

His expression darkened.

"Someone wants us fighting each other."

The encrypted drive suddenly activated.

Again.

A new file appeared.

ELEANOR REED — PERSONAL MESSAGE

My heart stopped.

Another message.

From my mother.

I pressed play.

The screen filled with her face.

Older recordings.

But this time...

She looked different.

Not afraid.

Determined.

"Celeste."

Her voice echoed through the room.

"If you are watching this, then someone has shown you evidence with my name attached."

I froze.

She knew.

She knew this would happen.

"I need you to understand something."

My mother's eyes looked directly into mine.

"Truth is the most dangerous weapon in the world."

A pause.

"Because once people believe a lie..."

"They will fight to protect it."

The video changed.

Documents appeared.

Secret meetings.

Financial transfers.

Military reports.

Then...

A familiar face.

Marcus Vale.

My mother continued.

"Marcus Vale was never my partner."

Everyone froze.

"He was my creation."

My breath caught.

"What?"

Nathan whispered.

The video continued.

"I found Marcus when he was a young officer."

"I believed he could help me protect people from organizations like Orion."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

Marcus's image appeared.

"You cannot build a shield without creating something people will try to use as a weapon."

My mother looked devastated.

"Marcus believed protection required control."

"I believed protection required freedom."

Two philosophies.

Two people.

One war.

Then the most shocking image appeared.

A document.

ORION FOUNDATION — FOUNDING MEMBERS

My eyes moved down the list.

Names.

Powerful people.

Government officials.

Business leaders.

Military commanders.

Then I saw it.

A name I knew.

A name that made my blood freeze.

ARTHUR REED

Nobody spoke.

The video continued.

"Your father joined Orion before he met me."

I turned slowly.

The empty space where Arthur's image had appeared earlier.

My father.

"At first, Arthur believed Orion could create peace."

My mother's voice became sad.

"But he discovered too late that peace was not their goal."

The screen changed.

Arthur meeting with Marcus.

Secret conversations.

My heart hurt.

My father had lied.

Again.

But then my mother said something unexpected.

"Arthur tried to leave."

Everyone looked confused.

"He attempted to expose Orion."

"That was why they targeted our family."

The video showed another file.

TARGET: REED FAMILY

My hands tightened.

"Wait."

I whispered.

"Target?"

Admiral Reed looked at the screen.

"The family was marked for elimination."

The video continued.

"My death was not because I betrayed them."

My mother's eyes filled with sadness.

"It was because I discovered their final plan."

A new document appeared.

PROJECT CELESTE: PHASE TWO

My blood ran cold.

The same title.

The same words.

But now...

A different purpose.

My mother continued:

"They don't want to control governments."

"They don't want money."

"They want something much more dangerous."

The screen displayed a phrase:

PERFECT PREDICTIVE CONTROL

Ethan whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

His face was pale.

"I saw this."

Everyone turned.

"Where?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Inside the Orion facility where they held me."

My heart tightened.

"What is it?"

Ethan answered:

"A system that predicts human decisions before they happen."

Silence.

Nathan frowned.

"That's impossible."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"They were close."

I looked at the files.

Suddenly everything connected.

The surveillance.

The experiments.

The tests.

The manipulation.

They weren't trying to control me because I was dangerous.

They were trying to understand why I couldn't be controlled.

My mother continued.

"Celeste, if you are watching this..."

"Then the system is active."

A pause.

"And you are the only person they cannot predict."

The room became silent.

Then the final message appeared.

Not from my mother.

From someone else.

A hidden audio file.

A man's voice.

Marcus.

"Eleanor."

A recording of a conversation.

"I know what you're doing."

My mother's voice answered.

"Then you know why I have to."

Marcus laughed.

"You really believe your daughter can defeat us?"

A pause.

My mother's answer was quiet.

"I don't believe."

"I know."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then the mansion alarm activated.

Red lights flashed.

Admiral Reed looked at the security monitor.

His face changed.

"What is it?"

I asked.

He didn't answer.

I walked toward the screen.

Outside the mansion gates...

Hundreds of vehicles surrounded the property.

Military.

Police.

Private security.

Everyone.

Nathan stared.

"They found us."

A message appeared on the main screen.

Not Marcus.

Not Victoria.

Someone else.

A woman.

An older woman.

A woman I had never seen.

But everyone else recognized her.

Admiral Reed whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"Who is she?"

His face lost all color.

"She's the head of the Special Intelligence Council."

A pause.

"The person who created Orion."

The woman smiled at the camera.

"Celeste Reed."

Her voice was calm.

"You have spent your entire life searching for the person who destroyed your family."

A pause.

"But you never asked yourself..."

"Why were you allowed to survive?"

The screen changed.

A childhood photograph appeared.

Me.

Four years old.

Standing beside my mother.

And beside us...

Was the woman on the screen.

The woman continued:

"Because, Celeste..."

"You were never our enemy."

A pause.

"You were our first success."

The screen went black.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wondered if my entire life had been a choice...

Or a design.
