Chapter 5 - What Thomas Pierce Knew

The archive facility smelled of dust, metal, and forgotten paper.
Unit 317 was located behind three rows of decommissioned legal storage.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Christopher opened the door.
Inside were twelve gray boxes.
Each carried his father's handwriting.
The first box contained trust documents.
The second contained letters.
The third changed Christopher's understanding of his father forever.
Thomas Pierce had known Rachel.
Not casually.
Not through Christopher.
He had hired her.
Rachel had been an external financial analyst reviewing one of Pierce Global's shipping subsidiaries.
During that review, she discovered irregular transactions.
Millions moving through shell corporations.
False consulting invoices.
Property purchases disguised as logistics expenses.
And every trail led back to an executive authorization code.
EP-01.
Estelle Pierce.
Christopher sat on the concrete floor.
Naomi stood beside him.
“This wasn't about Emma.”
Christopher looked at the papers.
“No.”
“It was about Rachel.”
He read a letter from his father.
Rachel,
I believe you are correct.
Estelle has used company-controlled entities to move family assets beyond the trust.
If exposed, the board will be forced to investigate.
Do not confront her.
Christopher's hands tightened.
Thomas had known.
He had been gathering evidence.
But he died before he acted.
A stroke.
Sudden.
Natural.
At least according to the official record.
Naomi opened another box.
“Christopher.”
Inside was a signed trust amendment.
Thomas Pierce had added a protection clause.
If a direct descendant was deliberately concealed or unlawfully deprived of inheritance rights, that descendant would receive an enhanced voting interest upon verification.
Naomi looked stunned.
“This is enormous.”
“How enormous?”
“If valid, Emma doesn't simply receive a future inheritance.”
She looked at him.
“She becomes the largest individual beneficiary in the family trust.”
Christopher stared at the signature.
Emma.
Eight years old.
Afraid of being unwanted.
Legally positioned to control the fortune everyone was fighting over.
The irony was sickening.
Then Naomi found the final letter.
It was addressed to Christopher.
Son,
If you ever read this, I failed to do what I should have done while I still had time.
Christopher stopped.
Thomas confessed that he had helped Estelle bury Rachel's pregnancy at first.
He had believed he was protecting Christopher from scandal.
Later, he realized Estelle was not protecting the family.
She was protecting control.
I mistook silence for loyalty.
Do not repeat my mistake.
May you like
Christopher closed his eyes.
He already had.
