Chapter 2 - Rachel's Envelope

Christopher did not attend the emergency board meeting.
For the first time in his career, he chose Emma over Pierce Global.
That decision cost him immediately.
By six the next morning, three directors had called.
By seven, reporters were outside the hospital.
By eight, the first headline appeared.
PIERCE HEIR SUFFERS PRIVATE FAMILY CRISIS.
Christopher almost threw the phone across the room.
Private family crisis.
His daughter had nearly died.
His mother was trying to remove him from his company.
His fiancée was being questioned by detectives.
And the press called it a crisis.
Yvette arrived shortly after sunrise.
She carried a worn leather handbag.
Christopher met her in the hallway.
“You should be resting.”
“So should you.”
She studied his face.
“You look like your father the night he finally understood your mother.”
Christopher frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Yvette opened her handbag.
Inside was a yellowed envelope.
Rachel Monroe's name was written across the front.
Christopher stopped breathing.
“Where did you get that?”
“Rachel gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Six weeks before she died.”
Christopher stared at her.
“You've had this for years?”
“Yes.”
Anger flashed through him.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because she told me not to.”
“Rachel is dead.”
Yvette's voice softened.
“And she was terrified.”
Christopher looked through the hospital window at Emma.
“Open it.”
Inside were three things.
A handwritten letter.
A photograph.
And a small brass key.
Christopher recognized the photograph immediately.
Rachel stood in front of a red brick building.
She was pregnant.
Beside her stood Christopher's father, Thomas Pierce.
The date printed on the back was three months before Emma's birth.
Christopher felt the hallway shift beneath him.
“My father knew.”
Yvette nodded.
“He knew more than you think.”
Christopher unfolded the letter.
The first sentence nearly broke him.
Christopher,
If you are reading this, then something happened before I could tell you the truth myself.
His hands tightened.
Rachel wrote that Thomas Pierce had discovered Emma's existence before Estelle did.
He had secretly met Rachel.
He had apologized for the way the Pierce family had treated her.
Then he had made a promise.
Emma would never be left with nothing.
Thomas had amended part of the family trust.
But he had not filed the amendment immediately.
He feared Estelle would challenge it.
Instead, he placed the signed original somewhere only Rachel could identify.
The letter ended with one sentence.
The key opens what your father was too afraid to carry home.
Christopher stared at the brass key.
There was a small engraving.
P-317.
Yvette touched his wrist.
“There is something else.”
Christopher looked up.
“Rachel didn't believe she was being threatened because of the pregnancy.”
“What?”
“She believed she had discovered something inside Pierce Global.”
Christopher's eyes narrowed.
“What kind of thing?”
“She never told me.”
“Then why mention it?”
“Because three days before she died, she said something I have never forgotten.”
Yvette's face had gone pale.
“She said, ‘If they can't erase the records, they'll erase the person who found them.’”
Christopher stared at her.
Rachel had died in a highway accident.
A tire failure.
Rain.
A guardrail.
An investigation that lasted four days.
He had accepted it.
Everyone had.
Now he wondered whether he had accepted it because the truth had been too painful.
Or because somebody powerful had made sure there was no other truth to find.
His phone vibrated.
Alexander.
Christopher answered.
“Chris.”
His brother sounded exhausted.
“They postponed the removal vote.”
“Why?”
“I threatened to walk.”
Christopher was surprised.
Alexander had spent his entire adult life avoiding confrontation with Estelle.
“Thank you.”
“Don't thank me yet.”
Alexander lowered his voice.
“Mother is challenging Emma's legal status.”
Christopher went cold.
“What?”
“She says there's no valid proof Emma is your biological child.”
“She knows there is.”
“She says the records are unreliable.”
Christopher looked at Rachel's letter.
Alexander continued.
“She filed for an emergency review of the Pierce family trust.”
Christopher understood.
If Estelle could invalidate Emma's status as his daughter, she could remove Emma's rights before the evidence became public.
“Alexander.”
“Yes?”
“Do you know what P-317 means?”
Silence.
Then:
“No.”
“Find out.”
“Chris, what are you doing?”
Christopher looked at the brass key.
“Something I should have done years ago.”
He ended the call.
Behind him, Emma stirred.
Christopher went back into the room.
She opened her eyes.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
She reached for his hand.
He sat beside her.
Emma looked frightened.
“Is Grandma mad at me?”
Christopher felt something inside him turn to steel.
“No.”
May you like
He brushed wet hair from her forehead.
“Grandma is going to learn that being powerful and being right are not the same thing.”
