CHAPTER 8 — The Forged Report That Almost Stole My Daughter

The words hit me harder than any accusation that night.

"The medical report was forged."

For eighteen months, I had carried the weight of those pages.

Eighteen months of wondering if maybe Daniel was right.

Maybe I had failed.

Maybe I worked too much.

Maybe I wasn't enough.

And now...

the truth was standing in front of me.

It had all been manufactured.

A lie.

A carefully designed weapon.

Thomas placed the document on the table.

"The report was submitted during the initial custody discussions."

My hands shook as I picked it up.

I remembered seeing it.

The doctor's name.

The statements.

The words that had destroyed my confidence.

Emotional instability.

Exhaustion affecting parenting ability.

Concerns regarding the child's environment.

I had cried the first time I read it.

Not because I believed Daniel.

Because I was terrified that someone might believe him.

A mother can survive many things.

But being told she is dangerous to her own child...

is a different kind of pain.

I looked at Thomas.

"Who made it?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That scared me more.

"Thomas."

His expression became serious.

"The signature belongs to a doctor."

My heart sank.

"Which doctor?"

He turned the paper around.

I looked down.

And my breath stopped.

The name was familiar.

Too familiar.

Dr. Adrian Wells.

Daniel's family physician.

The same man who treated Emily when she was sick.

The same man who attended Daniel's charity events.

The same man who always told me:

"Daniel is lucky to have a family like this."

I felt sick.

Daniel immediately spoke.

"I had nothing to do with that."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You denied involvement before I accused you."

Daniel froze.

A few guests exchanged looks.

Thomas continued.

"Normally, someone innocent asks what evidence exists."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You're twisting my words."

"No."

Thomas calmly closed the folder.

"I'm observing your reaction."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Adrian only helped because he believed Emily needed stability."

I turned toward her.

"Stability?"

My voice became colder.

"You mean removing her from her mother?"

Vanessa looked away.

And that told me everything.

Then Emily spoke.

"Mom..."

I looked down.

Her eyes were wet.

"Did Daddy really think I was unsafe with you?"

The question broke me.

Because she wasn't asking about the court.

She wasn't asking about the documents.

She was asking why her father believed the worst about the person who loved her most.

I knelt beside her.

"No, sweetheart."

I held her face gently.

"Your daddy made a choice."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"Why?"

I didn't have an answer.

Because sometimes children deserve honesty.

But they don't deserve the full cruelty of adults.

"Sometimes grown-ups make wrong choices because they forget what matters."

Emily looked at Daniel.

And for the first time...

he looked ashamed.

Thomas's phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

Then his expression changed.

"We found something else."

Daniel immediately reacted.

"What?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Your messages with Dr. Wells."

The room went silent.

"What messages?" Daniel asked.

Thomas handed the phone to the hotel manager.

A copy of the messages appeared on the screen.

The first one was dated two months before the wedding.

Daniel: "I need the report to support my custody request."

The second:

Dr. Wells: "What exactly do you want me to write?"

The third:

Daniel: "Something that makes Claire look unstable."

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Someone covered their mouth.

Someone else whispered:

"That's disgusting."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No."

He shook his head.

"No, that's not the full conversation."

Thomas looked at him.

"You're right."

A pause.

"It isn't."

Everyone waited.

Thomas displayed another message.

One sent from Daniel.

The final message.

The one that changed everything.

Daniel: "Once custody is transferred, Claire won't be able to interfere anymore."

My stomach dropped.

Interfere.

That was how he saw me.

Not Emily's mother.

An obstacle.

Vanessa suddenly became nervous.

"Daniel..."

He ignored her.

Because now he understood.

The evidence was no longer against me.

It was against him.

Thomas stepped closer.

"You didn't want custody because you wanted to be a better father."

He looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"You wanted control."

Daniel's fists tightened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

Thomas answered calmly.

"I know enough."

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A woman walked in.

She looked exhausted.

Almost afraid.

Everyone turned.

Thomas recognized her.

"Dr. Wells."

The room froze.

The doctor who had written the report had arrived.

Daniel looked relieved.

"Adrian, tell them."

The doctor looked at him.

And slowly shook his head.

"I'm sorry, Daniel."

The relief disappeared from Daniel's face.

The doctor continued:

"I can't lie for you anymore."

The entire room went silent.

She walked toward the center.

"I didn't write that report."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Dr. Wells looked at me.

"I'm sorry, Claire."

She swallowed.

"I was forced to sign it."

Daniel whispered:

"Adrian..."

But she continued.

"Because Daniel threatened to destroy my career."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then she said the words that changed the entire case:

"But the worst part..."

She looked at Emily.

"...is that the custody plan was never designed to help this child."

A pause.

"It was designed to make her disappear from Claire's life completely."

Emily grabbed my hand.

And I realized something.

The wedding wasn't just a trap.

The custody case wasn't just a lie.

Daniel had been preparing this attack long before anyone entered that ballroom.

But what he didn't know...

was that Dr. Wells had one final piece of evidence.

May you like

Something Daniel had done before the divorce.

Something that would reveal why he really abandoned us.
