CHAPTER 12 — The Woman Who Built the Perfect Lie

The name on the screen remained visible.

VANESSA CARTER.

Not Brooks.

Not the elegant bride everyone thought they knew.

Carter.

The same last name Daniel carried.

The same last name that appeared on every document connected to his hidden empire.

The ballroom went silent.

A silence heavier than before.

Because everyone had spent the entire night believing Vanessa was Daniel's partner.

His accomplice.

The woman standing beside him.

But now another possibility appeared.

She wasn't just helping him.

She was connected to him.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His face had gone completely blank.

"That's impossible."

Thomas looked at him.

"Is it?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Thomas calmly replied.

"I understand exactly."

He pointed toward the evidence.

"Bank accounts."

"Hidden transfers."

"Shell companies."

"False identities."

A pause.

"All connected to Vanessa Carter."

Vanessa didn't speak.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because someone innocent would deny it.

Someone innocent would scream.

Someone innocent would demand answers.

But Vanessa just stood there.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

I looked at her.

"Who are you?"

Her eyes moved toward me.

For a second...

I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

Real regret.

"Claire..."

"Don't."

My voice shook.

"Don't say my name like we're friends."

The woman who had smiled at my daughter.

The woman who had adjusted Emily's flower basket.

The woman who had stood beside me pretending to care...

was part of the reason my child had been humiliated.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I never wanted Emily hurt."

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"But she was."

Silence.

"She stood in front of hundreds of people while everyone thought she was a thief."

Vanessa swallowed.

"I know."

"Then why?"

The question came from me.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Just pain.

"Why would you do that to a child?"

For the first time all night...

Vanessa looked broken.

"Because Daniel made me believe there was no other way."

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"Don't do this."

Vanessa ignored him.

"He told me Claire was dangerous."

My eyes narrowed.

"He told me you were unstable."

She looked at me.

"He told me Emily needed protection."

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

"I believed him."

Thomas stepped forward.

"You believed him?"

Vanessa looked at the evidence.

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"I believed the version of himself he created."

She looked at Daniel.

"And then I found out the truth."

Daniel's expression changed.

"When?"

"Six months ago."

A murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa continued.

"I found the hidden accounts."

She looked at Thomas.

"The same accounts you discovered."

Daniel's voice became dangerous.

"Vanessa."

But she kept talking.

"I found payments to Dr. Wells."

I froze.

"The fake report?"

She nodded.

"I didn't know at first."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I thought it was just a custody fight."

A pause.

"Then I saw the messages."

Thomas asked:

"What messages?"

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"The ones where he talked about removing Claire."

Everyone became still.

"Removing?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Not from custody."

She looked at me.

"From their lives."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Because suddenly I remembered.

The strange phone calls.

The anonymous messages.

The feeling that someone was watching us after the divorce.

I had always thought I was imagining it.

I wasn't.

Vanessa continued.

"Daniel didn't want Emily because he missed her."

She looked at him.

"He wanted Emily because she was the last connection to the truth."

Thomas frowned.

"What truth?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

"The company."

Daniel's face changed.

Everyone noticed.

"What company?"

Thomas asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Before Daniel became successful..."

She paused.

"...he used someone else's money."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that have to do with Emily?"

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"Everything."

Thomas opened another file.

Inside were old business documents.

He studied them.

Then looked shocked.

"These records..."

He looked at Ethan.

"Are yours."

Ethan stepped forward.

"What?"

Thomas handed him the papers.

"This company was originally registered under your name."

The room erupted.

Ethan looked at the documents.

"I don't understand."

Vanessa spoke quietly.

"Daniel stole your company."

Everyone froze.

I looked at Ethan.

The man who had spent eight years searching for his daughter.

The man who had been erased.

The man Daniel had tried to destroy.

Suddenly everything connected.

Ethan wasn't just Emily's father.

He was the person Daniel had feared most.

Daniel finally exploded.

"Enough!"

His voice echoed through the ballroom.

"You all think you know everything?"

He looked around.

"You don't know what I sacrificed."

Thomas stared at him.

"You sacrificed other people's lives."

Daniel pointed at Ethan.

"He abandoned Claire!"

Ethan's expression hardened.

"No."

Daniel shouted:

"You disappeared!"

Ethan stepped forward.

"Because you made me disappear."

The argument stopped when Emily spoke.

"Daddy Daniel..."

Everyone froze.

It was the first time she had called him that since the truth came out.

Daniel looked hopeful for one second.

Then she continued.

"Why did you lie so much?"

His face collapsed.

Because there was no answer a child could accept.

Suddenly, the ballroom doors opened.

Two investigators entered.

Thomas looked at them.

"You're early."

One of them held a folder.

"We found the final evidence."

Daniel's face changed.

"What evidence?"

The investigator looked directly at him.

"The recording from the night Ethan disappeared."

My heart stopped.

The room went silent.

Ethan whispered:

"You found it?"

The investigator nodded.

"We found the original recording."

A pause.

"And it proves Daniel didn't just threaten you."

Everyone held their breath.

"He tried to make sure you never came back."

Emily grabbed my hand.

Daniel stepped backward.

For the first time...

he looked like someone who knew the end had arrived.

But before the investigators could reveal the recording...

Vanessa whispered something that shocked everyone.

"I know where the original file is."

Thomas turned.

"Where?"

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

And said:

"He hid it inside the one place nobody would ever search."

A pause.

"The house where Claire and Emily lived."

The truth had been buried for eight years.

May you like

But now...

it was coming home.
