CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Behind the Missing Necklace

The hotel manager's words hung in the air.

"The necklace was already missing before Emily entered the ballroom."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because that one sentence destroyed the entire story Daniel and Vanessa had built.

The accusation.

The humiliation.

The search.

Everything had been based on a lie.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had lost all color.

"That's impossible."

The hotel manager remained calm.

"I reviewed the security footage from the entire afternoon."

He opened the folder in his hands.

"The necklace was last confirmed in Mrs. Brooks' possession at 3:42 p.m."

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"That can't be right."

The manager looked at her.

"Why?"

Her mouth opened.

But no words came out.

And everyone noticed.

She had just exposed herself.

Because an innocent person would ask what happened.

A guilty person would argue with the evidence.

Daniel noticed too.

His eyes moved between Vanessa and the folder.

"Vanessa..."

She turned toward him.

"Daniel, don't look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you think I did something."

The desperation in her voice was real.

But not because she was innocent.

Because she was losing control.

The woman who had spent months controlling every image, every photograph, every public appearance...

was finally trapped.

The hotel manager continued.

"The first security camera shows Mrs. Brooks entering the bridal suite at 3:15 p.m."

The screen changed.

A new video appeared.

Vanessa walking into the room.

Alone.

She was wearing the necklace.

Several guests leaned closer.

Then another timestamp appeared.

3:42 p.m.

The door opened.

Vanessa walked out.

But the necklace was gone.

A wave of whispers filled the ballroom.

"Where did it go?"

"Did she remove it?"

"Why would she blame the child?"

Daniel stared at the screen.

His jaw tightened.

"Vanessa..."

She turned sharply.

"Don't."

The warning in her voice surprised everyone.

Even Daniel.

"Don't what?"

"Don't start pretending you care."

The room became silent.

Because for a moment...

the mask slipped.

Daniel looked hurt.

But I couldn't feel sorry for him.

Not anymore.

A man who watched his daughter be accused did not get to suddenly become the victim.

The hotel manager switched to another clip.

"This is from the hallway camera."

The video showed Vanessa leaving the bridal suite.

She looked around.

Then she walked toward the children's preparation area.

Everyone stared.

Because they already knew what came next.

The camera showed Emily standing by the table.

The same moment Vanessa placed something into the basket.

But this time...

the footage continued.

After Vanessa walked away, another person entered the room.

A man.

Wearing a black suit.

Daniel's best friend, Marcus.

The ballroom erupted again.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Wait. I can explain."

Nobody looked surprised anymore.

They had seen enough.

Daniel turned toward him.

"What were you doing there?"

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"I was asked to help."

"By who?"

Silence.

Daniel's face changed.

"By who, Marcus?"

The man looked at Vanessa.

And that was the answer.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Not a happy laugh.

A defeated one.

"You all think you understand what happened?"

Nobody responded.

She looked at Daniel.

"You wanted a perfect wedding."

Her voice became colder.

"You wanted everyone to believe you were a devoted father."

Daniel froze.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You think I was the only one hiding things?"

The room went silent.

My stomach tightened.

Because this was no longer just about a necklace.

This was about something much bigger.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"You really think Daniel invited you and Emily here because he wanted to rebuild his relationship with his daughter?"

Emily held my hand tighter.

I felt her fear.

"Don't listen to her," I whispered.

But Vanessa continued.

"Tell her, Daniel."

He looked away.

"Tell Claire why you really wanted Emily at this wedding."

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is she talking about?"

Daniel said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

The man who had begged his daughter to attend.

The man who had smiled for cameras.

The man who claimed he wanted to fix their relationship...

had another reason.

The hotel manager looked at me with sympathy.

Then he handed me another document.

"Mrs. Carter..."

I opened it.

And the first line made my hands shake.

GUARDIANSHIP MODIFICATION REQUEST.

Filed three weeks before the wedding.

My eyes moved lower.

Daniel's name.

Vanessa's name.

And the request:

Full custody transfer of Emily Carter.

I couldn't breathe.

They hadn't invited my daughter to celebrate a wedding.

They had invited her to create a story.

A story where I looked unstable.

Where Emily looked like a problem.

Where Daniel looked like the father who "saved" his child.

Vanessa whispered:

"The necklace was only the beginning."

I looked at Daniel.

And for the first time...

I understood.

The wedding wasn't a celebration.

May you like

It was a trap.

And my daughter was never supposed to leave that ballroom with me.
