CHAPTER 17 — The Man Who Was Paid to Bury the Truth

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Because for eight years, everyone had believed the same story.

Ethan left.

Ethan abandoned us.

Ethan chose not to return.

But the truth was finally standing in front of us.

He didn't leave.

He was forced away.

And someone had been paid to make sure he disappeared forever.

Thomas looked directly at Rachel.

"Who did Daniel hire?"

Rachel's hands began shaking.

"I don't know his real name."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You don't know?"

She looked at him with tears.

"Daniel never used names."

A pause.

"He used a nickname."

"What nickname?"

Rachel swallowed.

"The Ghost."

The room went silent.

Thomas exchanged a look with the investigator.

"You've heard of him?"

The investigator nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Everyone turned.

"Who is he?"

The investigator opened his folder.

"An underground fixer."

A pause.

"Someone hired when people want problems to disappear."

My heart sank.

"You're saying Daniel hired someone to kill Ethan?"

The investigator didn't answer immediately.

But his silence said enough.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

For eight years, he had carried the pain of believing he lost everything.

His family.

His daughter.

His future.

And now he knew someone had tried to erase him completely.

Daniel suddenly laughed.

A nervous, broken laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

Nobody moved.

"You actually believe her?"

He pointed at Rachel.

"She is a liar."

Rachel looked at him.

And something changed.

The fear disappeared.

"You taught me how to lie."

Daniel froze.

Rachel stepped forward.

"For eight years, I protected you."

Her voice cracked.

"I told myself I was doing the right thing."

A pause.

"But every time I looked at Claire raising Emily alone..."

She shook her head.

"I knew I wasn't protecting anyone."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You have no proof."

Thomas immediately answered.

"Actually, we do."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas took out another file.

"The investigators found a payment trail."

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

Thomas continued.

"Eight years ago, a large transfer was made from one of Daniel's private accounts."

He looked at Ethan.

"The amount matched a known payment pattern used by the Ghost."

Ethan closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was impossible to hide.

Then Thomas placed another document down.

"There's more."

A photograph.

Old.

Blurry.

But clear enough.

Daniel standing outside a parking garage.

Meeting a man.

Rachel covered her mouth.

"That's him."

Thomas looked at her.

"The Ghost?"

She nodded.

I stared at the picture.

"How do we find him?"

Nobody answered.

Until Ethan spoke.

"I know where he is."

Everyone turned.

I looked at him.

"You do?"

Ethan looked down.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Because he found me."

The room froze.

Eight years ago...

the night everyone thought Ethan vanished...

he survived.

But surviving had a cost.

Ethan continued.

"After Daniel's men attacked me, I escaped."

His voice became quieter.

"I spent months trying to return."

I held my breath.

"Why didn't you?"

He looked at me.

"Because every time I got close..."

A pause.

"Someone reminded me that Daniel was watching you."

My eyes filled.

"He threatened us?"

Ethan nodded.

"He showed me pictures of you and Emily."

The room became silent.

"He told me if I came back, you would lose everything."

I covered my mouth.

Because all those years...

I thought Ethan abandoned us.

But he had been protecting us.

From a distance.

Emily appeared at the doorway again.

She had heard enough.

"Ethan..."

He turned.

"Did you really want to come back?"

The question broke him.

He knelt down.

"Every single day."

Emily stared at him.

"Then why didn't you?"

Ethan wiped his eyes.

"Because I thought being far away was the only way to keep you safe."

Emily didn't answer.

But she walked closer.

And slowly...

she held his hand.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes forgiveness doesn't happen with words.

Sometimes it starts with a small gesture.

Then the investigator's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

"What happened?" Thomas asked.

The investigator looked at Ethan.

"We found him."

Everyone froze.

"The Ghost?"

The investigator nodded.

"Yes."

A silence.

"Where?"

The investigator looked at the report.

"At a private security facility outside the city."

Thomas frowned.

"Why would he stay there?"

The investigator looked uncomfortable.

"Because he wasn't hiding."

A pause.

"He was working."

My heart sank.

"For who?"

The investigator looked at Daniel.

"Daniel Carter."

Daniel's face went pale.

But then something unexpected happened.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I know him."

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

"I know the Ghost."

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at her.

"How?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Because he wasn't just Daniel's employee."

A pause.

"He was Daniel's insurance."

Nobody moved.

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?"

She looked toward Daniel.

And said the words that changed everything:

"Daniel didn't hire the Ghost to make Ethan disappear."

A pause.

"He hired him because he knew one day Ethan would come back."

My blood ran cold.

"Then what was the plan?"

Vanessa looked at Emily.

And her voice trembled.

"The plan was never to erase Ethan."

Silence.

"The plan was to erase everyone who knew the truth."

Everyone froze.

Because suddenly we understood.

Daniel's plan wasn't ending.

It was escalating.

May you like

And the person who knew how far he was willing to go...

was the man they were about to meet.
