CHAPTER 6 — The Witness Who Knew Everything

The ballroom doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Every eye turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

He wasn't dressed like the wealthy guests surrounding him.

No expensive tuxedo.

No designer watch.

Just a dark suit, a leather folder in his hand, and an expression that said he had walked into the room knowing exactly what he would find.

Daniel's face changed instantly.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

A wave of confusion moved through the crowd.

I didn't know that name.

But Daniel did.

And judging by his reaction...

he knew this man could destroy everything.

The stranger walked slowly into the ballroom.

"I'm sorry for interrupting your wedding."

His eyes moved across the room.

Then stopped on Emily.

His expression softened.

"Especially for interrupting this little girl's nightmare."

My heart tightened.

Who was he?

Daniel stepped forward.

"This is a private family matter."

The man didn't even look at him.

"No, Daniel."

His voice was calm.

"It's no longer private."

He opened the folder.

"Not after you involved the police, hotel security, and attempted to create a false custody case against an innocent child."

The guests gasped.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

The man finally looked at him.

"I know exactly what I'm talking about."

He removed a business card and handed it to the hotel manager.

"Thomas Whitmore."

The manager's eyes widened.

"You're..."

He stopped himself.

But everyone noticed.

The man was someone important.

Very important.

I looked at him.

"Who are you?"

He turned toward me.

And his expression became gentler.

"Someone who owes your daughter the truth."

Emily looked confused.

"Do I know you?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No, sweetheart."

Then he glanced at Daniel.

"But your father knows me."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"Don't involve her."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"Interesting."

"An hour ago, you had no problem involving her when you accused her of theft."

The room went silent.

Daniel had no response.

Thomas placed a small envelope on the table.

"Three weeks ago, I received a phone call."

He looked at Daniel.

"From you."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Thomas continued.

"You asked me to provide a professional evaluation that would support your custody request."

My stomach dropped.

Daniel's face turned pale.

"You agreed to help."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"I agreed to investigate."

He opened the envelope.

"And what I discovered was not what you expected."

The room became completely silent.

Thomas pulled out several photographs.

"I reviewed the evidence you provided."

He placed the first photo on the table.

A picture of Daniel and Emily at a park.

Daniel looked proud.

"This was submitted as proof of your active involvement as a father."

He placed another photo beside it.

A timestamp.

A date.

"However, this photo was taken eight months before the divorce."

A murmur spread through the room.

Thomas placed another document down.

"And these messages..."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"...show that you asked Claire to bring Emily to your wedding because you believed it would improve your public image."

My hands shook.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Because it was true.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous."

Thomas turned toward her.

"Mrs. Brooks."

The way he said her name made her stop.

"You should be more careful."

Her face changed.

"Careful about what?"

"About leaving evidence behind."

Nobody moved.

Thomas pulled out a flash drive.

"The hotel security footage was not the only recording from today."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying..."

Thomas placed the drive on the table.

"...the cameras showed more than Vanessa placing the handkerchief in Emily's basket."

A cold feeling ran through me.

"What else did they show?"

Thomas looked at me.

"They showed the conversation between Daniel and Vanessa before the ceremony."

Daniel's expression changed completely.

"That footage doesn't exist."

Thomas gave a small smile.

"That's where you're wrong."

The hotel manager stepped forward.

"I requested a complete backup of all security footage after the necklace incident."

Thomas nodded.

"Because something about the accusation felt staged."

He looked around the room.

"And now everyone will hear what was really planned."

The ballroom lights dimmed again.

The screen turned on.

Everyone watched.

The footage began.

The bridal suite.

Daniel and Vanessa.

Alone.

Talking.

Their voices filled the ballroom.

Vanessa appeared on screen.

"Are you sure this will work?"

Daniel answered.

"She'll look irresponsible."

Vanessa smiled.

"And Emily?"

Daniel paused.

Then said:

"People believe what they see."

My blood froze.

The room gasped.

On the screen, Vanessa asked:

"What if Claire fights back?"

Daniel laughed.

"She won't."

A long silence followed.

Then his final words echoed through the ballroom.

"By tomorrow morning, everyone will think Claire is the reason my daughter needs saving."

Emily covered her ears.

"Mom..."

I pulled her close.

"It's okay."

But this time, I wasn't speaking to comfort her.

I was speaking to myself.

Because the truth was finally out.

The man who claimed he wanted to protect his daughter...

had planned to destroy her mother.

The video stopped.

Nobody looked at Daniel anymore.

They looked at him like they were seeing a stranger.

Thomas closed the folder.

"Daniel Carter."

His voice became firm.

"You are no longer dealing with a family disagreement."

A pause.

"You are dealing with evidence of manipulation, fraud, and an attempt to damage a child's life."

Daniel stepped backward.

For the first time all night...

he looked powerless.

But then Vanessa whispered something.

Something that made Daniel turn toward her.

Something that changed everything.

"Daniel..."

Her voice shook.

"They're not supposed to know about the second plan."

The room froze.

I looked at her.

"Second plan?"

Vanessa's face went white.

May you like

Because she had just revealed...

the necklace and custody battle were only the beginning.
