CHAPTER 18 â The Man Who Knew Daniel's Final Move

The words haunted the room.
"The plan was to erase everyone who knew the truth."
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the entire story looked different.
The wedding.
The necklace.
The custody case.
The hidden rooms.
The forged documents.
They weren't separate crimes.
They were pieces of one carefully designed plan.
A plan that had been running for eight years.
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
"You knew this entire time?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"I knew Daniel was dangerous."
A pause.
"But I didn't understand how far he would go."
Ethan stared at her.
"Then why did you stay?"
The question was simple.
But it carried eight years of pain.
Vanessa looked down.
"Because I was afraid."
She swallowed.
"And because I thought I could control him."
A bitter smile appeared on Ethan's face.
"Nobody controls Daniel."
Vanessa didn't argue.
Because she knew he was right.
The investigator gathered the documents.
"We need to find the Ghost before Daniel has time to move."
Thomas nodded.
"Agreed."
He looked at Daniel.
"Where is he?"
Daniel remained silent.
For the first time, he looked less like a powerful businessman...
and more like a man trapped by his own secrets.
Thomas stepped closer.
"You spent eight years protecting him."
Daniel said nothing.
"You paid him."
Still nothing.
"You used him."
Silence.
Then Daniel smiled.
A small, cold smile.
"You think catching him changes anything?"
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel continued.
"You think the Ghost is the final piece?"
He laughed softly.
"No."
My stomach tightened.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel looked at me.
"You still don't understand, Claire."
I felt anger rising.
"Understand what?"
His expression changed.
"You think I built everything because I wanted your company?"
A pause.
"Because I wanted money?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel shook his head.
"I wanted something bigger."
Thomas frowned.
"What's bigger than money?"
Daniel looked at Emily.
And my entire body went cold.
"Legacy."
The word felt disgusting coming from him.
Emily stepped closer to me.
I immediately put my arm around her.
Daniel continued.
"Ethan had everything."
"Money."
"Family."
"Respect."
He looked at Ethan.
"And everyone believed he deserved it."
Ethan stared back.
"So you destroyed me."
Daniel smiled.
"I replaced you."
The room became silent.
Thomas's expression hardened.
"You didn't replace him."
"No?"
Daniel looked around.
"Look at what happened."
A pause.
"For eight years, everyone believed my story."
He pointed toward the documents.
"The world saw me as Emily's father."
Those words hurt.
Not because they were true.
Because Daniel believed they were enough.
Ethan stepped forward.
"You were never her father."
Daniel's face twisted.
"I raised her."
I interrupted.
"No."
My voice was calm.
"You controlled her."
The room went silent.
"You showed up when cameras were watching."
"You smiled when people were looking."
"But when she needed you..."
I looked at Emily.
"You weren't there."
Daniel looked away.
Because that was the truth he couldn't fight.
Then Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Daniel."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
Her expression was full of fear.
"You need to tell them."
Daniel frowned.
"Tell them what?"
Vanessa looked at Thomas.
"The Ghost wasn't the only person he hired."
The room froze.
Thomas immediately stepped forward.
"Who else?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Someone inside the legal system."
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa looked at the custody papers.
"The judge."
Silence.
The investigator immediately started writing.
"A corrupt judge?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Daniel paid people everywhere."
She looked around.
"Doctors."
"Lawyers."
"Officials."
Her voice shook.
"He didn't just create a false story."
A pause.
"He built a system where nobody could stop him."
Thomas looked furious.
"How many?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I don't know."
Then she opened them.
"But I know where the evidence is."
Everyone turned.
"Where?"
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
"Inside the Ghost's facility."
Thomas frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel trusted nobody."
She laughed sadly.
"He kept records of everyone he paid."
The room became silent.
"He kept those files as insurance."
Ethan understood immediately.
"So if anyone betrayed him..."
Vanessa nodded.
"He could destroy them."
Thomas grabbed his coat.
"Then we find the facility."
But before anyone could move...
Daniel spoke.
"You won't find anything."
Everyone stopped.
Thomas turned.
"Why?"
Daniel smiled.
"Because the Ghost already knows you're coming."
A cold feeling went through me.
"How?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Because he was never hiding from you."
A pause.
"He was watching you."
My blood froze.
Thomas immediately looked outside.
The parking area.
The road.
The darkness.
Then Emily whispered:
"Mom..."
I looked down.
She was staring at something outside.
A car.
Parked across the street.
Lights off.
Someone sitting inside.
Watching the house.
Thomas moved quickly toward the window.
But the car started.
And disappeared into the night.
The investigator checked his phone.
A message had arrived.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"You found the truth too late."
Everyone froze.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
But Daniel was no longer smiling.
Because for the first time...
he looked afraid of someone else.
Vanessa whispered:
"He knows."
"Who?"
She answered:
"The Ghost."
The message continued.
A second line appeared.
"The final move begins tomorrow."
The room went silent.
Because after eight years of lies...
Daniel's last secret was finally coming.
And this time...
the target wasn't Ethan.
May you like
It wasn't Claire.
It was Emily.
