CHAPTER 10 — The Child Daniel Tried to Erase

The ballroom had become completely silent.

Not the silence of confusion.

Not the silence of judgment.

The silence of people finally understanding that they had witnessed something unforgivable.

Dr. Wells stood in the center of the room.

A woman who had spent eighteen months carrying a secret.

A secret that had nearly destroyed my daughter's life.

Daniel stared at her.

"You don't know what you're doing."

Dr. Wells looked at him sadly.

"No, Daniel."

Her voice trembled.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

"I should have done this a long time ago."

Thomas stepped forward.

"What is that?"

Dr. Wells looked at me.

"It's the truth."

My hands tightened around Emily's.

The little girl beside me had already endured too much.

She had been accused.

Humiliated.

Used.

And now she was standing in the middle of a room full of adults who had failed to protect her.

I wanted to take her away.

I wanted to shield her from every cruel word.

But I knew something.

The truth had to come out.

Not for revenge.

For her.

Dr. Wells opened the envelope.

"After the divorce, Daniel came to me."

She looked at him.

"He wanted me to create a report suggesting Claire was mentally unstable."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"That's not true."

Dr. Wells didn't even look at him.

"He told me that if I refused, he would make sure my medical license was investigated."

A shocked whisper moved through the crowd.

"He knew I had once made a mistake in a patient's paperwork."

She swallowed.

"And he threatened to use it against me."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You signed it."

The words escaped his mouth before he could stop himself.

Everyone heard.

Everyone understood.

Dr. Wells nodded slowly.

"Yes."

A tear appeared in her eyes.

"And that is something I will regret forever."

Thomas took the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails.

Messages.

Documents.

Everything Daniel thought he had destroyed.

Thomas read the first page.

Then his expression changed.

"Claire..."

He looked at me.

"This isn't just about custody."

My stomach tightened.

"What is it?"

Thomas handed me the paper.

I read the first line.

And the world seemed to stop.

REQUEST FOR LEGAL NAME MODIFICATION.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

Then Dr. Wells spoke.

"Daniel wanted Emily's identity changed."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

She looked at Emily.

"He wanted to remove Carter from her records."

Emily looked confused.

"Why?"

No one answered.

Because the answer was cruel.

Daniel looked away.

I stared at him.

"You wanted to erase her?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"That's not what it was."

"Then explain."

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Thomas stepped in.

"The documents show that Daniel planned to claim Emily had been abandoned by her mother and create a new family identity with Vanessa."

The room gasped.

A new identity.

A new family.

A life where Emily would no longer be the daughter of Claire Carter.

A life where Daniel could rewrite the story.

Emily's voice was barely audible.

"Would I still be Emily?"

The question destroyed me.

I immediately hugged her.

"Of course you would."

But she looked at Daniel.

Not me.

"Would Daddy still call me his daughter?"

Daniel looked broken.

For a moment, he looked like the man she remembered.

But it was too late.

Too much had happened.

He took one step forward.

"Emily..."

She stepped back.

And that hurt him more than any accusation.

Because he finally understood.

He had spent months trying to take her away from her mother.

And in one night...

he had lost his daughter emotionally.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"You can't blame everything on Daniel."

Everyone turned.

Her face was pale.

"I was part of this."

Daniel looked at her.

"Vanessa."

She ignored him.

"I helped plan the wedding."

A pause.

"I helped create the story."

The room became still.

"But there is something Daniel doesn't know."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Vanessa looked terrified.

"The reason he wanted Emily gone..."

She looked at me.

"...wasn't because of custody."

My heart stopped.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"Daniel found out something before the divorce."

The room went silent.

Something?

What could be worse than this?

She whispered:

"He found out Emily was connected to someone else."

I felt confused.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel's face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

Vanessa continued.

"He knew the truth about Emily's birth."

Emily looked up at me.

"Mom?"

My entire body went cold.

Because there was only one secret from Emily's birth that I had never told anyone.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not anyone.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"What did you discover?"

Daniel said nothing.

But his silence was enough.

Because he wasn't shocked by the accusation.

He was terrified that the secret would finally come out.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Carrying a worn leather briefcase.

He looked directly at Emily.

And tears filled his eyes.

"I've been searching for you for eight years."

Nobody moved.

The man whispered:

"My daughter."

Emily froze.

And I realized...

the greatest secret Daniel had tried to erase...

May you like

was never the custody case.

It was Emily's true identity.
