CHAPTER 16 â The Sister Who Sold Her Own Family

The screen remained frozen.
A single image.
A single face.
A face I knew better than anyone.
My sister.
Rachel.
The person who had held Emily the day she was born.
The person who cried with me after Ethan disappeared.
The person who promised me:
"I will help you get through this."
My knees almost gave out.
"No."
The word escaped my mouth.
"No, that can't be her."
Margaret looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I wish it wasn't."
Ethan stared at the screen.
His face had become completely still.
The kind of stillness that comes before someone breaks.
"Rachel was there?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
Thomas paused the video again.
"We need to be certain before making accusations."
He looked at the investigator.
"Enhance the image."
The investigator worked quickly.
The screen became clearer.
The person standing beside Daniel eight years ago...
was unmistakably Rachel.
My sister.
My family.
The person I trusted when everyone else left.
Emily's voice suddenly came from behind me.
"Mom?"
I turned.
She was standing at the doorway.
I froze.
She wasn't supposed to see this.
She wasn't supposed to carry another piece of this nightmare.
I rushed toward her.
"Sweetheart, why are you awake?"
Her eyes moved to the screen.
Then back to me.
"Is that Aunt Rachel?"
I couldn't answer.
Because sometimes silence is the only honest answer.
Emily lowered her eyes.
"Did she hurt us too?"
That question broke my heart.
Because an eight-year-old child should never have to wonder how many adults wanted to hurt her.
I knelt down.
"I don't know yet."
Emily looked at me.
"But we'll find out."
Thomas turned off the screen.
"Claire, before we continue, there is something you need to understand."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"People like Daniel rarely work alone."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Every lie had needed help.
Every secret had needed someone to protect it.
The investigator placed another file on the table.
"This was recovered from Daniel's office."
Thomas opened it.
Inside was a payment record.
The name:
RACHEL CARTER
My breathing stopped.
"No..."
The investigator continued.
"Monthly payments beginning eight years ago."
Thomas looked at the dates.
"Continuing until last month."
The room went silent.
Ethan spoke quietly.
"She was paid to keep quiet."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Margaret.
"You knew about this too?"
She looked ashamed.
"I suspected."
"Suspected?"
My voice rose.
"You suspected my sister was taking money from Daniel while I was struggling to raise Emily alone?"
Margaret looked down.
"I was afraid."
I shook my head.
"Everyone was afraid."
A tear fell.
"But somehow I was the only one who had to survive."
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas found another document.
"Wait."
Everyone looked.
"This isn't just a payment record."
He turned the paper around.
"This is an agreement."
The title read:
CONFIDENTIALITY AND COOPERATION AGREEMENT
Thomas continued.
"Rachel wasn't just paid to stay silent."
A pause.
"She was hired."
My heart sank.
"For what?"
Thomas looked at me.
"To monitor you."
The room became cold.
"Monitor me?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your finances."
"Your relationship with Emily."
"Your emotional state."
Everything suddenly made sense.
The strange questions.
The constant messages.
The way Rachel always asked:
"Are you still struggling?"
"Are you sure you can handle Emily alone?"
"Maybe Daniel has a point."
She wasn't checking on me.
She was collecting information.
Ethan clenched his fists.
"She was spying on Claire."
Thomas nodded.
"For years."
Then the investigator spoke.
"There is more."
Everyone turned.
"We found recordings."
My stomach tightened.
"Recordings?"
He nodded.
"Rachel recorded private conversations inside the house."
A wave of disgust moved through me.
My own sister.
Inside my home.
Listening.
Watching.
Reporting.
Thomas connected another file.
The audio played.
Static.
Then Rachel's voice.
"Daniel, Claire still believes Ethan abandoned her."
My entire body froze.
Because hearing her say it...
made the betrayal real.
Daniel's voice answered.
"Good. Keep it that way."
Rachel asked:
"What about Emily?"
A pause.
Then Daniel replied:
"Once the custody transfer is complete, everything becomes easier."
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then another recording began.
Rachel's voice again.
But this time...
she sounded afraid.
"Daniel, this has gone too far."
Daniel replied:
"You knew what you agreed to."
Rachel whispered:
"I didn't know you would destroy them."
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Nobody destroys anyone. People just get removed when they become inconvenient."
The audio ended.
Thomas looked at me.
"Rachel eventually tried to back out."
I looked confused.
"Then why didn't she tell me?"
Nobody answered.
Margaret whispered:
"Because Daniel threatened her."
I closed my eyes.
A part of me wanted to understand.
Wanted to believe Rachel had been trapped.
But another part of me remembered something important.
She had watched me suffer.
For eight years.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Crying.
Broken.
Rachel.
Emily immediately stepped closer to me.
My protective instincts took over.
Rachel looked at me.
"Claire..."
I stepped back.
"Don't."
The word hurt her.
But I couldn't stop.
"I know what you saw."
Her voice trembled.
"I know what you think."
I stared at her.
"What should I think?"
Rachel cried.
"I was scared."
I shook my head.
"You weren't scared when you took his money."
Silence.
She looked at Emily.
And the guilt on her face was obvious.
"I never wanted her hurt."
Emily looked at her.
"Then why did you help them?"
Rachel broke.
Because that question came from the one person she had failed most.
"I thought I was protecting you."
I laughed bitterly.
"By helping them erase her father?"
Rachel covered her face.
"No."
A pause.
"I found out too late what Daniel really planned."
Thomas stepped forward.
"Then tell us everything."
Rachel looked at the room.
At the evidence.
At Daniel's collapsing empire.
Then she whispered:
"There is something Daniel never told any of you."
Everyone became silent.
Rachel looked at Ethan.
"That night you disappeared..."
A pause.
"Daniel wasn't trying to scare you away."
Ethan's expression changed.
"What are you saying?"
Rachel looked terrified.
"He planned to make sure you could never return."
My blood ran cold.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Explain."
Rachel whispered:
"Daniel hired someone that night."
A silence.
"Someone to make Ethan disappear forever."
Nobody breathed.
Because after eight years...
we finally discovered the truth.
Ethan didn't disappear.
He survived.
May you like
And the person Daniel hired...
was still out there.
