CHAPTER 15 â The File That Was Never Supposed to Exist

The words stayed in my mind.
"Emily Carter â Final Removal Strategy."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because there were only a few things in this world that could make a mother feel completely powerless.
One of them was seeing her child's name written inside a plan created by people who wanted to destroy her.
Thomas noticed my expression.
"Claire..."
I looked at him.
"What does 'final removal' mean?"
Nobody answered immediately.
And that silence terrified me.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Open the file."
His voice was different.
Not the grieving father from earlier.
Not the man searching for his lost daughter.
He was someone who had finally reached the point where protecting Emily mattered more than anything else.
The investigator placed the sealed folder on the table.
"We found this hidden inside Daniel's private office."
Thomas examined the seal.
"Why wasn't this discovered earlier?"
The investigator shook his head.
"Because it wasn't stored with normal business records."
He looked at me.
"It was hidden behind a false wall."
Another secret room.
Another hidden place.
Another piece of Daniel's life built around deception.
Thomas opened the folder carefully.
Inside were pages.
Photographs.
Legal documents.
A timeline.
And one title page.
PROJECT: NEW BEGINNING
SUBJECT: EMILY CARTER
My stomach turned.
"Project?"
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"Yes."
Ethan grabbed the edge of the table.
"He treated his own daughter like a business operation."
Nobody responded.
Because that was exactly what it looked like.
Thomas began reading.
"Objective..."
He stopped.
His expression changed.
"What?"
I stepped closer.
"Thomas."
He looked at me.
"The objective was not only custody transfer."
A pause.
"It was identity replacement."
The room went cold.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas looked down at the papers.
"It means Daniel planned to remove every legal connection between Emily and Claire."
My breathing stopped.
"He wanted to erase me?"
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
The investigator pointed to another page.
"After obtaining custody, Daniel planned to relocate Emily."
"Where?"
The investigator hesitated.
"Another state."
Ethan's face hardened.
"Without telling Claire?"
Thomas looked at the documents.
"Correct."
I felt sick.
Eight years of raising my daughter.
Eight years of protecting her.
And Daniel had planned a future where I would wake up one morning...
and my child would simply be gone.
Emily was sitting in the car outside.
Safe.
Away from this.
And I was grateful.
Because she should never have to hear these words.
Then Thomas found something else.
A handwritten note.
Unlike the other documents.
This one was written by Daniel himself.
He read quietly.
Then his expression became serious.
"Everyone needs to hear this."
He unfolded the paper.
And began reading.
"Claire will fight at first."
"She is emotional and attached."
"But once the public believes she is unstable, she will lose support."
My hands clenched.
"Emily is young. She will adapt."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Pain crossed his face.
Because those words weren't about a daughter.
They were about property.
Thomas continued.
"The most important thing is removing Ethan's influence permanently."
The room became silent.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Permanent..."
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
Thomas turned toward her.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Vanessa."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I thought he meant legally."
A pause.
"But after everything I discovered..."
She shook her head.
"I don't know anymore."
Daniel's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"You people are making assumptions."
Everyone turned.
He was standing there.
The investigators had allowed him inside.
But something was different.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect businessman was gone.
Only fear remained.
I looked at him.
"How long?"
He stared at me.
"What?"
"How long did you plan to take my daughter?"
Daniel looked at Emily's empty chair.
Then looked away.
That was the answer.
"You weren't trying to be her father."
My voice cracked.
"You were trying to own her."
Daniel became angry.
"I loved her."
Ethan stepped forward.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"You loved having control over her."
Daniel looked at him.
"You don't know anything about raising a child."
Ethan smiled sadly.
"You're right."
A pause.
"I don't know what it's like to raise Emily."
He looked toward the door.
"But I know what it's like to lose her."
That sentence destroyed Daniel.
Because it was true.
Then the investigator placed another piece of evidence on the table.
"We found one more thing."
Everyone looked.
A small USB drive.
"What is it?"
The investigator answered:
"Video files."
Thomas frowned.
"From where?"
The investigator looked at Daniel.
"From the house."
My heart stopped.
"The house cameras?"
The investigator nodded.
"Daniel installed hidden cameras throughout the property."
A wave of horror moved through the room.
"He was watching us?"
Thomas nodded.
"Not just watching."
He connected the drive.
"He was recording."
The screen turned on.
Static.
Then an image appeared.
My old living room.
Eight years earlier.
I saw myself.
Younger.
Holding baby Emily.
Smiling.
Happy.
Then Daniel appeared.
Watching from the doorway.
Not smiling.
Not happy.
Calculating.
The video continued.
Daniel's younger voice filled the room.
"One day she'll understand."
My blood ran cold.
Another voice answered.
Vanessa.
"And Claire?"
Daniel replied:
"Claire won't matter anymore."
Nobody spoke.
Then the final video appeared.
The date.
The night Ethan disappeared.
Ethan moved closer.
"That's impossible."
The footage showed Daniel leaving the house.
Following him...
was Vanessa.
But there was one more person.
Someone nobody expected.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Because she recognized the person on screen.
Thomas paused the video.
"Who is that?"
Margaret whispered:
"No..."
The person turned toward the camera.
The face became clear.
It was not a stranger.
It was someone from my past.
Someone I trusted.
Margaret looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Claire..."
My heart stopped.
"Who is that?"
She answered:
"Your sister."
The room went silent.
May you like
Because the final person involved in Daniel's plan...
was someone who shared my blood.
