CHAPTER 9 â The Letter From The Father I Never Knew

The envelope trembled in my hands.
Not because it was old.
Not because the paper had yellowed with time.
But because it carried the handwriting of a man I had never met.
A man whose blood ran through my veins.
A man who had apparently spent his final moments trying to protect me.
My biological father.
Alexander Vale.
The ballroom remained frozen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Every person in that room was waiting for me to open the letter.
Waiting to discover what secrets had been hidden for thirty years.
I looked at Daniel and Sarah.
The parents who raised me.
The two people who had sacrificed everything for me.
My heart hurt because suddenly I felt like I was losing themâŠ
even though they were still standing right in front of me.
My mother noticed.
She squeezed my hand.
"Emma..."
Her voice was gentle.
"Whatever is inside that letter..."
She looked into my eyes.
"You are still our daughter."
Those words gave me the strength to continue.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper folded carefully.
The ink was faded.
But the handwriting was steady.
The first line immediately brought tears to my eyes.
"My dearest Amelia,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally found you.
I pray that I am wrong.
I pray that somehow, you grew up far away from the darkness that surrounded our family.
But if this letter has reached you, then you are old enough to know the truth."
My breathing became uneven.
I continued reading.
"You were born into the Vale family, but you were never meant to inherit its cruelty.
Your grandfather built an empire.
But somewhere along the way, the people around him forgot that an empire without honor is worthless."
"I discovered that someone inside our family was stealing from the company.
"At first, I believed it was only greed.
"I was wrong."
I looked up.
Everyone was listening.
Even Victor.
But his expression had changed.
For the first timeâŠ
he looked uncertain.
I continued.
"The person who betrayed us did not want money.
Money can be earned again.
They wanted control.
They wanted every person connected to the Vale name to become powerless."
My eyes moved toward Victor.
He remained still.
But his jaw tightened.
The letter continued.
"Amelia, if you ever discover this truth, remember one thing.
Do not seek revenge.
Seek justice.
Because revenge destroys the person who carries it.
Justice destroys the person who deserves it."
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Those words sounded like something my father would say.
Not the father who gave me life.
The father who raised me.
Daniel.
The same values.
The same belief.
Then I reached the next paragraph.
And my entire body froze.
"There is something else you must know.
"The person who helped save you was not a stranger."
"He was someone who once betrayed us."
I stopped.
Everyone looked at me.
I kept reading.
"Richard Vale knew what was happening."
The room went silent.
Richard closed his eyes.
My heart dropped.
Richard.
The man who had apologized.
The man who claimed he regretted everything.
The man who acted like he was on our side.
My hands shook.
I looked at him.
"Why?"
My voice broke.
"Why does my father say you knew?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
And that silence hurt.
Because silence was becoming the language of betrayal.
Finally, Richard spoke.
"Because it's true."
A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.
Preston looked at him.
"Grandfather..."
Richard looked older than before.
"I knew my father was doing something wrong."
He swallowed.
"But I didn't understand the full extent."
My eyes narrowed.
"You knew enough."
Richard looked at me.
"Yes."
A painful pause.
"I knew enough to stop it."
My chest tightened.
"But you didn't."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I was a coward."
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn't erase the damage.
My biological father had trusted him.
My parents had suffered because of him.
And I had almost married into the same family.
I looked back at the letter.
There was more.
"However, Richard was not the only person who knew."
"Someone else helped create the betrayal."
My eyes moved across the room.
Who else?
The letter continued.
"The person who helped Victor Blackwell gain access to Vale Enterprises was someone I loved like family."
Everyone became tense.
The next sentence was written darker.
As if Alexander had pressed harder when writing it.
"It was my own brother."
A gasp escaped from someone in the audience.
My mind went blank.
My father's brother.
My biological uncle.
Someone in the Vale family.
Richard looked shocked.
"What?"
Victor suddenly laughed.
A quiet laugh.
Almost amused.
"You really are learning everything today."
I turned toward him.
"What do you know?"
Victor smiled.
"I know your father discovered the truth too late."
He stepped closer.
"Alexander believed family loyalty would save him."
Victor shook his head.
"That was his weakness."
My father stepped forward.
"Stop."
Victor ignored him.
"He trusted his brother."
The room became colder.
"His brother betrayed him."
I looked at Richard.
Because there was only one person that could mean.
Richard had a brother.
William Vale Sr.
The founder.
The man who was supposedly responsible.
But William was dead.
So who was the real traitor?
Then Richard suddenly whispered:
"No..."
Everyone looked at him.
His face had turned pale.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
Richard looked at the letter.
Then at Victor.
Then at Preston.
"My father had another child."
Silence.
The words felt unreal.
Another child.
Another Vale.
Another person hidden from history.
Richard continued:
"A son nobody knew about."
Victor smiled.
"Not nobody."
He looked around.
"I knew."
My heart raced.
"Where is he?"
Victor's smile widened.
"Closer than you think."
Everyone looked around.
The guests.
The family.
The employees.
Until Victor's eyes slowly moved.
Toward the front row.
Toward someone who had been standing there quietly the entire time.
Someone who had not spoken once.
Someone who had watched every secret unfold.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized him.
He was the man who had signed the marriage documents.
The man who handled all of Preston's family's legal affairs.
The man who had been introduced to me as a trusted family attorney.
Jonathan Vale.
Preston's uncle.
The man everyone believed was only a lawyer.
He slowly removed his glasses.
And for the first time...
he smiled.
"I suppose the family reunion is finally complete."
The ballroom erupted.
Richard stepped back.
"No..."
Jonathan looked at him.
"Hello, brother."
The entire Vale family froze.
Jonathan turned toward me.
"Emma Carter."
A pause.
"Or should I say..."
He smiled.
"Amelia Vale."
My heart stopped.
"Why are you here?"
Jonathan looked at the letter in my hand.
"Because your father left you something."
He stepped closer.
"Something that belongs to me."
I stared at him.
"What?"
His smile disappeared.
"The truth."
He looked around the ballroom.
"Because your father didn't just leave you an inheritance."
A pause.
"He left you evidence."
My fingers tightened around the letter.
"Evidence of what?"
Jonathan's eyes darkened.
"Of who really killed Alexander Vale."
The ballroom went silent.
Then he said the words that changed everything:
"The person who murdered your father..."
He looked directly at Richard.
"...is not Victor Blackwell."
Everyone turned.
Richard's face went pale.
May you like
Jonathan finished:
"It was someone sitting beside him the entire time."
