CHAPTER 12 â The Mother Who Hid The Truth

The video continued playing.
But nobody was watching the screen anymore.
Everyone was watching my mother.
Sarah Carter.
The woman who had held my hand when I was sick.
The woman who stayed awake beside my bed during thunderstorms because I was afraid of the dark.
The woman who taught me that honesty was the foundation of every relationship.
The woman who had just been exposed standing in a room full of strangersâŠ
as someone who had hidden the truth from me.
My mother looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of embarrassment.
Fear of losing me.
"Emma..."
Her voice cracked.
But I stepped back.
The movement hurt both of us.
Because she understood what it meant.
For the first time in my lifeâŠ
I was afraid of my own mother.
The ballroom remained silent.
Even Victor Blackwell was watching carefully.
Because this was the one thing nobody expected.
Not Preston.
Not the Vale family.
Not me.
Sarah Carter had known.
Richard looked toward the screen.
Then at my mother.
"What did you know?"
My mother closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I knew the truth about Emma's identity."
The confession hit harder than any accusation before.
My father immediately stepped forward.
"Sarah..."
She looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
My father looked devastated.
Not angry.
Heartbroken.
Because he had spent his life protecting this secret with her.
And now the secret had destroyed the person they loved most.
Me.
I looked at my mother.
"How long?"
She wiped her tears.
"Since the day we found you."
My chest tightened.
"Since I was three?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
I shook my head slowly.
"So all these years..."
My voice trembled.
"You knew I was Amelia Vale."
She looked down.
"Yes."
"And you let me believe I was only Emma Carter."
Another tear fell.
"Because you were."
I frowned.
"What?"
She stepped closer.
"You were Emma Carter because we raised you."
She touched her chest.
"That was the truth we chose."
I wanted to believe her.
I wanted to run into her arms.
But too many secrets had been uncovered today.
Too many people had said:
"We hid it because we loved you."
And every secret had still hurt me.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
She looked at the floor.
"Because every time I tried..."
She stopped.
"Someone threatened us."
The room became quiet.
My father looked at her.
"Sarah..."
She nodded.
"It's time."
I looked between them.
"What happened?"
My mother took a deep breath.
"After Alexander died, we thought the danger was over."
She looked at Victor.
"We were wrong."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Fear is useful."
My mother ignored him.
"Someone began watching us."
"Following us."
"Sending messages."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
She looked toward the Vale family.
"At first, we thought it was Victor."
Victor raised an eyebrow.
"But then we discovered something worse."
A pause.
"It was someone inside the Vale family."
Everyone looked around.
My mother continued:
"Someone knew we had you."
My father's expression became dark.
"They came to our house."
I froze.
"What?"
He nodded.
"Years ago."
My mother grabbed his hand.
"They told us to disappear."
My voice became quiet.
"Or what?"
My father looked at me.
"They said they would take you away."
The room went cold.
My entire life flashed before my eyes.
The small house.
The family dinners.
The birthdays.
The ordinary moments I thought were simple.
Suddenly they looked like miracles.
Because someone had been trying to steal them from me.
My mother continued.
"We changed our names."
"We moved."
"We cut every connection to the Vale family."
She looked at me.
"Because we wanted you to grow up without fear."
I swallowed.
"But you still kept the documents."
My mother nodded.
"Your grandfather's trust papers."
"The letters."
"The evidence."
"Everything."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because one day you would need them."
I stared at her.
"Then why let me marry Preston?"
That question changed everything.
My mother looked at Preston.
Then back at me.
"Because I thought he was different."
Preston looked away.
My mother continued.
"Your father disagreed."
I looked at Daniel.
"You didn't trust him?"
My father shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
His answer came immediately.
"Because I saw his last name before I saw his heart."
A painful silence.
"But I was wrong about one thing."
He looked at Preston.
"He wasn't the person I feared most."
Everyone turned.
My father pointed toward the screen.
"Whoever recorded that video..."
"Whoever leaked it today..."
"Is trying to make us destroy each other."
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
My father walked toward the screen.
"Look at the timestamp."
Everyone looked.
The video was recorded three days before the wedding.
But the file creation date was today.
Thomas stepped closer.
His eyes narrowed.
"Someone edited the footage."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Thomas nodded.
"The conversation happened."
"But someone released it at this exact moment."
Richard looked around.
"Why?"
I answered quietly.
"To make me distrust everyone."
Silence.
Because that was exactly what was happening.
Someone wanted me isolated.
Everyone I loved was now a suspect.
My parents.
Preston.
The Vale family.
Everyone.
Then the screen changed.
Another video appeared.
Everyone turned.
This one was different.
No timestamp.
No editing.
Just a hidden camera.
A private meeting.
And the person speaking was someone nobody expected.
My father.
Daniel Carter.
My heart stopped.
"No..."
The video showed my father sitting across from someone.
The hidden person's face wasn't visible.
But the voice was clear.
A man's voice.
And then he said:
"Daniel, if Emma discovers the truth, she will never forgive you."
My father in the video replied:
"I know."
The ballroom went silent.
Then the hidden man asked:
"Are you willing to lose your daughter to protect the secret?"
My father's answer came immediately.
"Yes."
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
My father.
The man who had protected me my entire life.
Had admitted he was willing to lose me.
The video continued.
The hidden man leaned forward.
"And what about the real reason you adopted Amelia?"
My breath stopped.
My father's face in the video changed.
Fear.
The same fear I saw earlier.
Then he whispered:
"Because Alexander asked me to."
The room froze.
I looked at my father.
"What?"
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
My father stood there.
Completely silent.
I felt tears forming.
"Who was he talking to?"
No answer.
"Why did Alexander ask you to adopt me?"
Still nothing.
Then Victor smiled.
Because he knew something.
He stepped forward.
"Now you finally understand."
I looked at him.
"Understand what?"
Victor's smile widened.
"That the Carter family has been hiding something too."
My father's face turned pale.
Victor continued:
"The truth about why Alexander Vale gave you away."
My heart raced.
"What are you saying?"
Victor looked directly at me.
"Emma..."
A pause.
"Your father didn't save you from the Vale family."
Everyone froze.
"He saved you from your own bloodline."
The ballroom went silent.
Then Victor delivered the sentence that changed everything:
"Because Alexander Vale knew his daughter was not safe..."
"even from her own mother."
I looked at Sarah.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
And for the first time...
I wondered if the biggest secret of my lifeâŠ
May you like
was not who I was.
But why I was abandoned.
