CHAPTER 14 â The Mother Who Chose To Disappear

For thirty yearsâŠ
everyone believed Isabella Vale was dead.
A tragedy.
A forgotten chapter of a powerful family.
A woman whose name had slowly disappeared from every conversation.
But now she stood in the middle of the Grand Ellison Ballroom.
Alive.
Breathing.
Looking directly at me.
And the strangest part wasn't that she had returned.
The strangest part was that when I looked into her eyesâŠ
I recognized something.
Not her face.
Not her voice.
Something deeper.
A feeling I couldn't explain.
Like a missing piece of myself had finally been placed back where it belonged.
But my heart refused to accept it.
Because this woman was my biological mother.
And she was also the woman who had allowed me to grow up believing I had no connection to her.
I stared at her.
"You were alive."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard.
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
A single word.
A lifetime of pain behind it.
I shook my head.
"No."
I stepped back.
"You don't get to just walk in here and say yes."
Her expression broke.
"I know."
"You let me grow up without you."
"I know."
"You let me believe you abandoned me."
"I know."
Each answer hurt more.
Because she wasn't defending herself.
She wasn't making excuses.
She was accepting the pain.
And somehow that made it harder.
I looked toward Daniel and Sarah.
My parents.
The people who raised me.
Then back at Isabella.
The woman who gave me life.
Three mothers.
Three different truths.
And I was standing in the middle of all of them.
"Why?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
"Why did you leave me?"
The entire ballroom went silent.
Isabella took a slow breath.
Then she answered.
"Because if I stayed..."
She looked at Victor.
"...you would have died."
The words shocked everyone.
Victor laughed.
"Still telling stories, Isabella?"
She ignored him.
"When Alexander discovered what Victor and Edward were planning, he tried to protect Amelia."
She looked at me.
"You."
A tear fell.
"But we underestimated how far they would go."
My father nodded.
"Victor had people everywhere."
Isabella continued.
"He controlled the company."
"He controlled the police."
"He controlled the media."
A pause.
"And he controlled people inside my own family."
Richard lowered his head.
Everyone knew who she meant.
Edward.
Isabella looked at me.
"The night Alexander died..."
Her voice shook.
"I was there."
My chest tightened.
"What?"
She closed her eyes.
"I saw everything."
The ballroom froze.
"You saw my father die?"
She nodded.
"And I couldn't save him."
Her voice broke.
"I tried."
A painful silence.
"Alexander knew we were in danger."
"He had prepared an escape plan."
She looked at Daniel.
"Daniel and Sarah were supposed to take you away."
My father nodded.
"He trusted us."
I looked at them.
"So you knew?"
My father looked down.
"Yes."
"All of you knew."
Nobody answered.
Again.
The same silence.
Isabella continued.
"Alexander gave me one final instruction."
"What?"
She looked directly at me.
"Never let Amelia know who she was."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
"Because your identity was the only thing keeping you alive."
I frowned.
"But if they didn't know I was Amelia..."
She nodded.
"Exactly."
A cold realization entered my mind.
"The entire world thought I was dead."
"Yes."
"But I was alive as Emma Carter."
"Yes."
"And that protected me."
Isabella nodded.
"Until Victor discovered the truth."
Everyone looked at Victor.
He smiled.
"Eventually, every secret comes out."
I ignored him.
I looked at Isabella.
"Then why come back now?"
Her expression changed.
Because that question mattered.
"Because I failed."
The answer surprised me.
"I spent thirty years hiding."
She looked ashamed.
"I told myself I was protecting you."
A pause.
"But I was also afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
She looked at Victor.
"Of losing."
The word hung in the air.
"I lost Alexander."
"I lost my daughter."
"I lost my family."
Her voice broke.
"And I convinced myself that disappearing was the only way to keep you alive."
I looked at her.
"But you weren't there."
The pain on her face was immediate.
"I know."
"I had nightmares."
"I cried for a mother I thought didn't want me."
"I wondered what I did wrong."
Isabella covered her mouth.
"I'm sorry."
The apology was simple.
But it carried thirty years.
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to blame her.
But seeing her pain...
I couldn't.
Not completely.
Then Victor interrupted.
"How touching."
Everyone looked at him.
"But we're forgetting something."
He walked closer.
"Isabella wasn't only hiding."
He smiled.
"She was negotiating."
My eyes moved toward him.
"What?"
Victor looked at Isabella.
"Tell her."
Isabella's face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"What is he talking about?"
Victor smiled.
"Tell Amelia what you promised me."
The room became tense.
My father stepped forward.
"Victor, enough."
"No."
Victor's voice became cold.
"She deserves the truth."
He looked at me.
"Your mother didn't just disappear."
A pause.
"She made a deal with me."
My heart sank.
I looked at Isabella.
"Is that true?"
She didn't answer.
And once again...
silence.
My stomach tightened.
"What deal?"
Victor smiled.
"The deal that saved your life."
"And what did she give you?"
Victor's eyes moved toward me.
"Something far more valuable than money."
A chill went through me.
"What?"
He smiled.
"Your inheritance."
The ballroom exploded.
My father shouted:
"That's impossible!"
Victor laughed.
"Is it?"
He looked at Isabella.
"She signed the agreement."
Isabella's face went pale.
"I never intended to honor it."
Victor smiled.
"But you signed."
I looked at Isabella.
"Did you?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes."
The truth landed like a knife.
"You gave him my inheritance?"
She nodded.
"But not because I wanted money."
"Then why?"
She looked at me.
"Because the agreement said something else."
"What?"
Her voice became barely audible.
"It said if I refused..."
A pause.
"He would reveal your identity."
The room went silent.
"And then?"
Isabella looked at Victor.
"He would kill you."
Everyone froze.
My father grabbed my hand.
Sarah started crying.
Preston stepped forward.
But Victor only smiled.
"Your mother made the right choice."
I looked at him.
"You threatened a child."
Victor didn't deny it.
"I protected my interests."
The disgust I felt was overwhelming.
Then Thomas suddenly interrupted.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
He looked at the agreement Victor had mentioned.
"That contract."
Victor frowned.
"What about it?"
Thomas walked toward him.
"You made one mistake."
Victor's smile faded.
"What mistake?"
Thomas pointed at the document.
"You assumed Isabella was the only person who signed it."
A silence.
Then he looked at me.
"She wasn't."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas pulled another file from his briefcase.
"The original agreement had a second signature."
My heart raced.
"Whose?"
Thomas looked at the document.
Then said:
"The person who created the entire trap."
Everyone waited.
Thomas turned the page.
And the name appeared.
A name that made Richard collapse into a chair.
A name that made Victor's expression finally change.
A name nobody expected.
Alexander Vale.
My biological father.
The man everyone believed was a victim.
Thomas whispered:
"Your father wasn't only trying to escape them."
"He was making a deal with them."
The ballroom went silent.
Because the truth had just changed again.
Alexander ValeâŠ
May you like
the man I had spent my entire life believing was a heroâŠ
might have been hiding the darkest secret of all.
