CHAPTER 13 â The Secret Behind My Birth

The words stayed in the air.
Like a weapon nobody wanted to touch.
"Your father didn't save you from the Vale family."
Victor looked directly at me.
"He saved you from your own bloodline."
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to tell him he was lying like he had lied about everything else.
But then I looked at my father.
Daniel Carter.
The man who had always been my hero.
The man who taught me kindness.
The man who worked until his hands cracked so I could have a better life.
And I saw it.
The hesitation.
The pain.
The silence.
The same silence everyone had given me all day.
A silence that meant there was another truth waiting.
I slowly turned toward him.
"Dad."
My voice trembled.
"Is he lying?"
My father looked at me.
And for several seconds...
he said nothing.
That was enough.
My heart broke.
"You're not answering."
My mother stepped forward.
"Emma..."
I looked at her.
"Please."
A single word.
But it carried everything.
Please don't lie again.
Please don't protect me with another secret.
Please let me know my own life.
My mother looked at Daniel.
And finally...
my father nodded.
"It's true."
The ballroom erupted.
But I heard nothing.
Because the only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat.
"You knew?"
I whispered.
"You knew something was wrong with my birth?"
My father closed his eyes.
"Yes."
I took a step back.
"How much?"
He looked destroyed.
"Everything."
That word hurt more than any lie.
Everything.
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"Everyone keeps saying they protected me."
I looked around the ballroom.
"But nobody protected me from the truth."
My father stepped closer.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
He stopped.
I nodded.
"Exactly."
I looked at my wedding dress.
At the flowers.
At the guests.
The day that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life had become the day I discovered I didn't even know my own name.
My father took a deep breath.
"When Alexander found out someone inside the family was trying to kill him..."
The room became quiet.
"He knew he couldn't protect you by keeping you close."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the danger wasn't only outside the family."
He looked at me.
"It was inside your home."
My blood ran cold.
"Who?"
He looked toward the old documents.
"Your mother."
The entire ballroom froze.
I turned to Sarah.
My mother.
The woman who had cried for me.
The woman who had held me.
The woman who had protected me.
"No."
My voice was barely audible.
"My mother?"
My father immediately shook his head.
"Not the way you think."
"Then explain."
He looked at Sarah.
And she began crying.
"Emma..."
She took a shaky breath.
"I need you to hear everything."
I nodded.
Because I had nothing left to lose.
She looked down.
"Your biological mother was Isabella Vale."
The name was unfamiliar.
But the pain on Richard's face told me it mattered.
Richard whispered:
"Isabella..."
My mother continued.
"She was Alexander's wife."
I felt my chest tighten.
"My real mother."
Sarah nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did you say I wasn't safe from her?"
My mother looked devastated.
"Because Isabella was not the person everyone believed she was."
The ballroom became silent.
Sarah continued.
"When Alexander discovered the betrayal inside the family, he tried to leave with you."
I frowned.
"Leave?"
"Yes."
"He wanted to take you away from the Vale name forever."
My father nodded.
"That was the night everything changed."
I looked at him.
"What happened?"
His expression became painful.
"Isabella found out."
"And?"
He hesitated.
"She tried to stop him."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
"Because Isabella had already made a deal."
Everyone turned.
My father looked at Thomas.
"You shouldn't be the one telling this."
Thomas nodded.
"But someone has to."
He looked at me.
"Isabella Vale made an agreement with Victor Blackwell."
The room exploded.
"No."
Richard looked shocked.
"That's impossible."
Thomas shook his head.
"It happened."
Victor smiled.
"Finally, someone remembers."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
Victor looked at me.
"Because Isabella understood something Alexander didn't."
"What?"
"Power."
His answer was cold.
"Your father wanted morality."
"Your mother wanted survival."
I shook my head.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"You don't want to believe it."
"Because you remember the woman who raised you."
He looked at Sarah.
"But you never knew the woman who gave birth to you."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I never knew Isabella.
I only knew Sarah.
The woman standing beside me.
Sarah stepped forward.
"Emma, listen to me."
I looked at her.
"Did my biological mother try to hurt me?"
Her silence answered before her words did.
"She was confused."
I frowned.
"That's not an answer."
Sarah cried.
"She loved you."
"Then why?"
Sarah looked at Daniel.
And he answered.
"Because Isabella believed the only way to protect you was to make you disappear."
I stared at him.
"Disappear?"
My father nodded.
"She created a plan."
"What plan?"
"She wanted everyone to believe you died."
My breath stopped.
"She wanted me dead?"
"No."
My father stepped closer.
"She wanted the world to stop searching for you."
A pause.
"Because if nobody knew you existed..."
"You couldn't be used against her."
The explanation should have comforted me.
But it didn't.
Because my entire life was built on a lie.
Then Richard suddenly spoke.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
His face had gone pale.
"If Isabella made that deal..."
He looked at Victor.
"Then why did Alexander die?"
Silence.
Victor smiled.
"Because Isabella changed her mind."
Richard froze.
"What?"
Victor looked at me.
"Your mother was supposed to hand you over."
My heart stopped.
"But she didn't."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"She betrayed me."
A chill went through the room.
My mother whispered:
"Because she realized what you really wanted."
Victor looked at Sarah.
"Yes."
His voice became darker.
"She discovered I never wanted the company."
A pause.
"I wanted Amelia."
The room froze.
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Me?"
Victor nodded.
"Your grandfather created a trust that could only be unlocked by you."
He stepped closer.
"You were not just an heir."
"You were the key."
I stepped back.
"So all of this..."
"The wedding."
"The lies."
"The inheritance."
"Everything was about me?"
Victor smiled.
"Exactly."
Then suddenly...
the ballroom doors opened.
A woman appeared.
Everyone turned.
She looked older.
Tired.
But her face was unmistakable.
Richard dropped his glass.
My father stopped breathing.
Sarah whispered:
"No..."
The woman looked directly at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
And then she said:
"Amelia."
My heart stopped.
Because somehow...
I knew.
Before anyone spoke.
Before anyone explained.
I knew who she was.
My biological mother.
Isabella Vale.
She stepped into the ballroom.
Alive.
After thirty years of being believed dead.
And the first thing she said was:
"I know who tried to kill your father."
She looked at Victor.
Then at me.
"But before I tell you..."
Her voice broke.
"You need to know the truth about why I abandoned you."
The ballroom went silent.
Because the woman who gave me life...
May you like
was finally here.
And she was about to explain why she let me believe she was gone forever.
