CHAPTER 17 — The Woman Who Claimed My Life

The ballroom fell into chaos.

Not the chaos of a celebration.

Not the chaos of a disagreement.

This was the kind of chaos that happened when people realized the truth they believed in was built on lies.

Guests whispered.

Phones were raised.

Security moved closer.

The wedding that was supposed to unite two families had become the battlefield where thirty years of secrets were finally exposed.

And in the center of it all

stood two women.

Two women claiming to be my mother.

One had raised me.

One had given birth to me.

One had protected me.

One had disappeared.

And now both were looking at me like I was the answer to a question they had spent decades trying to solve.

I looked at the woman beside me.

The stranger who had grabbed my arm in the darkness.

She was older.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

Her clothes were simple.

Nothing about her suggested wealth or power.

Nothing about her suggested she belonged in the Grand Ellison Ballroom.

But her eyes

Her eyes carried something I couldn't explain.

Pain.

The same pain I had seen in Daniel's eyes.

The same pain I had seen in Isabella's eyes.

The pain of someone who had lost something precious.

She held out the old photograph.

"Look."

Her voice trembled.

"Please."

I didn't move.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that if I looked

my entire world would change again.

Isabella stepped forward.

"Emma."

The woman's expression hardened.

"Don't call her that."

Everyone froze.

The woman looked at Isabella.

"That name belongs to the life you created."

A pause.

"Her name is Amelia."

Isabella's face went pale.

My heart raced.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

"My name is Elena."

A pause.

"I was Alexander Vale's first wife."

The ballroom went silent.

Richard grabbed the edge of the table.

"No."

Elena looked at him.

"Yes, Richard."

His face changed.

Like he had just seen a ghost.

"You were supposed to be dead."

Elena smiled sadly.

"That was the story they wanted everyone to believe."

My head was spinning.

"First wife?"

I looked at Isabella.

Then Elena.

"What are you saying?"

Elena took a deep breath.

"I am saying that Alexander Vale was married before Isabella."

The room became silent.

"And I am saying..."

She looked directly at me.

"...you are my daughter."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

I stared at her.

"No."

The word came out automatically.

"No."

Because there was no room left inside me for another truth.

I had discovered I wasn't Emma Carter.

I had discovered I was Amelia Vale.

I had discovered my biological mother was Isabella.

And now another woman appeared claiming everything I knew was wrong.

"I don't understand."

My voice broke.

Elena stepped closer.

"I know."

She looked at Daniel and Sarah.

"They kept you safe."

My eyes narrowed.

"You know them?"

She nodded.

"Of course."

The answer shocked me.

"How?"

She looked at Daniel.

"Because he helped save my daughter."

My father stepped forward slowly.

"Elena..."

His voice was filled with disbelief.

"I thought you were dead."

She smiled sadly.

"So did everyone."

My mother Sarah looked terrified.

"Why are you here now?"

Elena looked at her.

"Because Victor forced me to come out of hiding."

Everyone turned toward Victor.

He looked annoyed.

Not surprised.

That terrified me.

"You knew about her."

Victor smiled.

"I know many things."

Elena pointed at him.

"You knew I was alive."

Victor shrugged.

"You were never important."

The insult was cold.

But Elena didn't react.

Instead, she looked at me.

"He doesn't know everything."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She opened the old photograph.

The picture showed a young woman holding a baby.

The baby had a small bracelet.

My bracelet.

The one I had worn since childhood.

I touched my wrist.

My breath stopped.

"Where did you get that?"

Elena cried.

"Because I gave it to you."

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

Then Sarah.

My father looked away.

My mother began crying.

That reaction told me everything.

"You knew."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Yes."

My heart broke again.

"How many mothers did I have?"

The question came out bitter.

Sarah immediately stepped forward.

"Emma—"

"No."

I looked at her.

"I need the truth."

She nodded.

"You do."

Elena took a breath.

"Alexander had a daughter before Isabella."

I looked at her.

"Me."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"But everyone thought Isabella was my mother."

"Because Alexander married her after we separated."

I looked at Isabella.

She was crying silently.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

The silence.

The endless silence.

Then Isabella finally spoke.

"Because Alexander made me promise."

Everyone turned.

She looked at Elena.

"I'm sorry."

Elena looked away.

"You should be."

The tension between them was impossible to ignore.

I looked at Isabella.

"Tell me."

She swallowed.

"Alexander loved Elena."

The words surprised me.

"He never stopped caring about her."

Elena lowered her eyes.

"But their marriage ended because of the Vale family."

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Why?"

Elena answered.

"Because William Vale believed Alexander was becoming too independent."

A pause.

"He wanted control over his son's life."

My mind raced.

"Then where do I fit into this?"

Elena looked at me.

"You were born during the time when Alexander was trying to escape his family."

My chest tightened.

"And Isabella?"

"She came into his life later."

Isabella nodded.

"Alexander wanted to protect Amelia."

She looked at Elena.

"And you."

Elena's eyes filled with pain.

"But someone decided we were both obstacles."

The room became colder.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Until Thomas spoke.

"The same person who erased every record of Amelia's birth."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas opened another file.

"This is why Alexander created multiple layers of protection."

He looked at me.

"Because he knew someone would try to erase you."

I stared at the documents.

"So who changed my identity?"

Thomas looked at the names.

Then his expression changed.

"Someone inside the legal system."

"Who?"

He slowly lifted his eyes.

"The person who handled Alexander's estate."

A chill went through me.

"Who?"

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Jonathan Vale."

The ballroom erupted.

Jonathan, who had been standing silently near the back, smiled.

"Finally."

Everyone turned.

Richard stepped forward.

"You?"

Jonathan shrugged.

"I was cleaning up a mess."

My father looked furious.

"You erased a child's identity."

Jonathan looked at me.

"I protected an empire."

My hands clenched.

"You stole my life."

He smiled.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"I saved your life."

Nobody moved.

"What?"

Jonathan looked around.

"You all keep pretending Alexander was a hero."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

He pointed at me.

"Your father knew there was going to be a war."

"He knew innocent people would die."

"So he made a choice."

My heart raced.

"What choice?"

Jonathan smiled.

"He chose to sacrifice someone."

A terrible feeling filled my chest.

"Who?"

Jonathan looked directly at me.

"Your mother."

The room went silent.

"Which one?"

Jonathan smiled.

"All of them."

My blood ran cold.

Then he revealed the final piece:

"Alexander Vale did not hide you because someone wanted to kill you."

A pause.

"He hid you because he knew..."

"The person trying to destroy your family..."

"...was the person who loved you the most."

Everyone froze.

My eyes moved slowly across the room.

Daniel.

Sarah.

Isabella.

Elena.

Preston.

Victor.

Jonathan.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a secret.

Then my phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One warning.

"Stop searching for the truth, Amelia. The real betrayal hasn't happened yet."

I looked up.

Because underneath the message was a photo.

A recent photo.

Taken only minutes ago.

A photo of someone leaving the ballroom.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Someone whose identity had never been questioned.

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the person in the picture was

Alexander Vale.
