CHAPTER 8 â The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed To Know

The ballroom disappeared.
Not literally.
The chandeliers were still glowing.
The flowers were still perfectly arranged.
The guests were still standing around me.
But in that momentâŠ
none of it felt real.
Because the one sentence my father had just spoken destroyed the foundation of my entire life.
"You were never born Emma Carter."
I stared at him.
Waiting.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to tell me it was a misunderstanding.
Waiting for someone to say this was another cruel game being played by the Vale family.
But nobody did.
My father looked broken.
My mother was crying.
And Preston...
Preston looked like he had just discovered a secret even he didn't know.
"Explain."
My voice was barely a whisper.
"Dad."
I swallowed.
"Explain what you mean."
My father looked at the ground.
The same way he had looked earlier when he was sitting behind that marble column.
The same way he looked whenever he carried pain he didn't want me to see.
But this time...
I refused to let him hide.
"No more secrets."
My voice became stronger.
"Not today."
My father closed his eyes.
Then he nodded.
"You're right."
A long silence followed.
Then he finally began.
"Thirty years ago, after everything happened with Carter Holdings, I thought I had lost everything."
He looked at me.
"But then I found you."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
My mother reached for my hand.
Her tears fell silently.
"Emma..."
She whispered my name.
"But that wasn't your name."
The room became completely silent.
I looked between them.
"Who was I?"
My father took a shaky breath.
"Your real name was..."
He paused.
Like saying it hurt.
"Amelia."
The name felt strange.
Foreign.
Like it belonged to someone else.
"Amelia what?"
My father looked at Richard.
Then at Thomas.
Then finally at me.
"Amelia Vale."
The room erupted.
A hundred voices.
A hundred reactions.
But I heard none of them.
Because the world had stopped.
I looked at Preston.
He looked horrified.
"No..."
He whispered.
I turned toward him.
"You knew?"
His face changed.
"No."
He shook his head.
"No, Emma, I swear."
"Amelia Vale?"
My voice cracked.
"You knew my family."
He stepped forward.
"I didn't know."
"Didn't know what?"
I pointed at myself.
"That I was connected to yours?"
He looked devastated.
"I didn't know."
But I couldn't tell what hurt more.
The possibility that he was lying...
or the possibility that he was telling the truth.
My father continued.
"Your biological father was William Vale's oldest son."
Everyone froze.
Richard looked like the air had been knocked out of him.
"Alexander..."
He whispered.
My father nodded.
"Yes."
The name meant something.
Because Richard knew it.
Cynthia knew it.
Preston knew it.
Everyone except me.
"Who was Alexander Vale?"
Richard stepped forward slowly.
His face was filled with regret.
"Your father."
I looked at him.
"My father?"
Richard nodded.
"Alexander was my older brother."
My knees almost gave out.
My entire life...
I thought I knew where I came from.
I thought I knew my family.
I thought my parents were Daniel and Sarah Carter.
And they were.
They were my parents in every way that mattered.
But now I discovered my bloodline belonged to the very family that had destroyed us.
The family I was about to marry into.
The family that had humiliated my parents.
I looked at my mother.
"Mom..."
She immediately held my hands.
"You are our daughter."
Her voice was firm.
"Nothing changes that."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I carried you through every nightmare."
"I held you when you were sick."
"I stayed awake when you cried."
She squeezed my hands.
"Blood doesn't decide who loves you."
Those words broke me.
Because she was right.
The people who raised me were the people who chose me.
Not the people connected by DNA.
But I still needed answers.
"How did I become a Carter?"
My father looked at Thomas.
Thomas stepped forward.
"Because your parents saved you."
I looked at him.
"From what?"
He hesitated.
Then answered:
"From the same people who are standing in this room."
A chill went through me.
The guests became uncomfortable.
Thomas opened another file.
"The night Alexander Vale died, he discovered his father's plan."
Richard lowered his head.
"What plan?"
Thomas looked at him.
"The plan to steal Carter Holdings and eliminate anyone who could challenge him."
Richard looked sick.
"My father..."
"Yes."
Thomas nodded.
"But Alexander found out."
He looked at me.
"And he tried to protect his daughter."
My heart raced.
"What happened?"
Thomas looked at the old document.
"Alexander created a trust."
The same type of trust my grandfather had created.
"A trust that would transfer everything to you when you turned twenty-five."
I frowned.
"Then why didn't I know?"
"Because someone erased your identity."
The words landed like a stone.
Thomas continued.
"After Alexander's death, Daniel and Sarah found you."
My father held my mother's hand.
"You were only three years old."
My eyes filled with tears.
"Three?"
My mother nodded.
"You were standing outside the old Carter estate."
"Alone."
My father looked away.
"The people who were supposed to protect you were gone."
I covered my mouth.
"So you adopted me?"
My mother smiled sadly.
"We didn't adopt you because we felt sorry for you."
She touched my cheek.
"We adopted you because the moment we saw you..."
"We knew you were our daughter."
The ballroom was silent.
Even Cynthia looked uncomfortable.
But then Victor Blackwell spoke.
"Beautiful story."
Everyone turned.
His voice was cold.
"But incomplete."
My father looked at him.
"Victor."
Victor smiled.
"Daniel always was good at telling the parts that make him look noble."
I narrowed my eyes.
"What are you saying?"
Victor stepped forward.
"I'm saying your father didn't just find you."
He looked at Daniel.
"He took you."
My heart stopped.
"Dad?"
My father immediately shook his head.
"No."
Victor continued.
"He knew exactly who you were."
My father looked furious.
"Because I was trying to save her!"
Victor smiled.
"Or because you knew she would inherit everything?"
The accusation hung in the air.
I looked at my father.
For the first time...
a tiny doubt appeared.
Not because I believed Victor.
But because I realized something terrifying.
Everyone had a version of the truth.
And I was the only person who didn't know any of them.
Then Richard suddenly spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
He looked at Victor.
"You have no right to question Daniel."
Victor smiled.
"Why?"
Richard's face became serious.
"Because you were the one who tried to kill Alexander."
The ballroom froze.
Victor's smile disappeared.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"What?"
Richard looked at me.
"Emma..."
His voice shook.
"The man who destroyed your family..."
"He was never William Vale."
A pause.
"He was Victor Blackwell."
The entire room turned toward Victor.
But Victor didn't deny it.
Instead...
he smiled.
A cold, terrifying smile.
"Finally."
He adjusted his jacket.
"Someone finally understands."
My blood ran cold.
Richard stepped forward.
"Why?"
Victor looked at me.
"Because your grandfather made one mistake."
"What mistake?"
Victor's eyes locked onto mine.
"He left everything to you."
A silence.
Then he said:
"And I spent thirty years making sure you would never live long enough to claim it."
The room gasped.
My mother grabbed my arm.
My father stepped in front of me.
And for the first time that day...
I saw genuine fear on Daniel Carter's face.
Because this was no longer about a wedding.
No longer about inheritance.
No longer about betrayal.
Someone had spent thirty years trying to erase me.
And now...
they finally knew I was alive.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
A police officer walked inside.
Holding a sealed envelope.
"Excuse me."
Everyone turned.
The officer looked directly at me.
"Are you Emma Carter?"
I froze.
"Yes."
He handed me the envelope.
"I was instructed to deliver this only if you were ever confronted with the truth about your identity."
My hands trembled.
"Who instructed you?"
The officer looked at the document.
Then answered:
"Your biological father."
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line made my heart stop:
"My dearest Amelia... if you are reading this, it means the people I feared have finally found you."
I looked up.
Because my biological father had been dead for decades.
May you like
But somehow...
he was still trying to protect me.
