CHAPTER 15 — The Father Who Hid The Final Secret

The name remained on the document.

A single signature.

A single name.

A name that should have brought me comfort.

Instead

it shattered everything.

Alexander Vale.

My biological father.

The man I had spent the last few hours discovering.

The man who left letters to protect me.

The man who supposedly sacrificed everything so I could survive.

The man everyone described as a victim.

But now his signature was sitting on a document connected to Victor Blackwell.

A man who destroyed my family.

A man who threatened my life.

My hands began shaking.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

Then louder.

"No."

I looked at Thomas.

"That can't be true."

Thomas didn't look away.

"I wish it wasn't."

I turned toward Isabella.

"My father signed a deal with Victor?"

She looked devastated.

"Emma..."

"Amelia."

I corrected myself without thinking.

The name felt strange.

But somehow, after everything I had learned, it also felt like a missing piece.

"Tell me the truth."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I don't know everything."

That answer confused me.

"What do you mean?"

She looked at the document.

"Alexander signed something."

A pause.

"But not what Victor wants everyone to believe."

Victor smiled.

"Of course."

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked confident again.

Because for the first time since he entered the ballroom, he believed he had control.

"Alexander was not the innocent man everyone remembers."

My father stepped forward.

"Don't."

Victor ignored him.

"He was ambitious."

"He wanted power."

"He wanted revenge."

He looked at me.

"Your father and I were not enemies at first."

The room became quiet.

"We were partners."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

Victor smiled.

"Alexander came to me."

Richard looked shocked.

"Impossible."

Victor laughed.

"Your family always loved pretending Alexander was perfect."

He looked at the old document.

"But he wasn't."

I stared at Isabella.

"Is this true?"

She hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

Because it meant there was something.

Finally, she spoke.

"Yes."

The ballroom froze.

My father looked at her.

"Isabella..."

She looked at him sadly.

"Daniel, she deserves the truth."

My heart sank.

"Tell me."

Isabella took a deep breath.

"After Alexander discovered the betrayal inside the company, he realized he couldn't defeat Victor and Edward through normal methods."

She looked at me.

"So he created a plan."

"What plan?"

"A plan to destroy them from within."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"That explains the agreement."

I looked at him.

"Explain."

He walked toward the document.

"This wasn't a partnership."

He pointed at the signature.

"It was a trap."

Victor's expression changed slightly.

Thomas continued.

"Alexander knew Victor wanted control of Carter Holdings."

"He knew Victor wanted access to the Vale family's wealth."

"So Alexander offered him something."

"What?"

Thomas looked at me.

"A fake opportunity."

Silence.

My father nodded.

"Alexander pretended to join Victor."

My eyes widened.

"He infiltrated them."

"Yes."

Isabella whispered.

"He became someone they trusted."

A cold realization hit me.

"My father was pretending to betray everyone..."

"Because he was trying to expose them."

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly."

The room changed.

The story changed.

Again.

Alexander wasn't a villain.

He wasn't a simple victim.

He was playing a dangerous game.

A game that cost him his life.

But one question remained.

"Then why did he die?"

Nobody answered.

Victor smiled.

Because he knew.

"He made one mistake."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"He underestimated the person closest to him."

Everyone became tense.

Richard looked around.

"Who?"

Victor's eyes moved slowly across the room.

Then stopped.

On Isabella.

My mother.

My heart stopped.

"No."

Isabella stepped back.

"Don't."

Victor smiled.

"Tell her."

My father moved between them.

"Enough."

But Victor continued.

"Alexander's biggest mistake was trusting Isabella."

The ballroom erupted.

"Stop lying!"

My father shouted.

But Isabella didn't move.

She looked broken.

And that scared me more than Victor's accusation.

Because if she knew he was lying

why did she look afraid?

I turned toward her.

"Mom..."

The word slipped out.

And everyone noticed.

Even Isabella.

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

Two words.

But they carried everything.

My heart sank.

"What are you apologizing for?"

She looked at Alexander's signature.

"Because your father died believing I betrayed him."

The room became silent.

I felt dizzy.

"Did you?"

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

That answer shocked me.

"You don't know?"

She shook her head.

"The night Alexander died..."

Her voice trembled.

"I was there."

A pause.

"I saw him arguing with someone."

"Who?"

She looked toward Victor.

Then toward Edward.

Then toward Richard.

"I never saw his face."

The silence grew.

"Why?"

"Because the person was wearing a mask."

My chest tightened.

"So how do you know it wasn't you?"

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Isabella looked like I had stabbed her.

But she answered.

"Because Alexander died holding something."

"What?"

"A piece of evidence."

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

"What evidence?"

Isabella reached into her handbag.

Everyone froze.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

Sealed.

"I kept this for thirty years."

My father stared.

"Isabella..."

"I was afraid."

She looked at me.

"But now she deserves to know."

She handed it to me.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

My breath stopped.

It showed Alexander Vale standing outside the Carter estate.

Beside him...

was a woman.

A woman I recognized.

Not from my memories.

From old family photographs.

My biological grandmother.

But there was something else.

Written on the back of the photograph was a sentence:

"If anything happens to me, the person who betrayed me is the woman standing beside me."

My hands went cold.

I looked at Isabella.

Then at the photograph.

Because the woman standing beside Alexander

was not Isabella.

It was someone else.

Someone everyone in the room knew.

Someone who had been pretending to help me all day.

Someone who had cried with me.

Someone who had told me she loved me.

My eyes slowly moved toward her.

Sarah Carter.

My adoptive mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who saved me.

The woman I trusted more than anyone.

She saw the photograph.

And her face turned completely white.

"Emma..."

Her voice shook.

"Please."

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly the question was no longer:

Who destroyed the Vale family?

The question was:

Why was my mother standing beside the man who died trying to save me?

Sarah took one step forward.

And whispered:

"I can explain."

But before she could say another word...

the ballroom doors slammed open.

A man rushed inside.

He was holding a folder.

His face was terrified.

"Mr. Carter!"

Everyone turned.

The man looked at me.

"Emma, you need to leave immediately."

My heart raced.

"Why?"

He looked toward Victor.

Then toward Sarah.

"Because the person who leaked your identity..."

A pause.

"Is planning to kill you tonight."

The entire ballroom froze.

Then he said:

"And we know who gave the order."

Everyone waited.

The man opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A surveillance image.

The person giving the order was clearly visible.

And when I saw the face...

my entire world collapsed.

May you like

Because the person who wanted me dead

was the last person I ever expected.
