CHAPTER 18 â The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The photograph shook in my hand.
I stared at the screen.
Then I looked at the timestamp.
Captured: 11:47 PM.
Only minutes ago.
Not thirty years ago.
Not an old family photo.
Not a memory.
A current photograph.
A living person.
A man walking away from the Grand Ellison Ballroom.
A man whose face I had seen countless times in the documents, portraits, and stories that had surrounded my entire life.
Alexander Vale.
My father.
The man everyone said was dead.
The man whose death started this nightmare.
The man whose final words, final wishes, and final secrets had controlled my life.
Alive.
I couldn't breathe.
"No..."
The word escaped my lips.
Everyone looked at me.
Preston stepped closer.
"Emma?"
I didn't answer.
I turned the phone toward him.
The moment he saw the picture...
his face changed.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Recognition.
And that terrified me.
"You know him."
It wasn't a question.
Preston looked away.
"Preston."
My voice became colder.
"You know him."
He swallowed.
"I've seen him before."
The ballroom exploded.
"What?"
Richard stepped forward.
"Explain yourself."
Preston looked around.
Everyone was demanding answers.
But his eyes stayed on me.
"I didn't know he was alive."
"Then how have you seen him?"
A painful silence.
Then Preston whispered:
"Because Alexander contacted me."
The room froze.
My heart stopped.
"When?"
"Six months ago."
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
"Six months?"
I laughed quietly.
"Six months ago you were planning our wedding."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"And you were talking to my father."
"Yes."
"While pretending you didn't know anything."
His face broke.
"I was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
My voice trembled.
"But somehow protecting me always means lying to me."
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew it was true.
Thomas stepped forward.
"What did Alexander tell you?"
Preston looked at him.
"He told me not to marry Amelia."
The entire room went silent.
I stared at him.
"What?"
Preston looked at me.
"He told me to leave you before the wedding."
My heart tightened.
"Why?"
He looked at the floor.
"Because he said anyone close to you would become a target."
A pause.
"He said marrying me would put you in danger."
Victor laughed.
"Convenient story."
Everyone turned.
Victor smiled.
"Dead men returning."
"Secret daughters."
"Fake identities."
"Now a missing father."
He shook his head.
"How dramatic."
But nobody laughed.
Because somehowâŠ
everything impossible had already happened.
I looked at Preston.
"Did you believe him?"
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
"Yes."
The answer surprised me.
"Why?"
"Because he showed me proof."
"What proof?"
Preston looked at Jonathan.
Everyone noticed.
Jonathan's expression changed.
"What?"
Preston continued:
"Alexander showed me documents proving someone had been tracking Amelia since childhood."
My father stepped forward.
"Who?"
Preston looked at him.
"I don't know."
"You met him."
"Yes."
"And he didn't tell you?"
"No."
Preston looked frustrated.
"He trusted very few people."
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Sounds familiar."
Then Isabella suddenly stepped forward.
"Where did you meet him?"
Preston looked at her.
"An old property outside the city."
Isabella froze.
"What property?"
"The Vale mountain house."
Her face went pale.
"Impossible."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
Because she was shaking.
"Because that house burned down the night Alexander died."
Silence.
Everyone looked at her.
Preston frowned.
"No."
He shook his head.
"The house was intact."
Isabella stepped back.
"No."
Her voice became smaller.
"No, that's impossible."
My father looked at her.
"What are you saying?"
She looked terrified.
"The night Alexander disappeared..."
A pause.
"That was the night they told me he died."
She looked at me.
"But I never saw his body."
The room became silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly everyone realized the same thing.
Nobody had ever confirmed Alexander's death.
They had only accepted the story.
Thomas slowly opened his laptop.
"I need to check something."
Everyone watched as he searched through old records.
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
My father asked.
Thomas looked up.
"The death certificate."
"What about it?"
He turned the screen.
"The signature is wrong."
Richard frowned.
"Wrong?"
Thomas nodded.
"Alexander's official documents were always signed with his middle initial."
He pointed.
"But this certificate doesn't have it."
A cold feeling spread through the room.
Someone had forged Alexander Vale's death.
Someone wanted everyone to believe he was gone.
But why?
A voice interrupted.
"Because dead men are easier to control."
Everyone turned.
Jonathan.
He stood near the doorway.
Calm.
Almost amused.
My eyes narrowed.
"You know."
Jonathan smiled.
"I know more than any of you."
My father moved toward him.
"You were involved."
Jonathan didn't deny it.
"I was."
The admission shocked everyone.
Richard stared.
"Why?"
Jonathan looked at me.
"Because Alexander asked me to."
I froze.
"What?"
Jonathan stepped closer.
"Your father knew someone would try to destroy you."
He looked around the room.
"And he knew nobody would believe the truth unless everything fell apart."
I shook my head.
"You're saying this entire nightmare..."
"Was planned."
My heart sank.
Jonathan nodded.
"Yes."
"By my father?"
"Yes."
The room went silent.
I felt betrayed all over again.
"My father created this?"
Jonathan looked at me.
"Your father created a trap."
A pause.
"But he never expected you would be the one caught inside it."
I stared at him.
"What trap?"
Jonathan reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Sealed.
The same style as Alexander's letters.
"He left this for you."
I didn't move.
"Why didn't you give it to me before?"
Jonathan looked away.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
His answer was quiet.
"Of what it would reveal."
My fingers trembled as I took the envelope.
The seal had one symbol.
A symbol I recognized.
The Carter family crest.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only a few lines.
But every word destroyed another piece of my reality.
Amelia,
If you are reading this, then I failed to return.
But understand one thing.
I was never running from my enemies.
I was hiding from my greatest mistake.
The person who betrayed me was not someone who hated me.
It was someone who loved me.
Someone I trusted with my life.
Someone who promised to protect our daughter.
Do not trust the woman who tells you she saved you.
Because she knows the truth about the night I disappeared.
Ask Sarah Carter what happened after midnight.
â Alexander
My hands went numb.
Everyone saw my expression.
My father whispered:
"Sarah..."
Slowly...
everyone turned toward her.
My mother.
Sarah Carter.
She stood frozen.
Her face had lost all color.
"Sarah?"
I looked at her.
"What happened after midnight?"
She didn't answer.
"Mom."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I..."
She stopped.
Because whatever she was about to say...
was something she had hidden for thirty years.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
A man walked inside.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
Everyone gasped.
Because he was carrying an old cane.
A cane I recognized from the photograph.
The man looked directly at me.
And whispered:
"Amelia."
My heart stopped.
Because this time...
there was no photograph.
No rumor.
No hidden message.
He was standing right in front of me.
Alexander Vale.
Alive.
He looked at Sarah.
Then at Isabella.
Then at me.
And the first words he said were:
"I'm sorry."
A pause.
"Because the truth is..."
He looked toward Sarah.
"Your mother didn't betray me."
The room froze.
"She saved me."
Everyone stared.
Then Alexander revealed the sentence that changed everything:
"The person who tried to kill me..."
"...was the person you all trusted to protect Amelia."
His eyes moved across the room.
And stopped on one person.
May you like
Daniel Carter.
My father.
