CHAPTER 16 — The Face Behind The Betrayal

The folder slipped from the man's trembling hands.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not even Victor.

The entire ballroom seemed frozen between disbelief and horror.

I stared at the photograph inside the folder.

A surveillance image.

A clear image.

A person sitting in a private office.

A person giving instructions.

A person whose voice had been recorded.

A person whose betrayal had been hidden for years.

My eyes moved slowly across the photograph.

And then they stopped.

My breath disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

I had trusted that face.

I had loved that face.

The person in the photograph was

Sarah Carter.

My mother.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had held me when I was sick.

The woman who had spent thirty years protecting me.

The woman who had just stood in front of everyone and cried because she loved me.

I looked at her.

And she looked back at me.

But this time

she didn't look like my mother.

She looked like someone who had finally been exposed.

"Emma..."

Her voice was shaking.

I couldn't answer.

I couldn't even breathe.

The room around me became distant.

All I could see was that photograph.

Sarah sitting across from a man.

A man whose face was partially hidden.

But the timestamp was clear.

The meeting happened only weeks before my wedding.

Only weeks before today.

Only weeks before my entire life collapsed.

My father stepped forward.

"Give me that."

The man handed him the folder.

Daniel Carter looked at the photograph.

And the color drained from his face.

"No..."

The word escaped him.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

Deep, unbearable pain.

Because he wasn't looking at a stranger.

He was looking at the woman he loved.

His wife.

Sarah immediately stepped forward.

"Daniel, listen to me."

He looked at her.

"Is it true?"

The silence answered.

My father shook his head slowly.

"After everything..."

His voice broke.

"After everything we did to protect her..."

Sarah started crying.

"I can explain."

Everyone had said those words today.

Preston.

Lillian.

Richard.

Isabella.

Everyone who had hidden something.

Everyone who had hurt me.

And now my mother was saying them too.

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

"Explain."

I looked at her.

"That's all anyone ever says."

She stepped closer.

"Emma, please."

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"Not please."

I pointed at the photograph.

"Tell me what this is."

Sarah looked at the image.

Then at me.

"It isn't what you think."

I shook my head.

"Then what is it?"

She had no answer.

And that silence was worse than any confession.

Victor smiled.

A slow, satisfied smile.

"Finally."

Everyone turned toward him.

"The truth is finally coming out."

My father glared at him.

"Don't pretend you care about the truth."

Victor laughed.

"I care about winning."

The honesty shocked everyone.

At least he wasn't pretending.

I turned toward Sarah again.

"Who were you meeting?"

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"Edward Vale."

The ballroom exploded.

Richard stood immediately.

"Impossible."

Sarah looked at him.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"It's true."

My heart sank.

"Edward?"

The man everyone believed was the mastermind.

The man who had returned from hiding.

The man who had been exposed as part of the conspiracy.

My mother had been meeting him.

"Why?"

Sarah looked at me.

"Because I needed answers."

"Answers?"

I stared at her.

"You could have asked."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I didn't trust anyone."

The words hurt.

"Not even Dad?"

She looked at Daniel.

A painful silence.

"Especially not Daniel."

My father looked devastated.

"Sarah..."

She cried.

"I'm sorry."

The room became quiet.

My mother continued.

"When we found Amelia..."

She looked at me.

"I knew the danger wasn't over."

My father's expression changed.

"What are you saying?"

Sarah looked at him.

"I found documents."

"What documents?"

"Documents showing Alexander wasn't only investigating Victor."

She looked at Isabella.

"He was investigating everyone."

Isabella froze.

Sarah continued.

"Alexander believed someone close to him was involved."

My eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

She looked at the photograph.

"The person who gave Victor information."

A pause.

"The person who revealed where Alexander was hiding."

Everyone waited.

Then she said:

"It wasn't Edward."

"Then who?"

Sarah looked at me.

And the answer destroyed me.

"It was your biological mother."

The room went silent.

Isabella stepped back.

"No."

Sarah looked at her.

"Yes."

My heart raced.

"No."

I looked between them.

"Someone is lying."

But who?

That was the nightmare.

Everyone had a different version of the truth.

Every person had evidence.

Every person had secrets.

Sarah walked toward me.

"Emma, I never wanted you to know this."

"Why?"

"Because I knew what it would do to you."

"What?"

She swallowed.

"Make you question everyone."

She looked around.

"And that's exactly what happened."

I said nothing.

Because she was right.

I didn't know who to trust anymore.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Sarah."

His voice was cold.

"How long have you known about Isabella?"

My mother looked at him.

"Years."

The room froze.

"You knew she was alive?"

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

My father stepped back.

"And you never told me?"

She looked broken.

"I was protecting Emma."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Everyone uses that excuse."

The words hurt because they were true.

Then suddenly...

the lights went out.

The ballroom plunged into darkness.

People screamed.

Glass shattered.

Someone knocked over a table.

I heard footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

Moving toward me.

My father's voice shouted:

"Emma!"

A hand grabbed my arm.

I tried to pull away.

But the person whispered something that stopped me.

Something only one person in the world would know.

A secret from my childhood.

A secret nobody else knew.

The voice whispered:

"The little girl who hated thunderstorms always hid under the blue blanket."

My body froze.

Because that was true.

Only one person had ever said that to me.

My mother.

Sarah.

But she was standing across the room.

Then who was holding my arm?

The lights suddenly returned.

Everyone looked.

And I screamed.

Because the person standing beside me...

was not Sarah.

It was another woman.

Older.

Terrified.

Holding an old photograph.

A photograph of me as a child.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

And whispered:

"Amelia..."

"I am your real mother."

The entire ballroom went silent.

I turned toward Isabella.

She was standing near the stage.

Alive.

Watching.

Confused.

The woman beside me looked directly at her.

And said:

"Isabella..."

"You stole my daughter."

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly there was another impossible truth.

Another woman claiming to be my mother.

Another secret buried for thirty years.

May you like

And this time

I had no idea who was telling the truth.
