Chapter 5 - The Woman in White

Celeste requested a private meeting.

I almost refused.

Samuel convinced me to hear her out.

She arrived without makeup.

Without her usual entourage.

Without her father.

For the first time, she looked less like a socialite and more like a frightened thirty-one-year-old woman who had finally realized her family might not be untouchable.

“I didn’t know about your mother.”

“Which part?”

She flinched.

“The accident.”

“Do you know it was an accident?”

Silence.

I leaned forward.

“What did Marcus tell you about me?”

“That you had surrendered control.”

“Why?”

“He said you wanted money but not responsibility.”

“And you believed him.”

“He’s my father.”

“So?”

Her eyes hardened.

“You don’t know what it’s like being raised by Marcus Harrington.”

“No.”

I touched the healing cut on my lip.

“But I know what it’s like being dragged across a floor by his daughter.”

She looked away.

Then she handed me a keycard.

“Adrian keeps a private office at the Harrington residence.”

“Why are you helping me?”

“I’m not helping you.”

She stood.

“I’m finding out whether the man I’m supposed to marry helped kill a woman.”

At the door, she stopped.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Your mother called our house the night she died.”

My blood went cold.

“Who answered?”

May you like

Celeste looked at me.

“Adrian.”
