Chapter 10 - My Mother Was Alive
The official report said Eleanor Vale died on impact.
That was a lie.
An emergency medical technician named Thomas Avery contacted Samuel after seeing my face on television.
He had responded to the crash.
“My partner and I got there first.”
“Was she alive?”
Avery lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The room tilted.
“She was conscious?”
“For several minutes.”
I gripped the table.
“What did she say?”
“She kept asking us to call you.”
I couldn’t speak.
Avery continued.
Then a private ambulance arrived.
It belonged to a medical transport company under contract with Solmere.
They claimed they had authority to transfer my mother.
Avery objected.
His supervisor ordered him to stand down.
My mother was taken away.
The hospital receiving log showed her arriving fifty-six minutes later.
Dead.
I stared at Samuel.
“Where was she during those fifty-six minutes?”
Nobody knew.
But the ambulance company had been purchased six months earlier.
