Chapter 15 - The Day I Lost Everything

The judge did not give Marcus permanent control.

He did something almost as bad.

He appointed an independent receiver.

Until ownership and fraud claims were resolved, I lost operational authority.

So did Marcus.

But the uncertainty scared lenders.

Our bridge financing collapsed.

Three hotels missed payroll.

Reporters surrounded headquarters.

Employees blamed the board.

Some blamed me.

That night, I entered the Solmere lobby alone.

The same marble floor.

The same chandeliers.

No gala now.

No cameras.

Just silence.

Daniel found me sitting beside the fountain.

“We’re going to lose it.”

He sat beside me.

“Maybe.”

“I thought you were supposed to encourage me.”

“I’m a hotel manager.”

He smiled.

“I deal in realistic expectations.”

Then he handed me an envelope.

A maintenance worker had found it behind the painting in Room 1708.

My mother’s handwriting covered the front.

CHARLOTTE – IF THEY TAKE THE COMPANY, GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING.

Inside was one sentence.

Grandfather never trusted the trust.

I read it twice.

Then I knew.

The Vale Family Trust everyone was fighting over was not the original ownership instrument.

There was another document.

May you like

Older.

And if it still existed, Marcus had been fighting over the wrong piece of paper from the beginning.
