Chapter 19 - Lock Every Exit

Guests screamed.
My mother’s face filled every screen.
The recording was different from the one in Room 1708.
“I know what they are planning.”
The ballroom went silent.
“Marcus believes Adrian works for him.”
My heart stopped.
“He doesn’t.”
The video continued.
“Adrian began moving money before Marcus ever joined the scheme.”
People turned toward one another.
My mother named accounts.
Politicians.
Developers.
Private-equity partners.
Adrian had used Solmere as a laundering network.
Marcus had believed he was becoming an owner.
In reality, he had been helping Adrian build an escape fund.
Then Adrian’s voice came over the ballroom speakers.
“Very impressive, Charlotte.”
I looked toward the control balcony.
Nothing.
“You should have stayed away.”
I took the microphone from the stage.
“You dragged my mother into this.”
“No.”
Adrian laughed.
“Your mother walked into it herself.”
Daniel whispered through my earpiece.
“We found him.”
“Where?”
“Service level.”
I looked toward the exits.
“Lock every exterior door except the emergency routes.”
Federal agents moved.
Adrian was attempting to reach the underground garage.
I followed despite Samuel shouting behind me.
I found him beside the loading dock.
He held my mother’s phone.
“You really are Eleanor’s daughter.”
“You killed her.”
“Marcus killed her.”
“You made it possible.”
He shrugged.
“In business, possibilities are everything.”
He placed the phone on the concrete.
“You want this?”
“Yes.”
“Then let me leave.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
His smile faded.
“You think ownership makes you powerful?”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“Evidence does.”
A red light blinked above us.
Security camera.
Daniel’s voice came through the speaker.
“We got all of it.”
Adrian ran.
He made it twelve feet.
Federal agents came through both doors.
He stopped.
For the first time since I had returned to Solmere, Adrian Mercer looked afraid.
I walked over and picked up my mother’s phone.
There was one final audio file.
My mother’s voice.
Weak.
Recorded inside the ambulance.
“Charlotte…”
I covered my mouth.
“If you ever hear this, don’t spend your life avenging me.”
Tears blurred my vision.
“Build something they can’t corrupt.”
Behind me, agents placed Adrian in handcuffs.
My mother’s voice continued.
“And remember…”
A breath.
Then:
“You were never the inheritance.”
May you like
I closed my eyes.
“You were always the future.”
