Chapter 4 - Room 1708

My mother’s recording lasted nine minutes.

Nine minutes that destroyed eighteen months of lies.

She had discovered unauthorized transfers months before her death.

She believed Marcus and Adrian were creating fictitious acquisitions, moving Solmere money offshore, and purchasing distressed hotels through shell companies they secretly controlled.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“I confronted Marcus.”

My mother paused.

“He told me ownership is only meaningful if the owner survives long enough to exercise it.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Samuel rewound the recording.

We listened again.

The same words.

My mother had known.

She had been afraid.

And yet she had still gotten into her car that night.

Why?

The answer was hidden in another file.

A photograph.

A handwritten ledger.

Six names.

Marcus Harrington.

Adrian Mercer.

Paul Kessler.

James Bell.

Richard Sloan.

And Julian Vale.

I stared at the last name.

My cousin.

My closest living relative.

The man who had held me while I cried at my mother’s funeral.

“No,” I whispered.

Samuel said nothing.

The ledger contained dates and percentages.

Beside Julian’s name:

5% upon transfer completion.

I felt sick.

Then Daniel noticed something.

The ledger wasn’t complete.

Pages had been removed.

One remained partially torn.

Three words were still visible.

Orchid Room Archive.

The Orchid Room was not a room.

It was the original records vault beneath the first Solmere property.

And according to company records, it had been sealed twenty-six years ago.
