CHAPTER 8 — PROJECT PHOENIX

The abandoned railway station fell into complete silence.
Claire stared at the yellowed folder resting in her lap.
Her hands refused to move.
The words on the cover blurred through her tears.
PROJECT PHOENIX
She had spent twenty-three years believing she was searching for the truth about her father.
Now she wasn't even certain who she really was.
Marcus Hale gently closed the folder.
"You don't have to read this now."
Claire looked at him.
"If I stop now..."
Her voice trembled.
"...Richard died for nothing."
Samuel nodded solemnly.
"Then you deserve to know everything."
He sat across from her, looking decades older than he had only an hour before.
"There are truths that destroy people, Claire."
"I've already lost everything."
Samuel shook his head.
"No."
"You've only begun."
He opened the file to the first page.
It wasn't a government report.
It was a contract.
Signed twenty-four years earlier.
At the top were the names of six founding organizations.
Voss Medical Research Institute
Ashford International Foundation
St. Gabriel Children's Hospital
The National Child Development Agency
Northbridge Genetics Laboratory
The Valen Trust
Claire's breathing slowed.
"These organizations worked together?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"Officially... yes."
"What was Project Phoenix?"
"No one called it that at first."
"It began as a rescue program."
Marcus frowned.
"For abandoned children?"
Samuel nodded.
"After a civil conflict overseas, hundreds of orphaned infants were brought into the country."
"The government couldn't care for them."
"So private organizations volunteered."
Claire whispered,
"My mother..."
Samuel closed his eyes.
"Victoria volunteered on the very first day."
Victoria Hale Voss had been one of the country's youngest pediatric surgeons.
Brilliant.
Compassionate.
Completely devoted to children.
She believed every child deserved a family.
Every child deserved a future.
She trusted everyone involved in the program.
Especially Adrian Valen.
At the time, Valen publicly presented himself as one of the nation's greatest philanthropists.
He donated hospitals.
Built schools.
Funded orphanages.
He became a national hero.
No one knew what happened behind closed doors.
"The first year was genuine," Samuel continued.
"Hundreds of children found loving homes."
"Then Valen changed the project."
"How?"
"He realized something."
Samuel's expression darkened.
"The world's most powerful people all shared the same weakness."
Claire frowned.
"Their children."
Samuel nodded.
"So he created a market."
Marcus stared at him.
"You mean..."
Samuel finished the sentence.
"He secretly replaced babies."
Silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Ethan spoke first.
"That's impossible."
"I wish it were."
Samuel opened another section of the file.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Hospital nurseries.
Birth records.
DNA reports.
Forged adoption certificates.
Every document carried official government seals.
Perfectly authentic.
Perfectly illegal.
"Powerful families received children who weren't biologically theirs."
Samuel explained.
"Their real babies disappeared."
Claire's voice cracked.
"And the missing babies?"
Samuel looked away.
"Some were sold."
"Some disappeared forever."
"And a handful..."
He looked back at Claire.
"...were hidden."
Marcus suddenly remembered something.
"When I was sixteen..."
"My parents argued every night."
Samuel remained silent.
Marcus continued.
"My father kept insisting Victoria had become obsessed with a secret."
"She stopped sleeping."
"She said babies were disappearing."
"I thought grief had driven her mad."
Samuel whispered,
"She wasn't grieving."
"She was investigating."
Claire slowly turned another page.
A photograph slipped onto the table.
A woman smiled while holding a newborn baby.
On the back, someone had written:
Mother: Isabella Marino
Infant Number: 37
Claire froze.
Her heartbeat became deafening.
Samuel noticed immediately.
"What's wrong?"
Claire handed him the photograph.
"Who is she?"
Samuel's face lost all color.
"No..."
Marcus leaned forward.
"What?"
Samuel stared at the smiling woman.
"I haven't seen this picture in twenty-three years."
"Who is she?"
Samuel swallowed hard.
"Isabella Marino."
Claire waited.
Samuel's voice dropped to almost a whisper.
"Your biological mother."
The room fell silent.
Claire looked at the photograph again.
The woman had her eyes.
The same smile.
The same small dimple on her left cheek.
Tears streamed down Claire's face.
"She..."
Her voice broke.
"She looks like me."
Samuel nodded.
"She was one of the kindest women I've ever known."
"What happened to her?"
Samuel didn't answer.
Instead...
He handed Claire another photograph.
It showed Isabella standing beside a young man.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Wearing a military uniform.
His arm wrapped protectively around her shoulders.
On the back of the photograph were four handwritten words.
Waiting for our daughter.
Claire smiled through tears.
"My father?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"No."
Claire's smile disappeared.
"What?"
"That isn't Alexander."
Marcus looked closer.
"Then who is he?"
Samuel took a slow breath.
"Captain Gabriel Marino."
"The commander of the Special Intelligence Division."
"He uncovered Project Phoenix."
Claire felt her heart stop.
"My real father..."
Samuel nodded.
"He spent three years gathering evidence."
"What happened?"
"He vanished."
"Vanished?"
"Officially."
Samuel looked toward the tunnel entrance.
"Unofficially..."
His voice hardened.
"...Valen had him executed."
Across the city...
Inside Valen's private estate...
The old man watched Claire through a hidden camera embedded inside the railway station years earlier.
Victor stood nearby.
"They found the Phoenix file."
"I know."
"They've identified Isabella."
"I expected they would."
Victor hesitated.
"Should we eliminate Samuel now?"
Valen smiled faintly.
"No."
"He's finally doing exactly what I need."
Victor looked confused.
"He's giving Claire answers."
"Exactly."
Valen leaned on his silver cane.
"Every answer leads her closer to the one thing I still can't find."
"The Legacy."
Victor frowned.
"You still think she knows where it is?"
Valen's smile widened.
"Not yet."
"But memories are strange."
"They return when people stop running."
Back at the railway station...
Claire continued reading.
Near the end of the file...
She found a folded medical report.
Unlike the others...
It had been handwritten.
The doctor's signature had been removed.
Only one paragraph remained legible.
Infant #37 demonstrates an extremely rare genetic marker matching the Voss maternal bloodline. Transfer approved under emergency protocol. Biological identity must remain permanently sealed.
Claire looked up.
"What does this mean?"
Samuel took the report carefully.
His expression slowly changed.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What?"
Samuel whispered,
"This isn't the original report."
"It was altered."
Claire frowned.
"Altered?"
Samuel pointed toward a line written in different ink.
"Someone changed your file."
"Why?"
"Because this report originally identified your biological father."
"Who was he?"
Samuel remained silent.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Samuel."
The old man's hands trembled.
"I buried this secret to save her."
Claire stood.
"No more."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"I deserve the truth."
Samuel's shoulders slowly slumped.
For twenty-three years...
He had carried this burden alone.
At last...
He opened a hidden envelope tucked inside the back cover.
One final document slid onto the table.
It was a DNA certificate.
Across the top appeared two names.
Child: Infant #37
Father: Classified
The bottom half of the page had been burned away.
Only a single sentence remained untouched by the fire.
Biological Father Confirmed...
The last line ended with a signature.
Not a name.
Just an initial.
A. V.
Samuel stared at the paper in horror.
Marcus felt a chill run down his spine.
Claire looked between them.
"What does A.V. stand for?"
Samuel slowly lifted his eyes.
His voice was barely audible.
"There was only one man..."
"...whose initials were A.V."
Claire waited.
Samuel's answer came like a whisper.
"Adrian Valen."
The room went completely silent.
Claire couldn't breathe.
Marcus couldn't speak.
Even Ethan stood frozen.
If the report was genuine...
Then the man who had spent twenty-three years hunting Claire...
Wasn't just her greatest enemy.
He was her biological father.
And somewhere inside his sprawling estate...
Adrian Valen looked into the camera feed and smiled.
"Now, my daughter..."
May you like
he whispered to himself.
"...it's finally time for us to meet."
