CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE VOICE

The world disappeared.
Claire knelt beside Sister Margaret's lifeless body, unable to hear the shouting around her.
Police officers rushed across the convent courtyard.
Firefighters battled the flames.
Paramedics pushed through the crowd.
None of it reached her.
She could hear only Margaret's final words.
"Trust... Eleanor... Ashford..."
And then...
The voice on the sniper's radio.
A woman's voice.
Familiar.
Painfully familiar.
Marcus pulled Claire behind an armored police vehicle as another shot echoed across the courtyard.
"Stay down!"
Claire barely reacted.
She kept staring at Margaret's hand, still curled around the empty silver chain.
"Claire!"
Marcus grabbed her shoulders.
"Look at me."
Slowly...
She met his eyes.
"I know that voice."
Marcus frowned.
"Whose?"
Claire closed her eyes.
Fragments of memories flashed through her mind.
A warm kitchen.
Freshly baked bread.
A woman humming an old lullaby.
A pair of gentle hands fixing her hair before school.
Then...
The same voice.
Soft.
Calm.
Loving.
She whispered a single name.
"Anna..."
Marcus looked confused.
"Anna who?"
"My nanny."
Ethan turned sharply.
"You had a nanny?"
Claire nodded slowly.
"After my father started traveling for work."
"She stayed with us for almost ten years."
Samuel's expression suddenly changed.
"What was her last name?"
Claire searched her memory.
"I..."
She frowned.
"I never knew."
"We all called her Anna."
Samuel stared into the distance.
"No..."
"What?"
"There was only one Anna Richard ever trusted."
Claire waited.
Samuel's face turned pale.
"Anna Sullivan."
Marcus immediately recognized the name.
"The former military intelligence officer?"
Samuel nodded.
"The same woman who disappeared eighteen years ago."
Claire blinked.
"She disappeared?"
Samuel looked at her sadly.
"That's what everyone believed."
Three hours later...
Back at the temporary police command center, Marcus replayed the intercepted sniper transmission dozens of times.
Each replay lasted only four seconds.
"The witness is dead."
"Good."
He isolated the female voice.
Enhanced it.
Removed background noise.
Then ran it through the national voice-recognition database.
The computer processed for nearly a minute.
Finally...
One match appeared.
Marcus froze.
"No..."
Ethan walked behind him.
"What is it?"
Marcus slowly turned the screen.
VOICE MATCH: 97.8%
ANNA SULLIVAN
Claire felt her knees weaken.
"It can't be."
Marcus wanted to disagree.
The computer didn't.
Meanwhile...
Twenty miles away...
A woman stood inside an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the sea.
She removed a blonde wig.
Then colored contact lenses.
Finally...
She wiped away expertly applied makeup.
The face beneath was older than Claire remembered.
A faint scar crossed her left cheek.
But the warm brown eyes remained exactly the same.
Anna Sullivan.
She looked at herself in the cracked mirror.
"So..."
she whispered.
"You finally recognized me."
Behind her...
Adrian Valen entered quietly.
"You missed."
Anna didn't turn around.
"I wasn't aiming at Claire."
"You were ordered to."
"I completed the mission."
"You killed Margaret."
Anna finally faced him.
"I never agreed to hurt Claire."
Valen smiled.
"You don't have a choice anymore."
Anna's expression hardened.
"I always have a choice."
For several seconds...
Neither of them moved.
Then Valen spoke softly.
"You've grown attached."
Anna laughed bitterly.
"I raised her."
"You watched her first steps."
"You held her when she cried."
"You taught her to read."
"You tucked her into bed every night."
His voice remained calm.
"Of course you're attached."
Anna looked away.
"I should've taken her and disappeared."
"You tried."
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
Valen stepped closer.
"I let you believe you escaped."
The room fell silent.
"You..."
Anna whispered.
"...you knew?"
"I knew everything."
He smiled.
"I always do."
Back at police headquarters...
Marcus requested Anna Sullivan's complete military file.
The results shocked everyone.
Former Special Intelligence operative.
Expert sniper.
Counter-surveillance specialist.
Languages: Seven.
Status:
Declared dead eighteen years earlier during an overseas mission.
Claire stared at the photograph.
"This is impossible."
Samuel sighed.
"Nothing about this war has ever been simple."
Marcus continued reading.
Then stopped abruptly.
"What?"
Ethan asked.
Marcus pointed to one line buried deep inside the report.
Emergency Guardian Assignment
Claire frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus looked up.
"It means..."
He swallowed.
"...Anna wasn't hired as your nanny."
"She was officially assigned to protect you."
"By whom?"
Marcus slowly read the authorization signature.
Everyone leaned closer.
The signature belonged to...
Eleanor Ashford.
Claire's mind went blank.
"Eleanor?"
Samuel nodded slowly.
"I wondered when we'd find that."
Claire looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"But why would Eleanor protect me?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Late that night...
Ethan returned alone to Ashford Manor.
The mansion was almost completely dark.
Only one light remained on.
His mother's study.
He entered without knocking.
Eleanor stood beside the window, watching the rain.
She didn't turn around.
"You've come for answers."
"Yes."
"You won't like them."
"I stopped expecting that."
She finally faced him.
Her elegant posture remained unchanged.
But the exhaustion in her eyes was impossible to hide.
Ethan placed Anna's military file on the desk.
"You assigned a military intelligence officer to protect Claire."
Eleanor looked at the file.
Then quietly nodded.
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because Richard asked me."
Ethan stared at her.
"What?"
"The night before he died."
"He came here."
"He begged me."
"'If anything happens to me,'"
she whispered, remembering every word,
"'Promise you'll keep Claire alive.'"
Ethan felt as though the room had tilted.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I don't expect anything."
She opened a locked drawer.
Inside lay an old cassette tape.
"I've listened to this every year for twenty-three years."
She handed it to Ethan.
"Now it's your turn."
An hour later...
Marcus managed to restore an old cassette player inside the command center.
Everyone gathered around.
The tape hissed.
Static filled the room.
Then...
Richard Bennett's voice emerged.
Weak.
Exhausted.
But unmistakable.
"If you're hearing this..."
"I'm already gone."
Claire closed her eyes.
Her father's voice hurt more than any wound.
Richard continued.
"People will blame Eleanor."
"Let them."
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
"She agreed to become the villain..."
"...because the real enemy needed someone else to hate."
Claire's breathing stopped.
Marcus looked at Samuel.
Samuel slowly lowered his head.
Richard's voice continued.
"Eleanor made terrible mistakes."
"She lied."
"She manipulated."
"She pushed people away."
"But she never betrayed Claire."
Tears rolled down Ethan's face.
He had spent days believing his own mother had become a murderer.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"If Claire ever learns the truth..."
"...tell her Eleanor Ashford has been protecting her..."
"...since the night she was born."
The tape ended with a burst of static.
No one spoke.
The silence lasted nearly a full minute.
Finally...
Claire whispered,
"If Eleanor protected me..."
She looked slowly around the room.
"...then who murdered my father?"
Before anyone could answer—
Marcus's secure laptop emitted a loud alert.
Someone had remotely uploaded a video.
No sender.
No traceable location.
The timestamp read:
Recorded 23 Years Ago
Marcus pressed play.
The grainy footage showed a hospital hallway.
A young Eleanor Ashford stood outside a nursery, arguing desperately with another woman.
Claire immediately recognized her.
Anna Sullivan.
The two women appeared terrified.
Suddenly...
The camera captured a third figure entering the hallway.
A tall man.
His face remained hidden.
But the silver cane in his hand reflected the corridor lights.
Both women instinctively stepped in front of the nursery door.
Protecting the babies inside.
Then the video ended abruptly.
Just before the screen went black...
The hidden man spoke one sentence.
A sentence that sent chills through everyone in the room.
"If I can't own the child... I'll erase her bloodline instead."
The video cut to black.
At the bottom of the screen, one final message slowly appeared.
TO BE CONTINUED...
Someone was still watching them.
Someone wanted them to see the past.
And for the first time...
Claire realized the truth wasn't buried.
May you like
It was being revealed...
One piece at a time.
