CHAPTER 13 — THE MAN WHO PLANNED EVERY MOVE

The final steel door slammed shut.
BOOM!
The sound echoed through the underground archive like a prison gate sealing forever.
Red emergency lights flickered overhead.
Then a cold mechanical voice filled the chamber.
"Containment Protocol Activated."
"Oxygen reserve: 179 minutes."
"Unauthorized access detected."
Claire looked around in disbelief.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus checked the heavy vault door.
"It means we're trapped."
He fired two rounds into the locking mechanism.
The bullets barely scratched the reinforced steel.
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I designed this vault."
Ethan turned sharply.
"You built it?"
Samuel nodded.
"Richard asked me to."
"Then you know how to get us out."
Samuel remained silent.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What aren't you telling us?"
Samuel slowly answered.
"There was never supposed to be a way out."
Silence.
Claire stared at him.
"What?"
"If someone entered this archive illegally..."
Samuel's voice grew heavy.
"...the room would seal permanently."
Miles away...
Adrian Valen watched everything unfold on a wall of surveillance monitors.
Victor Lang smiled.
"They're finished."
Valen calmly shook his head.
"No."
"They're exactly where I need them."
Victor frowned.
"You still want Claire alive?"
Valen leaned on his silver cane.
"Claire isn't the prize."
Victor looked confused.
"The archive is."
He pointed toward one monitor.
"Watch carefully."
On the screen, Claire unknowingly stepped toward the center of the vault.
Valen smiled.
"There it is."
Back inside...
Marcus organized everyone immediately.
"Count supplies."
Two officers checked their backpacks.
"Four bottles of water."
"One trauma kit."
"Three flashlights."
"Limited ammunition."
Samuel ignored them.
Instead, he slowly walked toward the center of the room.
Claire noticed.
"What is it?"
Samuel knelt beside the floor.
His fingers brushed away decades of dust.
Beneath it...
A bronze emblem appeared.
The Voss family crest.
Claire frowned.
"I thought this was Richard's archive."
Samuel smiled sadly.
"It was."
"But Richard never built anything without leaving me one secret."
He pressed both hands against the emblem.
Nothing happened.
He sighed.
"I was afraid of this."
Marcus stepped beside him.
"What?"
"The lock has changed."
Claire looked closer.
The crest wasn't complete.
Its center was empty.
A perfect circle.
Exactly the size of...
The Voss signet ring.
Claire instinctively looked at the platinum ring on her finger.
Samuel's eyes widened.
"No."
"What?"
"Richard actually did it."
"He made you the final key."
Claire hesitated.
"What if it's another trap?"
Samuel answered honestly.
"It probably is."
Marcus looked at Claire.
"The decision is yours."
For several seconds...
She simply stared at the ring.
Richard's final letter echoed in her mind.
The day you wear this ring... the last war will begin.
She slowly removed it.
The platinum felt strangely warm.
As if it had been waiting.
Claire placed it into the circular indentation.
A soft click echoed through the chamber.
Nothing happened.
Then...
The entire floor began to vibrate.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Hidden gears turned beneath the stone.
Everyone stepped back.
The bronze emblem slowly rotated.
A circular section of the floor descended like an elevator.
Revealing another room below.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"There's another archive."
Samuel whispered,
"No..."
"This isn't an archive."
"It's Richard's insurance policy."
The hidden chamber was surprisingly small.
Unlike the enormous vault above, it contained only a wooden desk.
One leather chair.
A safe.
And a portrait hanging on the wall.
Claire stopped breathing.
The portrait showed Richard Bennett standing beside Eleanor Ashford.
Both were smiling.
Between them stood a little girl.
About four years old.
Claire.
Ethan stared at the painting.
"My mother..."
Claire whispered,
"They knew each other."
Samuel nodded.
"They were friends."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"That can't be."
Samuel looked at him.
"They were once like brother and sister."
The revelation struck Ethan harder than anything before.
Everything he believed about his mother and Richard had been wrong.
Claire slowly approached the desk.
A single envelope rested on its surface.
Written in Richard's handwriting.
For Claire... only after you discover who your enemies truly are.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was another letter.
Richard's familiar handwriting filled the page.
My beautiful daughter,
If you've reached this room, then Samuel is still alive.
That means hope is alive too.
Claire smiled through tears.
Richard continued.
You have probably spent days chasing Adrian Valen.
You should.
But never forget one thing.
Valen isn't the man who started this war.
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
He already knew.
Richard's letter continued.
Valen believes he controls everything.
He doesn't.
There is someone even he fears.
The room became completely silent.
Ethan whispered,
"Impossible."
Richard continued.
Twenty-four years ago, twelve families formed the Council.
Eleven believed they served Valen.
They were wrong.
Valen served another man.
Claire's heart pounded.
Another man?
Richard had written one final sentence beneath it.
Find the man whose name was erased from every photograph.
Samuel's face turned pale.
"No..."
Marcus looked at him.
"You know who Richard meant."
Samuel slowly nodded.
"I prayed he never found out."
Ethan examined the portrait more carefully.
"Wait."
He stepped closer.
"There are scratches."
Claire looked.
The painting had been altered.
Someone had deliberately cut away a fourth figure standing beside Richard.
Only a torn sleeve remained.
Marcus removed the portrait from the wall.
Behind it...
Another photograph had been hidden.
Older.
Black and white.
It showed the twelve founders of the Council.
Eleven faces remained intact.
The twelfth had been burned away.
Only one handwritten sentence remained underneath.
History remembers the winners.
The dead remember the truth.
Samuel whispered,
"They erased him."
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
"The first Chairman."
"I thought Valen was the Chairman."
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"He became Chairman later."
"After the first one disappeared."
Marcus frowned.
"Disappeared?"
Samuel looked directly at Claire.
"No."
"He was murdered."
Suddenly—
One of Marcus's officers shouted.
"Detective!"
Everyone turned.
The officer pointed toward the projector.
Without electricity...
Without power...
It had turned on by itself.
A live video feed appeared.
Not a recording.
Live.
Adrian Valen sat comfortably inside his study.
He smiled as though greeting old friends.
"Good evening."
Marcus drew his pistol instinctively.
Valen laughed.
"You can't shoot a screen."
Claire stepped forward.
"You killed my father."
Valen nodded once.
"I did."
The admission stunned everyone.
"You finally admit it?"
"I've never denied it."
Claire's voice trembled with rage.
"Why?"
Valen looked almost disappointed.
"Because Richard refused to tell me where he hid the Ledger."
Samuel frowned.
"We already found the Ledger."
Valen smiled.
"No."
"You found a copy."
Silence.
Then he looked directly at Claire.
"Your father was much smarter than all of us."
"What do you mean?"
Valen leaned closer to the camera.
"He created two Ledgers."
"One to expose my crimes."
"And another..."
His smile widened.
"...to expose the real mastermind."
Marcus felt a chill run through his body.
"Who is it?"
Valen's smile slowly disappeared.
"I've spent twenty-three years searching for that second Ledger."
He pointed toward Claire through the screen.
"And Richard hid it..."
"...where only you could find it."
The transmission suddenly ended.
The screen went black.
At that exact moment, the safe in the hidden chamber emitted a loud metallic click.
Its door slowly swung open.
Inside rested a single leather-bound book.
Smaller than the first Ledger.
Darker.
Across the cover, embossed in faded gold, were four chilling words:
THE NAMES OF TRAITORS
Claire reached toward it with trembling hands.
Samuel grabbed her wrist.
"Don't."
"Why?"
His face was drained of all color.
"Because if Richard was right..."
He stared at the book as though it were alive.
"...everyone whose name is inside that Ledger..."
"...is still alive."
And somewhere beyond the sealed vault doors...
A hidden explosive timer quietly activated.
