CHAPTER 6 — THE LAST HEIR OF THE VOSS DYNASTY

Silence swallowed the forest.
Even the masked gunmen seemed stunned by the old man's words.
Claire stood frozen beneath the ancient oak tree, unable to breathe.
Her ears rang.
The pain in her ribs disappeared beneath the weight of a single sentence.
You were never born a Bennett.
You were the last surviving heir of the Voss Dynasty.
"No..."
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
"That's impossible."
The old man lowered his rifle but never took his eyes off the surrounding trees.
"I wish it were."
Ethan looked from Claire to the old man.
"My mother never mentioned a family called Voss."
The old man let out a bitter laugh.
"Of course she didn't."
"The Ashfords spent twenty-three years pretending the Voss family never existed."
Detective Hale stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The old man answered without hesitation.
"My name is Samuel Voss."
"The founder of Voss Holdings."
Ethan's face lost all color.
"Voss Holdings..."
Even after decades, everyone in the business world knew the name.
Before Ashford International became the country's largest corporation...
There had been Voss Holdings.
A business empire stretching across banking, shipping, construction, energy, and technology.
Then, twenty-three years ago, the company collapsed overnight.
The newspapers called it bankruptcy.
The government called it fraud.
History called it inevitable.
Samuel Voss looked Ethan directly in the eyes.
"Every one of those stories was a lie."
The masked gunmen had disappeared.
Not because they were afraid.
Because someone had ordered them to retreat.
Victor Lang, clutching his wounded hand, slowly backed toward the tree line.
"We'll meet again."
Samuel raised his rifle.
"Run."
Victor didn't hesitate.
Within seconds, the forest became silent once more.
Hale frowned.
"Why let them go?"
Samuel's expression hardened.
"Because Victor is nothing more than a messenger."
"You wanted the one giving the orders."
Samuel nodded.
"He was watching."
"Where?"
Samuel looked toward the sky.
"There."
Everyone followed his gaze.
A small drone disappeared into the clouds.
Samuel sighed.
"He knows you've found me."
Claire stepped closer.
"Grandpa..."
Samuel smiled sadly.
"You still remember calling me that."
Tears filled Claire's eyes.
"I thought you were dead."
"I had to let the world believe that."
"Why?"
"So they would stop looking for you."
Inside the Blue House...
Samuel carefully locked every door before leading them into the basement.
Unlike the abandoned rooms upstairs, the cellar was immaculate.
Maps covered one wall.
Dozens of computer monitors displayed surveillance feeds from across the city.
Stacks of files filled steel shelves.
Hale stared in disbelief.
"You've been investigating them."
"For twenty-three years."
"You built an intelligence network?"
Samuel nodded.
"I couldn't fight an empire with lawyers."
"So I built one with information."
Ethan slowly turned toward one monitor.
It displayed live footage from Ashford Manor.
Another showed the entrance to St. Gabriel Hospital.
Another...
Victor Lang's office.
"You've been watching everyone."
Samuel corrected him.
"No."
"I've been watching the people who murdered my family."
Claire stood before an old photograph pinned to the wall.
It showed a smiling young couple holding a baby.
Her breath caught.
"Is that..."
Samuel walked beside her.
"Your parents."
She touched the photograph with trembling fingers.
The man had Richard Bennett's kind eyes.
The woman wore the same silver necklace Claire had worn since childhood.
"They look..."
"So happy."
"They were."
"What were their names?"
Samuel took a deep breath.
"My son..."
He pointed toward the man.
"Alexander Voss."
Then toward the woman.
"And your mother..."
His voice broke.
"Victoria Hale Voss."
Detective Hale froze.
"My last name..."
Samuel slowly turned toward him.
"Your sister."
Marcus Hale stared as if the room had vanished.
"What?"
"Victoria was your older sister."
Hale's hands began to shake.
"No..."
"My sister died when I was fourteen."
Samuel nodded.
"She didn't die in a car accident."
Claire looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"Marcus..."
"You aren't just the detective investigating this case."
He swallowed hard.
"You're Claire's uncle."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Claire's knees gave way.
Marcus caught her before she hit the floor.
Neither of them spoke.
Neither knew what to say.
After twenty-three years...
The family they thought they had lost...
Had been standing beside each other all along.
An hour later...
Samuel placed a leather-bound ledger on the table.
"This."
He said quietly.
"Is what Richard died protecting."
Inside were handwritten records dating back twenty-five years.
Every illegal transaction.
Every bribe.
Every assassination.
Every missing child.
Every forged court order.
Every stolen company.
Each page ended with the same symbol.
A black letter V.
Hale frowned.
"This isn't Voss."
Samuel nodded.
"No."
"It stands for Valen."
Ethan had never heard the name.
"Who's Valen?"
Samuel's face darkened.
"The man who built an invisible empire."
"He owns nothing publicly."
"He signs nothing."
"He never appears in photographs."
"But every major corporation, criminal syndicate, and corrupt official eventually answers to him."
Claire whispered,
"The man with the silver cane..."
Samuel nodded.
"Victor Lang works for him."
"So does the Viper Syndicate."
"So do judges."
"So do senators."
"So did the people investigating your father's death."
Hale looked stunned.
"You mean..."
Samuel finished the sentence.
"The investigation was murdered long before Richard Bennett was."
Miles away...
Inside a private estate overlooking the sea...
An elderly man sat beside a fireplace.
His silver cane rested against the arm of his chair.
The black onyx ring glimmered beneath the flames.
A giant portrait hung above the mantel.
It depicted the founders of Voss Holdings.
One face had been carefully cut away.
The old man smiled as Victor entered.
"You failed."
Victor lowered his head.
"Samuel revealed the girl's identity."
The old man remained calm.
"I expected he would."
"Should we eliminate them?"
"No."
Victor looked surprised.
"Why not?"
"Because they're about to lead us somewhere much more valuable."
"The ledger?"
The old man laughed softly.
"No."
"The inheritance."
Victor frowned.
"I thought we already controlled everything."
The old man slowly stood.
"You still don't understand."
"There is one asset I have searched for during the last twenty-three years."
"What asset?"
The old man walked toward the portrait.
His fingers rested where the missing face had once been.
"The Voss Legacy."
Victor hesitated.
"Is it money?"
The old man smiled.
"Far more."
"It isn't hidden in a bank."
"It isn't gold."
"It isn't property."
"It is control."
"Control of what?"
The old man's eyes gleamed.
"Every company secretly founded by the Voss family."
Victor's heart raced.
"How much is it worth?"
The answer came quietly.
"Today..."
He looked out at the dark ocean.
"...approximately four hundred billion dollars."
Victor nearly lost his balance.
"Four hundred..."
"And only one person can legally claim it."
He picked up the silver cane.
"Claire Voss."
That night...
Back at the Blue House, Samuel unlocked one final safe hidden beneath the basement floor.
Inside lay a single velvet box.
Claire opened it carefully.
Nestled inside was an antique signet ring crafted from platinum.
The Voss family crest was engraved into its surface.
Alongside it rested a folded letter.
Samuel smiled faintly.
"Your father asked me to give you those..."
"...only when you finally learned who you truly are."
Claire unfolded the letter.
It contained only one sentence in Richard Bennett's familiar handwriting.
The day you wear this ring... the last war will begin.
As Claire slipped the ring onto her finger...
A tiny red light began blinking beneath the ring's inner band.
Samuel's expression instantly changed.
"No..."
Claire looked up.
"What?"
Samuel grabbed her hand.
His face turned pale.
"Take it off!"
"Why?"
"It's not just a ring."
"It has a tracker."
Before Claire could react...
Every monitor in the basement suddenly went black.
One by one.
Until only a single message remained glowing across every screen.
WELCOME HOME, CLAIRE VOSS.
Beneath the message...
Another line slowly appeared.
I'll see you before sunrise.
May you like
The message was signed with one name.
