CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The intensive care unit was eerily quiet.

The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor echoed through the dimly lit room, accompanied only by the soft hiss of the ventilator assisting Claire's breathing.

Outside the glass doors, two police officers stood guard.

Detective Marcus Hale had issued the order himself.

"No visitors except immediate family and authorized medical staff."

He wasn't taking any chances.

Not after the anonymous death threat Ethan had received.

Not after discovering that three security cameras overlooking the grand staircase had mysteriously stopped recording exactly ninety seconds before Claire fell.

Someone had planned this.

Someone powerful.

Claire drifted through darkness.

Fragments of memories surfaced like broken pieces of glass.

Rain.

A black limousine.

Her father arguing with someone.

"No," Richard Bennett shouted.

"You can't bury this forever."

Another voice answered calmly.

"You already signed the agreement."

"I'll expose every one of you."

"You won't live long enough."

A gunshot echoed.

Claire screamed.

Her eyes flew open.

She gasped violently, trying to sit up.

Pain exploded through her ribs.

Machines immediately began sounding alarms.

"Nurse!"

Doctors rushed into the room.

"Miss Bennett, don't move!"

"You're safe."

"No..."

Claire struggled to breathe.

"My father..."

"You're in the hospital."

"He's dead..."

"Please calm down."

Another voice entered the room.

"Everyone out."

Detective Hale stepped inside.

The medical team hesitated.

"Five minutes," he said.

"I'll be responsible."

The doctor reluctantly nodded before leaving.

The door closed.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Claire stared at Hale.

"You believed me."

"I believe someone wanted you dead."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I remember something."

Hale quietly took out a notebook.

"Tell me."

"My father..."

She swallowed painfully.

"...didn't die alone."

"What do you remember?"

"There was another man."

"Did you see his face?"

Claire closed her eyes.

Only fragments remained.

"I was twelve."

"My father thought I was asleep in the car."

"But I wasn't."

Her breathing became uneven.

"I heard them arguing."

"What were they arguing about?"

"My father kept saying..."

She forced herself to remember.

"...'The child belongs with her real family.'"

Hale stopped writing.

"What child?"

"I don't know."

"And the other man?"

Claire's hands began shaking.

"He said..."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"...'The Ashfords are only one piece of this empire.'"

Hale looked up sharply.

"Did he say anything else?"

Claire nodded.

"He called someone..."

She squeezed her eyes shut.

"...Chairman."

"Chairman who?"

"I don't know."

"And then..."

Her entire body trembled.

"...he shot my father."

Silence consumed the room.

Hale slowly closed his notebook.

"Claire..."

"What?"

"Officially..."

He spoke carefully.

"...your father's death was ruled a car accident."

"I know."

"But someone removed every forensic report from the archive two years later."

Claire stared at him.

"What?"

"I've been investigating your father's case for nearly eight months."

"You have?"

"I reopened it quietly."

"Why?"

Hale hesitated.

"Because another witness disappeared."

Across the city...

Eleanor Ashford stood inside her private study.

The morning newspapers lay untouched on her desk.

Every television station carried the same headline.

ASHFORD GALA ENDS IN VIOLENCE

HEIRESS FIGHTS FOR HER LIFE

POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTEMPTED MURDER

Her public relations director paced nervously.

"We need a statement."

"No."

"The media is waiting."

"They can wait."

"Mrs. Ashford..."

"Our legal team says surveillance footage may become public."

Eleanor remained silent.

Her assistant entered hurriedly.

"Ma'am."

"What now?"

"The detectives recovered forty-seven mobile phone videos from guests."

She closed her eyes.

"How many show the fall?"

"Most of them."

"And the push?"

The assistant lowered his head.

"...Several."

For the first time in decades...

Eleanor looked afraid.

Not because of prison.

Because she knew something else was coming.

Something much worse.

Meanwhile...

Ethan drove alone through the pouring rain.

Claire's bank locker receipt rested on the passenger seat.

He couldn't stop thinking about it.

Locker 117.

Why had she hidden it?

Why trust only Detective Hale?

He parked outside First National Trust Bank.

The manager recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Ashford."

"I need access to this locker."

The manager examined the receipt.

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

"It requires two people."

"What?"

"The owner..."

He looked at the authorization carefully.

"...and Detective Marcus Hale."

Ethan frowned.

Claire had planned this.

Weeks in advance.

Maybe months.

An hour later...

Hale arrived.

Neither man spoke until the steel vault door opened.

Locker 117 was surprisingly small.

Inside sat only three items.

A leather journal.

An old cassette tape.

And a sealed envelope marked in Claire's handwriting.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS... THEY TRIED TO KILL ME.

Ethan's heart pounded.

He opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Ethan,

If you're holding this letter, then everything happened exactly as I feared.

They won't stop until every person connected to my father is gone.

I don't know who can still be trusted.

But I know one thing.

My father left behind proof.

He hid it where only one person would think to look.

Find the Blue House.

Beneath the oak tree.

Whatever you discover there...

Don't tell anyone.

Especially if they wear the Ashford name.

Ethan lowered the letter slowly.

"My family..."

Claire truly believed someone in his family had murdered her father.

Hale picked up the leather journal.

The first several pages contained architectural sketches.

Financial records.

Construction contracts.

Nothing unusual.

Then he reached the middle.

Every page after that documented secret meetings.

Dates.

Names.

Payments.

Hidden offshore accounts.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Corporate executives.

Every entry ended with the same signature.

C.

Hale frowned.

"Who is C?"

Ethan looked at the final page.

Instead of writing...

There was a photograph.

A group of six people standing together twenty-three years earlier.

Richard Bennett.

A younger Eleanor Ashford.

Three unfamiliar men.

And one face that made Ethan's blood run cold.

"No..."

Hale looked up.

"What?"

Ethan pointed with trembling fingers.

"That's impossible."

The man smiling in the center of the photograph was officially declared dead in a private plane crash twenty-three years ago.

Yet there he stood.

Alive.

Standing beside Eleanor.

The back of the photograph contained one sentence written in Richard Bennett's handwriting.

The devil never died. He simply changed his name.

That evening...

Sophie Carter sat alone inside her tiny apartment.

The flash drive still rested on her kitchen table.

She had tried handing it to Detective Hale earlier.

But before she reached the police station...

Someone had begun following her.

She noticed the black SUV first.

Then the motorcycle.

Then the same man pretending to read a newspaper outside her apartment building.

She locked every door.

Closed every curtain.

Picked up the flash drive.

"What are you hiding?"

She whispered to herself.

Finally...

She inserted it into her old laptop.

The screen remained black for several seconds.

Then a single video file appeared.

RICHARD_BENNETT_FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4

Her finger hovered over the mouse.

She clicked.

Static filled the screen.

Then Richard Bennett appeared.

His face was bruised.

There was dried blood near his temple.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

He took a slow breath.

"...I'm already dead."

Sophie felt chills race down her spine.

Richard continued.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

"I have recorded everything."

"The murders."

"The stolen children."

"The money laundering."

"The judges they bribed."

"The politicians they own."

"And the man who controls them all."

Suddenly...

A loud crash came from the hallway outside Sophie's apartment.

Someone had kicked her front door.

Another violent impact.

The wood splintered.

A man's voice shouted from outside.

"Find the flash drive!"

Sophie's face turned white.

She grabbed her laptop and ran toward the back window.

The third kick shattered the door completely.

Heavy footsteps rushed inside.

As masked men flooded her apartment...

The video kept playing.

Richard Bennett looked straight into the camera and spoke one final sentence before the recording ended.

"His real name is..."

The screen went black.

The file had been corrupted.

May you like

And the one name that could expose the mastermind behind twenty-three years of murder...

Had vanished into silence.
