CHAPTER 4 — THE GIRL WHO ESCAPED WITH THE EVIDENCE

The apartment door exploded inward.

Wood splintered across the floor as three masked men stormed inside.

"Search every room!"

"Find the flash drive!"

"Don't let her escape!"

Sophie Carter didn't look back.

Barefoot, clutching her laptop tightly against her chest, she sprinted through the tiny apartment toward the fire escape.

Another crash echoed behind her.

One of the men had overturned the dining table.

"She's heading to the back!"

"Hurry!"

Sophie pushed open the narrow window and climbed onto the rain-soaked metal staircase.

Cold wind whipped against her face.

Four stories below, traffic moved through the storm.

There was nowhere to go but down.

She had barely reached the second landing when a hand grabbed her ankle.

"No!"

She kicked with every ounce of strength she had.

The masked man lost his grip and stumbled backward, crashing into the railing.

The rusted metal gave way.

He fell three stories before slamming onto the pavement below.

The remaining attackers froze.

For a split second.

That second was all Sophie needed.

She jumped onto the neighboring balcony and disappeared into the darkness.

At St. Gabriel Medical Center...

Claire stared at the ceiling of her hospital room.

She hadn't slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw her father's face.

Then the push.

Then the endless fall.

A gentle knock interrupted her thoughts.

Detective Marcus Hale entered carrying two paper cups of coffee.

"I brought one for myself."

Claire managed a faint smile.

"I was wondering."

Hale pulled up a chair.

"The hospital called me."

"What happened?"

"The maid."

"Sophie?"

"She's alive."

Claire exhaled in relief.

"But..."

Hale's expression darkened.

"...someone tried to kill her."

Claire's hands tightened around the blanket.

"They know."

"They know what?"

"She picked up the flash drive."

Hale nodded.

"We think so."

Claire slowly closed her eyes.

"They're moving faster than I expected."

"Who?"

Instead of answering, Claire looked toward the window.

"Hale..."

"Yes?"

"Have you ever wondered why powerful people fear ordinary people?"

He frowned.

"Why?"

"Because ordinary people witness extraordinary crimes."

Across town...

Sophie burst into a twenty-four-hour diner.

She was soaked from head to toe.

The elderly waitress gasped.

"Sweetheart..."

Sophie looked over her shoulder.

"They're following me."

Without asking another question, the waitress pointed toward the kitchen.

"Go."

"What?"

"My son owns this place."

"I can't involve—"

"Go!"

Sophie disappeared through the swinging doors just as a black SUV stopped outside.

Three men stepped out.

One of them showed a photograph to the waitress.

"Have you seen this girl?"

The woman glanced briefly at the picture.

Then shrugged.

"Never seen her."

The men searched the restaurant anyway.

Every booth.

Every restroom.

Every storage room.

Nothing.

Because beneath the kitchen...

Hidden behind an old freezer...

Was a narrow staircase leading into an abandoned wine cellar.

Sophie sat trembling in the darkness.

She looked down at the laptop still clutched in her hands.

The screen had cracked during her escape.

But it still worked.

She reopened Richard Bennett's video.

Frame by frame.

She watched his lips carefully.

The final sentence remained incomplete.

"His real name is..."

The recording froze.

Then something caught her eye.

For less than a second...

A reflection appeared in the window behind Richard.

Someone was standing there.

Not Richard.

Not the cameraman.

Another person.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Holding a silver cane with an eagle-shaped handle.

Sophie enlarged the image.

It became blurry.

But one detail remained unmistakable.

A signet ring.

Black onyx.

Engraved with the letter V.

Meanwhile...

Ethan returned to Ashford Manor for the first time since the gala.

The mansion felt colder than ever.

Portraits of his ancestors lined the grand hallway.

Every painting seemed to watch him.

His mother waited inside the library.

She hadn't touched the tea growing cold beside her.

"You finally came home."

Ethan remained standing.

"This isn't home anymore."

Pain flickered across Eleanor's face.

"So you've already judged me."

"I saw what happened."

"It wasn't what you think."

"You pushed her."

"I lost my temper."

"You nearly killed her."

Silence.

Then Eleanor stood.

"You have no idea what Claire brought into our lives."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Won't."

Her eyes filled with something Ethan had never seen before.

Fear.

"If you continue helping Claire..."

She spoke quietly.

"...you'll die."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Who is threatening us?"

Eleanor looked toward the closed curtains.

As if afraid someone might hear.

"Not threatening."

She whispered.

"Hunting."

Later that night...

Detective Hale requested the original security footage from Ashford Manor.

The forensic technicians restored every damaged file.

Most cameras had been disabled.

Except one.

A maintenance camera overlooking the east corridor.

The footage began thirty minutes before Claire arrived.

At first, nothing unusual.

Guests talking.

Servers carrying trays.

Musicians preparing.

Then...

A man wearing a maintenance uniform entered a restricted electrical room.

He wasn't on the staff list.

He opened the control panel.

Disconnected three surveillance systems.

Installed a tiny black device.

Then walked away.

Hale paused the video.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the image.

The man's face remained hidden beneath a cap.

But a tattoo peeked from beneath his sleeve.

A black serpent coiled around a dagger.

The same tattoo appeared in several organized crime investigations over the last decade.

Hale recognized it immediately.

"The Viper Syndicate."

The technician looked confused.

"I thought they disappeared years ago."

"So did everyone else."

Hale leaned closer.

"But someone just hired them."

At midnight...

Claire finally fell asleep.

She dreamed of her father again.

This time...

The memory continued further than ever before.

She was twelve years old.

Hidden beneath the back seat of his car.

Richard Bennett stopped beside an old blue wooden house on the outskirts of the city.

An elderly man waited beneath a massive oak tree.

Richard handed him a small metal box.

"If anything happens to me..."

The old man nodded.

"I'll protect it."

"No."

Richard looked toward the frightened little Claire hiding inside the car.

"You'll protect her."

Claire watched as the old man smiled sadly.

"I've waited twenty-three years."

"So have I."

Then Richard whispered something.

Just one sentence.

One name.

Claire jolted awake.

Her entire body shook violently.

She remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

She reached for the call button with trembling hands.

When Detective Hale arrived twenty minutes later, she looked directly into his eyes.

"The Blue House."

"You remembered?"

Claire nodded.

"I know who lives there."

"Who?"

She took a slow, painful breath.

"My grandfather."

Hale stared at her in disbelief.

"I thought your mother's parents died before you were born."

"So did I."

Claire's voice trembled.

"But my father lied."

"He hid my grandfather for twenty-three years."

"Why?"

Claire slowly looked toward the storm outside.

"Because my grandfather isn't just a witness."

A long silence filled the room.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"He's the last living founder of the Ashford Empire."

Outside the hospital...

A black luxury sedan had been parked across the street for over an hour.

Inside, an elderly man wearing black leather gloves watched Claire's hospital window through binoculars.

His silver cane rested beside him.

An eagle-shaped handle gleamed beneath the streetlights.

On his right hand...

A black onyx ring engraved with the letter V caught the light.

He smiled.

"So..."

he murmured softly,

May you like

"You finally remembered me."

Then the car disappeared into the rain before anyone noticed it had ever been there.
