CHAPTER 2 — THE FLASH DRIVE THAT COULD DESTROY AN EMPIRE

The shrill wail of ambulance sirens shattered the silence surrounding Ashford Manor.

Rain pounded relentlessly against the marble steps as paramedics rushed through the front entrance carrying emergency equipment.

Inside the ballroom, no one dared leave.

Security guards had locked every exit on Ethan Ashford's direct order.

Hundreds of guests stood frozen, their expensive gowns and tailored tuxedos suddenly meaningless in the face of what they had witnessed.

The annual charity gala had become a crime scene.

Claire lay on a stretcher surrounded by paramedics.

Blood stained her dark hair.

A neck brace immobilized her as oxygen flowed through a clear mask covering her face.

Her pulse was weak.

One medic checked the monitor.

"Blood pressure's dropping."

"We're losing her."

"Possible internal bleeding."

"Get another IV line in."

Claire drifted in and out of consciousness.

Voices blurred together.

Lights above her merged into streaks of white.

She could barely hear Ethan calling her name.

"Claire... stay with me."

His hand never left hers.

She squeezed his fingers with the little strength she had left.

"Ethan..."

"I'm here."

"You... can't trust..."

Her breathing hitched.

"...everyone..."

"What do you mean?"

Her eyes searched desperately for something.

Or someone.

Then they settled on the silver necklace resting against her chest.

With trembling fingers, she pulled it loose.

Inside the tiny heart-shaped locket was a folded piece of paper.

She pressed it into Ethan's palm.

"If... something happens..."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"...promise me."

"I promise."

"No matter... what they tell you..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...find the truth."

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Seconds later, it disappeared into the storm.

Back inside the mansion...

Detective Marcus Hale arrived with six officers from the Major Crimes Division.

Tall, calm, and impossible to intimidate, Hale had built his reputation by prosecuting powerful people no one else dared investigate.

He surveyed the ballroom quietly.

Broken champagne glasses.

Blood on the marble staircase.

Terrified witnesses.

And Eleanor Ashford standing perfectly composed near the balcony.

Too composed.

"Seal every camera recording."

He turned toward his officers.

"No one deletes a single file."

Eleanor approached before anyone else could speak.

"Detective Hale."

He nodded politely.

"Mrs. Ashford."

"This was a terrible accident."

"We'll determine that."

"The young woman slipped."

Several nearby guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Hale noticed immediately.

"Did she?"

Eleanor's expression never changed.

"The floor was wet."

"It hadn't started raining inside."

For the first time...

Neither of them spoke.

The detective broke the silence.

"I'll need everyone's statements."

"My attorneys—"

"Can wait."

His voice remained calm.

"So can yours."

Across the ballroom, Ethan watched everything unfold.

He no longer recognized his own mother.

His mind replayed the scene endlessly.

Her hands.

The shove.

Claire falling backward.

The sickening sound of her body striking the marble stairs.

He wanted to believe he had imagined it.

He couldn't.

His assistant approached carefully.

"Mr. Ashford..."

"What?"

"The board members are asking whether tomorrow's press conference should be canceled."

Ethan stared at him in disbelief.

"A woman may die tonight."

"Yes, sir."

"And they're worried about stock prices?"

The assistant lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

"So am I."

Meanwhile...

Hidden in a quiet service corridor...

Twenty-two-year-old maid Sophie Carter stared at the small flash drive in her trembling hand.

She had picked it up moments after Claire fell.

No one had noticed.

She glanced at the handwritten label once more.

OPEN ONLY IF I DIE.

Her heart raced.

Should she hand it to the police?

To Ethan?

Or keep it hidden?

Before she could decide...

A voice echoed behind her.

"What are you holding?"

Sophie spun around.

It was Eleanor's personal assistant, Victor Lang.

His sharp eyes immediately landed on the flash drive.

"What is that?"

"Nothing."

Victor stepped closer.

"Give it to me."

"It's... it's just something I found."

His smile disappeared.

"I wasn't asking."

Sophie's instincts screamed at her.

Run.

Instead, she slipped the drive into her apron pocket.

"It belongs to Miss Bennett."

Victor's face darkened.

"I said..."

He reached for her arm.

"...give it to me."

Before he could touch her—

A voice interrupted.

"Problem?"

Detective Hale appeared at the end of the hallway.

Victor immediately stepped back.

"No problem at all."

Hale looked from Victor to Sophie.

"Miss?"

She hesitated.

Then shook her head.

"No... everything's fine."

Victor forced another smile.

"Just a misunderstanding."

Hale didn't believe him.

Neither did Sophie.

As Victor walked away, he glanced back only once.

The message in his eyes was unmistakable.

You won't keep that for long.

At St. Gabriel Medical Center...

Doctors rushed Claire into emergency surgery.

Outside the operating room, Ethan sat alone.

His white shirt was stained with Claire's blood.

He hadn't noticed.

Or cared.

An elderly surgeon approached forty minutes later.

"Mr. Ashford?"

Ethan stood instantly.

"How is she?"

"She has severe internal injuries."

The doctor's expression was grave.

"A fractured pelvis. Three broken ribs. A collapsed lung. Significant blood loss."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"But..."

The doctor continued.

"...the head injury concerns us most."

"What are you saying?"

"There's swelling in her brain."

"Will she survive?"

A long silence followed.

"We're doing everything we can."

The surgeon walked away.

Those words offered no comfort.

Ethan finally remembered the small piece of paper Claire had hidden inside her necklace.

He unfolded it carefully.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a bank locker receipt.

Locker Number 117.

First National Trust Bank.

Along with four handwritten words.

Only trust Detective Hale.

Ethan frowned.

Why Hale?

Had Claire known she was in danger?

Had she expected tonight to happen?

Before he could think further, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?"

A distorted voice spoke quietly.

"You have exactly twenty-four hours."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

"Destroy everything Claire left behind."

"Who are you?"

"If you don't..."

The caller laughed softly.

"...the next funeral will be yours."

The line went dead.

Across the city...

Inside an abandoned warehouse...

Victor Lang entered through a rusted steel door.

Someone waited in the darkness.

Only a silhouette.

"You failed," the voice said.

"The girl survived."

"For now."

"And the flash drive?"

Victor lowered his head.

"A maid picked it up."

Silence.

Then...

"Find it."

"We're searching."

"No."

The mysterious figure stepped into a sliver of moonlight, though the face remained hidden.

"You don't understand."

The voice turned cold.

"If that flash drive reaches the police..."

A long pause filled the room.

"...the Ashford family won't be the only empire that falls."

Victor's eyes widened.

"You mean..."

"Yes."

The shadow turned away.

"It contains proof of what happened twenty-three years ago."

Victor swallowed hard.

"And if that secret is exposed..."

The answer came like a death sentence.

"Everyone involved dies."

Back at the hospital...

Claire remained unconscious.

Machines beeped steadily around her bed.

Outside the ICU window, lightning illuminated the city skyline.

No one noticed the slight movement of her fingers.

Or the single tear slipping down her cheek.

Because somewhere inside her unconscious mind...

She remembered the face of the man who had whispered to her father moments before he died.

It wasn't Eleanor Ashford.

It was someone far more powerful.

May you like

Someone the entire country believed had been dead...

For twenty-three years.
