CHAPTER 15 — THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

The silver cane clattered across the marble floor.

Adrian Valen didn't pick it up.

He simply stared at the security guard.

"The grave..."

he repeated quietly.

"...is empty?"

The guard swallowed.

"Yes, sir."

"We confirmed the DNA twenty-three years ago."

"You confirmed a body."

Valen's voice was calm again.

"You never confirmed the man."

Victor Lang rushed into the library.

"What happened?"

Valen looked toward the family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

For years, the empty space where one man's face had once been had never bothered him.

Tonight...

It terrified him.

"Prepare every safe house."

Victor frowned.

"Against who?"

Valen answered with a name he hadn't spoken aloud in decades.

"Jonathan Blackwood."

Victor's eyes widened.

"The First Chairman?"

"I watched him die."

Valen slowly picked up his cane.

"So did I."

Meanwhile...

Inside the underground archive...

The silence was overwhelming.

Claire couldn't stop thinking about the hooded man.

The ring.

The voice.

The impossible claim.

The First Chairman is coming home.

Marcus broke the silence first.

"Who is Jonathan Blackwood?"

Samuel remained motionless.

His eyes fixed on the dark projector screen.

"He wasn't supposed to exist anymore."

Claire knelt beside him.

"You knew him."

Samuel nodded.

"When I was twenty-five..."

"I thought he was the greatest man I'd ever met."

Twenty-eight years earlier...

Jonathan Blackwood had built an empire unlike any the country had ever seen.

He owned almost nothing publicly.

Yet he controlled ports...

Banks...

Energy companies...

Shipping routes...

Private intelligence networks...

Even governments quietly sought his approval before making economic decisions.

He believed wealth should protect nations.

Not own them.

That philosophy attracted brilliant people.

Richard Bennett.

Samuel Voss.

Victoria Hale.

Even a young Adrian Valen.

For years...

They worked together.

Until greed entered the room.

Valen wanted control.

Jonathan wanted balance.

The Council split in half.

And war became inevitable.

"What happened to him?"

Claire asked softly.

Samuel sighed.

"There was an explosion."

"Everyone believed Jonathan died."

"But you don't."

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"Because I never saw his body."

Marcus folded his arms.

"So someone faked his death."

Samuel looked at him.

"Or helped him disappear."

Suddenly—

Claire remembered something.

"The portrait."

"What portrait?"

"The one hidden beneath Richard's painting."

She opened the Second Ledger again.

Inside the back cover...

A folded photograph slipped onto the floor.

Marcus picked it up.

It showed twelve men standing together.

Unlike the burned version...

Every face was intact.

Claire immediately recognized Samuel.

A much younger Adrian Valen.

Richard Bennett.

Victoria Hale.

Then...

The man standing at the center.

Tall.

Silver-haired, even in his forties.

Sharp blue eyes.

An expression that radiated quiet authority.

Jonathan Blackwood.

Marcus turned the photograph over.

Someone had written a sentence in Richard's handwriting.

The man everyone followed... never wanted followers.

Ethan studied the photograph.

Then frowned.

"Wait."

He pointed toward the lower corner.

"Who's that?"

Almost hidden behind Jonathan stood a young woman holding several folders.

She wasn't part of the official picture.

She looked barely twenty years old.

Claire stared at the face.

Something felt familiar.

Samuel suddenly inhaled sharply.

"I know her."

Everyone looked at him.

"Who is she?"

He whispered one name.

"Vivian."

Marcus searched the archives.

"No last name?"

Samuel closed his eyes.

"I never knew it."

"But Jonathan trusted her with everything."

Claire kept staring at the photograph.

The woman's smile...

The shape of her eyes...

The curve of her face...

They reminded her of someone.

Then realization struck.

"Eleanor."

Everyone froze.

The woman looked almost identical to Eleanor Ashford.

Before anyone could speak—

The hidden elevator beneath the floor suddenly activated.

Metal gears groaned.

Marcus drew his pistol.

Everyone stepped back.

The elevator slowly rose.

When it stopped...

A single sealed metal case rested on the platform.

No one had been inside.

Only the case.

Claire approached carefully.

Attached to the handle was a tag.

For Claire.

No signature.

No date.

Samuel frowned.

"This wasn't here before."

Marcus checked for explosives.

Nothing.

He nodded.

"It's clean."

Claire opened the case.

Inside rested three objects.

A black leather passport.

A small brass compass.

And an old cassette tape.

The passport bore another name.

Claire Elise Marino.

Her original identity.

Issued twenty-three years ago.

Unused.

The compass had an unusual engraving.

Instead of north...

A tiny phoenix marked one direction.

Samuel smiled faintly.

"I've seen that before."

"Where?"

"Jonathan always carried one."

Claire picked up the cassette.

Written across the label were four words.

PLAY ONLY AFTER ESCAPE.

Marcus slipped it into his pocket.

"We'll wait."

The countdown continued.

01:09:44

Marcus examined the vault walls.

"There has to be another exit."

Samuel slowly walked toward the bookshelves.

Richard had once told him...

"Never trust a room with only one door."

He smiled.

"Richard."

His fingers brushed across hundreds of old files.

Then stopped.

One shelf didn't move like the others.

He pushed.

Nothing happened.

Claire noticed the brass compass still in her hand.

"The compass."

Samuel looked at it.

Then at the bookshelf.

A small circular indentation was hidden inside the wood.

Exactly the size of the compass.

Claire inserted it.

A loud click echoed through the chamber.

The entire bookshelf swung outward.

Behind it...

A narrow stone passage stretched into darkness.

Fresh air drifted through it.

Marcus smiled.

"We've got a way out."

Samuel laughed softly.

"I knew Richard wouldn't trap us."

As the group hurried into the tunnel...

Claire looked back one final time.

Richard's hidden room.

The desk.

The portrait.

The Ledger.

It felt as though she were leaving him behind again.

She whispered,

"Thank you, Dad."

Then followed the others.

Seconds later—

The vault doors sealed permanently.

The timer reached zero.

A violent explosion tore through the underground archive.

Concrete collapsed.

Steel beams twisted.

The entire chamber disappeared beneath thousands of tons of rubble.

Marcus looked back at the shockwave racing through the tunnel.

"If we'd stayed another minute..."

Samuel nodded.

"There would've been nothing left."

After nearly twenty minutes...

The tunnel opened into daylight.

The group emerged into a quiet valley surrounded by pine trees.

An abandoned stone chapel stood nearby.

Weathered.

Forgotten.

A single bell hung above its entrance.

Claire stepped outside and took her first full breath in hours.

"We made it."

Not everyone shared her relief.

Samuel stared at the chapel.

His expression changed.

"No..."

Marcus noticed immediately.

"What?"

Samuel pointed toward the wooden doors.

Carved into the ancient oak was the same black phoenix symbol they had seen on the mysterious ring.

Someone was here before them.

The chapel door slowly creaked open.

An elderly priest stepped outside.

His white robes fluttered in the wind.

He looked at Claire with gentle, knowing eyes.

Then he smiled.

"I've been waiting for you."

Claire hesitated.

"You know me?"

The priest nodded.

"I baptized you."

Silence fell over the valley.

Claire whispered,

"That's impossible."

"I was raised by Richard."

"Yes."

The priest smiled sadly.

"But before Richard..."

He reached into his robe and removed a faded photograph.

It showed a newborn baby in his arms.

Standing beside him...

Was Isabella Marino.

And the man holding her hand...

Gabriel Marino.

Claire's biological parents.

Tears filled her eyes.

The priest extended the photograph.

"Your mother asked me to give you this..."

"...when the war finally found you."

As Claire reached for it—

A black helicopter roared over the trees.

The wind exploded across the valley.

Armed men rappelled from the aircraft, surrounding the chapel in seconds.

Marcus raised his weapon.

"Everyone down!"

The leader removed his helmet.

It wasn't one of Valen's soldiers.

It was a woman.

Tall.

Composed.

Dressed in a black tactical uniform.

She lowered her rifle and looked directly at Claire.

Then she spoke the words that stopped everyone cold.

"My name is Vivian Blackwood."

May you like

She glanced at Samuel before looking back at Claire.

"And I'm your aunt."
