Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside the Family

Marcus Thorne had spent his entire life believing enemies came from outside.

Competitors.

Rivals.

People who wanted what his family had built.

That was how powerful families survived.

They built walls.

They hired security.

They protected their secrets.

But Marcus had learned the most dangerous enemies were not the ones standing at the gates.

They were the ones invited inside.

The ones who sat at the dinner table.

The ones who knew where every weakness was hidden.

The ones who smiled while holding the knife.

And now he knew one of them had been there all along.

The video played again.

Victor Hale stood inside a private room.

His face was clear.

His voice was calm.

"We have waited thirty years for this."

Then another voice answered.

"Then finish what Alexander started."

Marcus froze.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it countless times.

At family meetings.

At holiday dinners.

At company events.

A voice that represented loyalty.

Tradition.

The Thorne name.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

"No..."

Khloe looked at him.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

Because saying the name would make the betrayal real.

"Marcus."

He looked at her.

"The person behind all of this..."

His voice was quiet.

"...is my mother."

Margaret Thorne.

The woman who had raised him.

The woman who taught him how to survive in the world of billionaires.

The woman who always told him that emotions were dangerous.

For years, Marcus believed she was simply cold.

Strict.

A product of the environment she grew up in.

But now...

he wondered if he had misunderstood her completely.

Maybe she wasn't protecting the family.

Maybe she was protecting the secret.

The Thorne mansion had never felt so empty.

Marcus stood in the private study where his mother spent most evenings.

The room was exactly as he remembered.

Perfect.

Organized.

Nothing out of place.

That was Margaret.

Everything had a purpose.

Everything had a position.

Even people.

Especially people.

Daniel stood beside him.

"You are sure?"

Marcus looked at him.

"I know her voice."

Daniel sighed.

"I hoped I was wrong."

Marcus turned.

"You knew?"

Daniel looked away.

"Not everything."

"Then what did you know?"

A long silence followed.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

"Your mother knew about Elena."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"For how long?"

"Since before you met Khloe."

The answer hit harder than he expected.

"She knew?"

Daniel nodded.

"She knew Khloe existed."

Marcus walked toward the window.

The city stretched below him.

Millions of people.

Millions of lives.

And somehow his entire world had become a family secret.

"Why?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Because Margaret believed the Thorne empire belonged to your bloodline."

Marcus turned.

"And Khloe?"

Daniel looked at him.

"She believed Khloe was a threat."

Across town, Margaret Thorne sat in her private library.

She didn't look nervous.

She didn't look afraid.

She looked exactly the way she always looked.

Calm.

Controlled.

Victor stood across from her.

"The situation has changed."

Margaret poured tea into a porcelain cup.

"I know."

"Elena is alive."

"I know."

"Marcus has discovered the documents."

"I know."

Victor watched her carefully.

Most people would panic.

Margaret didn't.

That was what made her dangerous.

"You told me Marcus would never uncover the truth."

Margaret looked up.

"I underestimated my son."

A faint smile appeared.

"But that does not mean he has won."

Victor frowned.

"What is your next move?"

Margaret placed the cup down.

"The same move I should have made thirty years ago."

Victor waited.

"Remove the last obstacle."

At the hospital, Khloe struggled to process everything.

Her mother was alive.

Her family history was a lie.

Her husband’s grandfather had stolen from hers.

And now Marcus believed his own mother was involved.

It was too much.

She sat quietly while Marcus paced the room.

"Say something."

Marcus stopped.

"What?"

"You've been walking for twenty minutes."

He looked at her.

"I'm thinking."

"No."

Khloe shook her head.

"You're trying to carry everything alone again."

Marcus didn't deny it.

Because she was right.

Khloe reached for his hand.

"Marcus."

He sat beside her.

"What if your mother really did this?"

He looked down.

"I don't know."

That answer surprised her.

Because Marcus Thorne always knew.

Always had an answer.

Always had a plan.

But now he was facing the one enemy he couldn't easily defeat.

Family.

The next morning, every major financial network received breaking news.

THORNE GLOBAL FACES INTERNAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION

Marcus read the headline from his office.

His expression didn't change.

But his executives knew.

Something had gone very wrong.

"Sir."

His CFO entered.

"Several investors are requesting emergency meetings."

Marcus looked at the documents.

"What accusations?"

The executive hesitated.

"Misused family assets."

Marcus almost laughed.

Almost.

Because he understood immediately.

This wasn't random.

Someone was attacking the company's foundation.

"They want the board to remove me."

The CFO nodded.

Marcus leaned back.

"Who filed the complaint?"

The executive placed a document on the desk.

Marcus read the name.

His eyes narrowed.

Margaret Thorne.

His own mother.

An hour later, Marcus arrived at Margaret's mansion.

She was waiting for him.

No surprise.

No shock.

Almost as if she expected him.

"Hello, Marcus."

He stared at her.

"Why?"

Margaret remained calm.

"Because you are asking the wrong question."

"Then tell me the right one."

She looked at him.

"The right question is why your father lied to you."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Don't."

"Your father discovered the truth."

She walked closer.

"And instead of protecting this family, he chose a stranger."

"Khloe is not a stranger."

Margaret's eyes hardened.

"To you."

Silence.

"She entered your life and everything changed."

Marcus stared at her.

"You tried to destroy my wife."

"I tried to protect you."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You tried to protect yourself."

For the first time, Margaret's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Marcus noticed.

"You knew."

She said nothing.

"You knew who Khloe was."

Still silent.

"You knew my grandfather stole from her family."

Margaret looked away.

"Some truths destroy families."

Marcus stepped closer.

"No."

His voice lowered.

"Lies destroy families."

That night, Marcus returned to the hospital.

But before he reached Khloe's room, he received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No voice.

Only a recording.

A woman speaking.

His mother's voice.

But much younger.

A conversation from decades ago.

Marcus listened.

And then he heard something that made his entire body freeze.

Margaret speaking:

"Elena's daughter cannot survive."

A man's voice answered:

"What about the child?"

Margaret replied:

"The child is the problem."

Marcus stopped breathing.

Because the recording was not about money.

Not about inheritance.

Not about business.

It was about murder.

Someone had planned to erase Khloe before she was even born.

And the person who gave the order...

was his mother.

Marcus entered Khloe's room slowly.

She immediately saw his face.

"What happened?"

He sat beside her.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he whispered:

"Khloe..."

She looked at him.

"Your life was never an accident."

A tear formed in her eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus took her hand.

"It means someone tried to erase you before you ever had a chance to exist."

The room went silent.

Outside, the city continued moving.

People continued living.

But inside that hospital room...

the war had changed.

Because Marcus Thorne was no longer fighting to protect an empire.

He was fighting to protect the woman his family had tried to erase.

And now he knew the most terrifying truth.

May you like

The person who wanted Khloe gone...

was the person who raised him.
