Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Mask

The rain started before midnight.

By the time Marcus Thorne left the hospital suite, the city outside had transformed into a blur of silver streets and glowing skyscrapers.

Normally, Marcus loved storms.

Rain meant the world slowed down.

It meant fewer meetings.

Fewer distractions.

Fewer people pretending they understood him.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, every drop hitting the window of the hospital corridor sounded like a countdown.

Because someone had tried to destroy his family.

And they had almost succeeded.

Marcus stood outside the emergency examination room where Khloe was being treated.

Through the glass window, he could see doctors moving around her.

Checking the baby.

Checking her condition.

Checking whether the attack had caused damage.

Every few seconds, Marcus looked toward the room.

Every few seconds, he felt the same fear return.

The fear that he might lose the woman who had changed his entire life.

Before Khloe, Marcus Thorne had believed love was a weakness.

A distraction.

Something that made powerful people vulnerable.

His father had taught him that.

"Never give anyone enough power to hurt you."

Those were the words Thomas Thorne repeated his entire childhood.

And Marcus listened.

He built walls.

He became colder.

Smarter.

More ruthless.

Then Khloe walked into his life.

She didn't care about his money.

She didn't care about the private jets, the penthouses, or the company empire.

The first time they met, she had spilled coffee on his expensive suit.

Then she had looked at him and said:

"You're staring at your ruined jacket like it matters more than the person standing in front of you."

Nobody talked to Marcus like that.

Nobody.

But Khloe did.

And somehow...

he loved her for it.

A doctor finally stepped out.

Marcus immediately turned.

"How is she?"

The doctor removed his glasses.

"Your wife is stable."

Marcus released a breath he didn't realize he was holding.

"And the baby?"

"The baby is okay."

For the first time that night, Marcus closed his eyes.

Relief.

Pure relief.

"But..."

The word stopped him.

Marcus opened his eyes.

"But what?"

The doctor looked serious.

"She experienced significant trauma. Physically and emotionally."

Marcus looked through the glass again.

"Will she be okay?"

The doctor hesitated.

"She needs rest. She needs to avoid stress."

Marcus nodded slowly.

Then his expression hardened.

"She won't be dealing with this alone."

The doctor understood.

Everyone understood.

Marcus Thorne was a man who protected what belonged to him.

But this time...

it wasn't about ownership.

It was about family.

Across the city, Isabella Rossi sat inside the back seat of a black luxury car.

She had stopped crying.

The moment the hospital doors closed behind her, the tears disappeared.

Her face returned to normal.

Calm.

Controlled.

Beautiful.

The driver looked at her through the mirror.

"Are you sure nobody followed you?"

Isabella stared out the window.

"No."

"You are certain?"

She smiled slightly.

"Marcus was too emotional."

The driver said nothing.

Because everyone who worked for Isabella knew one thing.

Her greatest weapon was not money.

Not influence.

Not beauty.

It was her ability to make people underestimate her.

"Did you get the footage?"

Isabella asked.

The driver tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"We tried."

"Tried?"

Her voice became colder.

"The hospital system was harder to access than expected."

Isabella turned toward him.

"You said it would be handled."

"It was."

"Then why does Marcus know?"

The driver stayed silent.

That silence annoyed her.

"Answer me."

"Because someone arrived before we could finish."

"Who?"

The driver looked uncomfortable.

"Your problem."

Isabella's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"He wasn't supposed to be there."

"Who?"

The driver finally spoke.

"Daniel Thorne."

The name changed everything.

Isabella's expression shifted.

For the first time that night, she looked genuinely concerned.

Daniel Thorne.

Marcus's uncle.

Former head of security for the Thorne family.

A man who had spent thirty years protecting the family empire.

A man who noticed everything.

"Why was he there?"

The driver shrugged.

"Apparently he was visiting the hospital."

Isabella leaned back.

Impossible.

She knew the Thorne family.

Daniel didn't move without a reason.

Nothing about him was accidental.

"Find out what he saw."

The driver nodded.

"And Isabella..."

She looked up.

"What?"

"You should leave the city."

A small smile appeared on her lips.

"Because you think I lost?"

The driver didn't answer.

Isabella looked at her reflection in the dark window.

The woman staring back was flawless.

Elegant.

Powerful.

But behind the beauty was something much darker.

"I didn't lose."

Her voice was almost a whisper.

"Marcus doesn't know the truth yet."

She touched the diamond necklace around her neck.

A necklace Marcus had given her years ago.

Before Khloe.

Before the marriage.

Before everything changed.

"He still thinks this is about jealousy."

She smiled.

"That's exactly what I wanted."

At 2:17 a.m., Marcus entered Khloe's hospital room.

The lights were dim.

The machines around her made quiet sounds.

Khloe was awake.

Her eyes moved toward him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Marcus walked closer.

"I'm sorry."

Khloe frowned.

"For what?"

"For bringing you into this."

Her expression softened.

"Marcus..."

"I should have seen it."

He looked away.

"I should have known."

Khloe reached for his hand.

"You can't predict what someone else chooses to do."

"But I can protect you."

Her eyes became sad.

"Marcus, this isn't about protection anymore."

He looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Khloe took a slow breath.

"She wasn't angry tonight."

Marcus stayed silent.

"Angry people lose control."

Khloe's voice lowered.

"Isabella was calm."

A chill moved through him.

"She knew exactly what she was doing."

Marcus looked toward the window.

The city lights reflected across his face.

"You're right."

Khloe squeezed his hand.

"Marcus."

"What?"

"Before she attacked me..."

Khloe hesitated.

"She said something."

His eyes immediately returned to her.

"What?"

Khloe swallowed.

"She said I was supposed to know my place."

Marcus's expression changed.

"Anything else?"

Khloe looked uncomfortable.

"She said..."

She paused.

"She said I was only there to give you an heir."

The room became silent.

Because those words were not random.

They sounded planned.

Like someone had been feeding Isabella information.

Information about the marriage.

Information about their family.

Information about Marcus himself.

Then Marcus's phone vibrated.

He looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WRONG WOMAN.

Marcus stared.

Another message appeared.

ISABELLA WAS NEVER THE REAL THREAT.

Khloe noticed his expression.

"What is it?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Because another message arrived.

This time with an attachment.

A photo.

Marcus opened it.

And his entire body went still.

The image showed Isabella meeting someone three days earlier.

Someone Marcus recognized instantly.

Someone who should have been impossible.

Because that person was supposed to be on Marcus's side.

His closest advisor.

His family's trusted attorney.

The man who handled every secret in the Thorne empire.

Marcus whispered one name.

"No..."

Khloe looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

His face had changed.

The billionaire.

The businessman.

The man who feared nothing.

For the first time in years...

looked afraid.

Because the person standing behind Isabella wasn't trying to destroy his marriage.

May you like

They were trying to destroy everything Marcus had built.

And they were already inside the walls of his empire.
