Chapter 16: The Woman Who Wanted the Crown

The world learned Khloe Thorne’s name overnight.

Not as the billionaire’s wife.

Not as the woman attacked inside a hospital suite.

Not as the quiet woman who stood beside Marcus through years of public pressure.

The world learned her as something far more dangerous.

The rightful heir.

Every major news channel repeated the same story.

Every financial analyst discussed the same question.

Every investor wondered the same thing.

If Khloe Marquez was the true heir to the original fortune...

what happened to everything the Thorne family built?

And more importantly...

who had known the truth all along?

Inside the Thorne Tower, chaos had replaced control.

Executives argued.

Lawyers demanded answers.

The board scheduled emergency meetings.

For decades, the Thorne empire had been untouchable.

Now it was being questioned by the one person nobody expected.

The woman they tried to erase.

Marcus stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

The same view he had admired his entire life.

But today it looked different.

The buildings.

The streets.

The empire.

Everything looked like a monument built on a secret.

Daniel entered the office.

"They are calling for your resignation."

Marcus didn't turn.

"Who?"

"The board."

Marcus almost smiled.

"The same people who protected my family for thirty years?"

Daniel nodded.

"They believe the company can survive if you step away."

Marcus finally turned.

"And do they believe Khloe should receive what was stolen from her?"

Daniel didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Across the city, Margaret Thorne watched the news.

She watched Khloe's face appear on every screen.

The daughter of Elena Marquez.

The missing heir.

The woman who destroyed decades of carefully constructed lies.

But Margaret did not look angry.

She looked disappointed.

Almost like a mother watching a child make a mistake.

Her phone rang.

Victor.

She answered.

"You saw the news."

"Yes."

"The world knows."

A pause.

Then Margaret said:

"Good."

Victor frowned.

"Good?"

"Yes."

He looked confused.

"I thought the goal was to stop Khloe."

Margaret walked toward the window.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"The goal was never to stop Khloe."

"Then what was the goal?"

Margaret looked at the city.

"To make her powerful."

Victor became silent.

Because he finally understood.

For thirty years, Margaret had not feared Khloe because she was weak.

She feared her because she was powerful.

Not because of money.

Because of legitimacy.

Khloe was the one person who could legally challenge the entire foundation of the Thorne empire.

But Margaret had discovered something long ago.

A person with power could be controlled.

A person with power could be manipulated.

A person with power could be turned into an ally.

And that was the plan.

Not to destroy Khloe.

To own her.

Thirty years earlier.

After Elena disappeared, Margaret searched for Khloe.

She could have ended everything.

She could have erased the child Alexander feared.

But she didn't.

Because she saw something Alexander never understood.

The future.

The Thorne empire was aging.

The old bloodline was weakening.

The family needed a successor.

Someone with a legitimate claim.

Someone the world would accept.

Khloe was not a threat.

She was the solution.

But only if Margaret controlled her.

At the hospital, Khloe sat with Elena.

The world outside had become louder.

But inside the room, everything was quiet.

"I don't know who I am anymore."

Elena looked at her daughter.

"You are still you."

Khloe shook her head.

"My whole life was built on missing pieces."

Elena reached for her hand.

"Your kindness was real."

"Your choices were real."

"Your love was real."

Khloe looked at her.

"Was Marcus real?"

Elena smiled sadly.

"That is the one thing nobody could fake."

Khloe looked away.

Because Marcus had been the only person who stayed when the truth became ugly.

Meanwhile, Adrian stood alone outside the hospital.

He had heard everything.

The news.

The documents.

The accusations.

For years, he believed the Thorne family was responsible for every pain in his life.

And part of him still believed that.

But now everything was changing.

Because the man who saved Khloe...

was also the man who tried to save him.

Thomas.

His entire life had been built around hatred.

But hatred was becoming harder to hold.

His phone rang.

Victor.

Adrian answered.

"What?"

Victor's voice was cold.

"You need to leave."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Marcus knows."

"Knows what?"

"Everything."

A pause.

Then Victor continued:

"He knows you worked with me."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I never betrayed Khloe."

"No."

Victor replied.

"You betrayed Marcus."

Silence.

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

"I don't care about Marcus."

Victor laughed quietly.

"You should."

"Why?"

"Because Marcus is the only person standing between you and the truth."

Adrian froze.

"What truth?"

Victor said nothing for a moment.

Then:

"Ask your mother why she never told you who your real father was."

The call ended.

That evening, Marcus finally confronted Margaret again.

This time, he didn't come as her son.

He came as the person who knew the truth.

"You wanted to control Khloe."

Margaret remained silent.

"You never wanted her gone."

Still silent.

"You wanted the empire to belong to someone you could influence."

Margaret looked at him.

"And what is wrong with that?"

The answer shocked him.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she truly believed it.

"What is wrong with that?"

She stood.

"Marcus, do you know how many people would destroy this family if they had the chance?"

"You became one of them."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"I protected it."

"By destroying people?"

"By making sacrifices."

Marcus stared at her.

"That is what everyone in this family says before they ruin someone else's life."

For the first time, Margaret looked tired.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Just tired.

"You think I wanted this?"

Marcus didn't answer.

She continued.

"I watched Alexander destroy everything."

"Then why continue?"

Her eyes filled slightly.

"Because I thought I could fix it."

A sudden alarm interrupted them.

Marcus's phone rang.

Emergency.

The hospital.

His expression changed instantly.

"What happened?"

The security officer's voice was urgent.

"Mr. Thorne..."

Marcus already knew.

"Khloe?"

A pause.

"She's safe."

He exhaled.

"Then what?"

The officer hesitated.

"It's Elena."

Marcus froze.

"What about her?"

"Someone tried to take her."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"Did you catch them?"

Another pause.

"No."

Marcus looked at Margaret.

Then at the city outside.

Someone was still moving.

Someone was still controlling the game.

And now they were targeting the one person who could reveal everything.

When Marcus arrived at the hospital, he found Elena unconscious but alive.

Khloe sat beside her.

Crying.

Marcus immediately went to her.

"What happened?"

Khloe looked at him.

"She received a message."

"What message?"

Khloe handed him the phone.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

YOU HAVE ALWAYS PROTECTED THE WRONG DAUGHTER.

Marcus frowned.

Wrong daughter?

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A picture of a young Elena holding two babies.

Khloe.

Adrian.

But behind them stood someone unexpected.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone Marcus knew.

The person holding the camera was:

Margaret Thorne.

Marcus stared at the image.

His entire understanding collapsed again.

Because Margaret wasn't just involved.

She had been there from the beginning.

She had seen the children.

She had known everything.

But the most terrifying part was not the photograph.

It was the date.

The picture was taken after Margaret claimed she first discovered Khloe existed.

Meaning she had lied.

For thirty years.

Later that night, Marcus returned to Margaret.

He placed the photograph on the table.

She looked at it.

And for the first time...

she had no excuse.

"No more lies."

Margaret looked at him.

"Do you really want the truth?"

Marcus didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

She took a slow breath.

Then whispered:

"Then you need to know what happened the night Richard Marquez disappeared."

A pause.

"Because I was there."

Marcus froze.

"And I wasn't the one who saved him."

May you like

Another pause.

"I was the one who watched him die."
