Chapter 17: The Night Richard Marquez Died

For thirty years, Margaret Thorne had carried the same memory.
The same night.
The same sound.
The same choice.
She had convinced herself that silence was protection.
That secrecy was survival.
That every sacrifice had been necessary.
But standing across from Marcus now...
she finally understood something.
The past did not disappear.
It waited.
And eventually, it came back to collect everything.
Marcus stared at his mother.
The photograph sat between them.
A young Elena.
Two babies.
And Margaret standing behind them.
A witness.
Not a stranger.
Not someone who discovered the truth later.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
"You were there."
Margaret didn't deny it.
"Yes."
Marcus's voice became quieter.
"The night Richard disappeared."
She looked away.
"Yes."
"Tell me everything."
Margaret closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked older than Marcus had ever seen her.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a woman carrying thirty years of guilt.
Thirty years earlier.
Richard Marquez arrived at a private meeting believing he was finally going to expose Alexander Thorne.
He had evidence.
Documents.
Financial records.
Proof that could destroy everything Alexander built.
He believed truth would win.
He believed justice would matter.
But he underestimated one thing.
How far powerful people would go to protect their secrets.
Alexander was waiting.
So was Margaret.
And so was someone else.
Someone Richard never expected.
"Why were you there?"
Marcus asked.
Margaret looked at him.
"Because Alexander wanted me to learn."
"Learn what?"
"How the world really worked."
Her voice became bitter.
"He wanted me to understand that power was not about being right."
A pause.
"It was about being the last person standing."
Marcus felt disgust.
"You watched him destroy people."
Margaret looked down.
"Yes."
"You helped him."
Silence.
Then:
"Yes."
The answer hurt more because she didn't fight it.
Richard Marquez entered the room carrying a briefcase.
Inside were years of investigation.
Evidence that Alexander had stolen companies.
Manipulated contracts.
Destroyed families.
But Richard had one more discovery.
Something Alexander feared more than the documents.
Richard knew about Elena.
He knew about Khloe.
He knew Alexander had created a false empire using stolen wealth.
And he knew the rightful heirs were still alive.
Alexander could not allow that.
"Your grandfather believed the Thorne name was more important than any person."
Margaret whispered.
"He believed history belonged to whoever controlled it."
Marcus looked at her.
"And you believed him."
A painful silence.
"At the time..."
She stopped.
"Yes."
Richard refused to surrender the evidence.
He threatened to go public.
So Alexander made a decision.
The evidence would disappear.
Richard would disappear.
And the world would move on.
But something unexpected happened.
Margaret hesitated.
For the first time, she questioned Alexander.
Because Richard reminded her of someone.
Thomas.
A person who believed doing the right thing mattered more than winning.
And that scared her.
Because she realized something.
The Thorne family wasn't protecting itself.
It was becoming the thing everyone feared.
"What happened that night?"
Marcus asked.
Margaret looked at him.
"Richard escaped."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
"He escaped the meeting."
"But everyone said he died."
Margaret nodded.
"Because Alexander made sure people believed that."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Then how did he die?"
Margaret looked away.
"I don't know."
The answer surprised him.
"You don't know?"
"No."
Her voice lowered.
"Because I left."
Marcus stared.
"You left him?"
A tear appeared in her eyes.
"Yes."
After Richard escaped, Margaret followed him.
Not to stop him.
To warn him.
She found him near an abandoned road outside the city.
He was injured.
Terrified.
But alive.
"He told me something."
Marcus waited.
"He told me he had hidden copies of everything."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then what?"
Margaret looked at him.
"He gave me a message."
"What message?"
She whispered:
"He said if he couldn't survive, his daughter would."
Marcus felt cold.
"Khloe."
Margaret nodded.
"He knew she was the key."
"But you still let everyone believe he died."
Margaret looked destroyed.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid."
The answer surprised Marcus.
Not because it was unexpected.
Because it was human.
For the first time, he saw the woman beneath the armor.
"I thought Alexander would destroy everyone."
A pause.
"I thought if I stayed silent, I could protect someone."
Marcus looked at her.
"Who?"
Margaret's eyes filled.
"You."
The room became silent.
Marcus had expected excuses.
Manipulation.
Denial.
But he found something else.
Regret.
A lifetime of it.
"You destroyed my family."
Margaret nodded.
"I know."
"You almost destroyed Khloe."
"I know."
"You tried to control her."
"I know."
Marcus looked away.
"Then why tell me now?"
Margaret answered quietly.
"Because the person who killed Richard is still alive."
Marcus turned.
"What?"
Margaret looked at him.
"I thought Alexander was the worst person in this story."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
At the same time, Adrian met Victor in secret.
He arrived angry.
"You knew."
Victor looked at him.
"Knew what?"
"About Richard."
Victor stayed silent.
Adrian stepped closer.
"You knew my father wasn't the enemy."
Victor's expression changed.
Slowly.
"You are finally understanding."
Adrian's anger grew.
"You used me."
Victor didn't deny it.
"I gave you purpose."
"You gave me hatred."
Victor looked at him.
"Hatred kept you alive."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
His voice broke.
"It kept me trapped."
Victor smiled sadly.
"Do you know why I chose you?"
Adrian said nothing.
"Because you were the only one who could destroy Marcus."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus trusts family."
A pause.
"And you were the perfect weapon."
Adrian looked disgusted.
"I am not a weapon."
Victor stared at him.
"Then prove it."
Meanwhile, Thomas Reed uncovered something hidden in Richard's old files.
A final message.
A recording.
Richard's voice.
"If anyone finds this..."
The voice was weak.
Tired.
"But my daughter is alive..."
Everyone in the room froze.
Khloe stood beside Marcus.
Richard continued.
"Do not let the Thorne family decide her future."
A pause.
"Not even the ones who believe they are protecting her."
Marcus looked at Margaret.
Then the recording continued.
"Because the person responsible for everything..."
Static interrupted.
The audio distorted.
Then one final sentence came through.
The sentence that changed everything.
"The betrayal came from inside the Marquez family."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Khloe looked confused.
"My family?"
Marcus stared at the device.
Another secret.
Another hidden enemy.
Another betrayal.
That night, Marcus returned to the office alone.
He opened every file connected to Richard.
Every document.
Every photograph.
Every hidden record.
Until he found something.
A name.
A person who had appeared repeatedly.
Someone connected to Richard.
Someone connected to Elena.
Someone connected to Alexander.
Someone nobody had questioned.
Because everyone believed they were a victim.
Marcus stared at the name.
His face slowly changed.
"No..."
Because the final enemy wasn't a Thorne.
It wasn't Victor.
It wasn't Margaret.
It wasn't even Alexander.

The person who started the entire war...
was someone from Khloe's own bloodline.
