Chapter 4: The Hidden Heir

Marcus Thorne had faced hostile CEOs.
He had survived betrayal from business partners.
He had watched competitors spend millions trying to destroy his reputation.
But nothing had prepared him for one simple sentence.
Khloe Thorne is the rightful heir to the empire you think belongs to you.
The words remained in his mind long after he left the old family estate.
He sat in the back of his car as the city moved past the windows.
Normally, Marcus would already have a plan.
A strategy.
A response.
That was how he survived.
He analyzed.
He calculated.
He controlled.
But now every calculation led to the same impossible question.
Who was Khloe really?
And why had his father hidden the truth from everyone?
Especially from him?
His wife.
The woman he loved.
The woman carrying his child.
Had she unknowingly been connected to his family empire all along?
When Marcus returned to the hospital, the sun was beginning to rise.
The city looked peaceful.
Almost innocent.
But Marcus knew better.
Peace was often just the moment before everything collapsed.
He entered Khloe’s room quietly.
She was awake.
Her eyes immediately found his.
"You look different."
Marcus stopped.
"What?"
Khloe studied him.
"Something happened."
He tried to hide it.
He failed.
Khloe had always been able to see through him.
"Marcus."
He walked closer.
Then sat beside her.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Finally, he reached into his coat and placed the old photograph on the table.
Khloe looked at it.
Her face changed.
"What is this?"
"My father kept it."
She picked it up carefully.
The photo showed her.
But younger.
Standing beside an older woman.
A woman Khloe didn't recognize.
"I've never seen this before."
Marcus watched her reaction.
And he knew.
She wasn't pretending.
She truly didn't know.
"Who is she?"
Khloe shook her head.
"I don't know."
Marcus leaned forward.
"My father was investigating your past."
Her expression tightened.
"Why?"
"That's what I'm trying to find out."
Khloe looked at him.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Marcus looked away.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
"Your identity may be connected to my family."
Silence.
Khloe stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus took a breath.
"It means there is a possibility..."
He paused.
"...that you are not just my wife."
Her eyes narrowed.
"What are you saying?"
"That you may have a claim to the Thorne empire."
For several moments, Khloe said nothing.
Then she laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"Marcus."
Her voice shook.
"I grew up in a small apartment with my mother."
"I know."
"My mother worked three jobs."
"I know."
"We struggled."
"I know."
She looked at him.
"So explain to me how I could secretly be some kind of heir."
Marcus didn't answer.
Because he couldn't.
Not yet.
Three floors below, Victor Hale entered the hospital.
He wore a dark suit.
Carried a leather briefcase.
And walked with the confidence of a man who believed he still controlled the situation.
He approached the security desk.
"I'm here to see Mr. Thorne."
The receptionist checked the system.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Hale."
"Sorry?"
"The building security has restricted access."
Victor smiled.
A calm, professional smile.
The kind that convinced judges.
Investors.
Executives.
"I have worked with the Thorne family for fifteen years."
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, sir."
Victor stared at her.
Then quietly said:
"People often forget."
He leaned closer.
"The Thorne family survived because people like me cleaned up their problems."
The receptionist said nothing.
Victor walked away.
His smile disappeared.
Because for the first time in fifteen years...
someone had locked him out.
Inside the hospital room, Marcus received a call.
Daniel.
He answered immediately.
"What did you find?"
Daniel's voice was tense.
"Victor accessed the family archives six months ago."
Marcus froze.
"Six months?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know."
Marcus stood.
"Someone erased the records."
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
"Marcus."
"What?"
"There is something else."
Marcus waited.
"Your father wasn't trying to hide Khloe from you."
"Then what was he doing?"
"He was protecting her."
Marcus looked toward Khloe.
"From who?"
Daniel's answer came slowly.
"From your grandfather."
The room went silent.
Marcus felt a chill.
"My grandfather died twenty years ago."
"Yes."
"Then how?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Because the person who created this entire situation..."
"...is someone who was supposed to be gone."
Across the city, Isabella entered a private meeting room.
Victor was already there.
She immediately noticed his expression.
"You look worried."
Victor ignored the comment.
"Marcus knows."
Isabella froze.
"Knows what?"
"That Khloe may be the heir."
For the first time, Isabella lost her composure.
"How?"
"Daniel."
She cursed quietly.
"He always interferes."
Victor placed a folder on the table.
"Now we change the plan."
Isabella looked at him.
"What plan?"
Victor opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Photos.
Old reports.
"We don't destroy Khloe physically."
Isabella stared.
"Then how?"
Victor smiled.
"We destroy her publicly."
Later that morning, every major news outlet received the same anonymous package.
Inside:
Photos.
Documents.
Private information.
And one headline suggestion.
BILLIONAIRE'S PREGNANT WIFE HIDES DARK SECRET FROM THE PUBLIC
Within minutes, the internet exploded.
People who once praised Khloe began questioning her.
Comments spread.
Rumors multiplied.
And before Marcus could stop it...
the world saw Khloe Thorne differently.
Not as the billionaire's beloved wife.
Not as the future mother of his child.
But as a woman accused of hiding a secret.
Marcus watched the news from his office.
His security team worked around him.
Phones rang constantly.
Executives demanded answers.
Investors panicked.
But Marcus ignored everything.
Because on the screen was a picture of Khloe.
Next to a headline designed to destroy her.
WHO IS KHLOE THORNE REALLY?
Marcus clenched his fist.
Someone wanted the world against her.
Someone wanted her isolated.
Someone wanted him to doubt her.
But they had made one mistake.
A mistake everyone who attacked the Thorne family eventually made.
They underestimated Marcus.
He picked up the phone.
"Find Victor."
The security chief answered.
"Sir, we are searching."
"No."
Marcus's voice became colder.
"Find everyone who helped him."
A pause.
"Everyone?"
Marcus looked at Khloe's picture on the screen.
"Everyone."
Because this was no longer about saving an empire.
It was about protecting the woman who had unknowingly been carrying the truth for her entire life.

And Marcus was about to uncover the secret his family had buried for thirty years.
A secret that would change the Thorne name forever.
