Chapter 3: The Secret Agreement

The name on the photograph stayed on Marcus Thorne’s phone screen.
He stared at it for almost a full minute.
Not because he didn’t recognize the man.
Because he did.
And that was what made it impossible.
Victor Hale.
The man who had stood beside Marcus for fifteen years.
The man who had protected the Thorne family’s legal empire through hostile takeovers, corporate attacks, and inheritance battles.
The man Marcus trusted more than almost anyone alive.
Victor wasn’t just an attorney.
He was family.
At least...
that was what Marcus had believed.
Khloe watched his face carefully.
She had known Marcus long enough to understand something important.
He was not a man who showed fear.
Anger?
Yes.
Frustration?
Sometimes.
Determination?
Always.
But fear?
Almost never.
And right now, she saw it.
"Marcus."
He didn’t respond.
"Who is he?"
Marcus locked the phone.
"Someone who shouldn't be involved."
Khloe slowly sat up against the pillows.
"That doesn't answer my question."
He looked at her.
For a moment, he wanted to lie.
To protect her.
To tell her everything was under control.
That was what Marcus always did.
He carried the weight alone.
But Khloe had spent years proving she was not someone who needed to be protected from the truth.
She needed to stand beside him.
Not behind him.
"Victor Hale."
Her expression changed slightly.
"The family attorney?"
Marcus nodded.
"The man who knows every secret about the Thorne empire."
A cold silence filled the room.
Because both of them understood what that meant.
Someone with that level of access didn’t need to attack Marcus from the outside.
They could destroy him from within.
At 4:30 a.m., Marcus arrived at the Thorne Tower.
The headquarters of Thorne Global stood above the city like a monument.
Forty-eight floors of glass, steel, and power.
For decades, people had looked at the building and seen success.
Marcus looked at it and saw a battlefield.
His security team was already waiting.
"Mr. Thorne."
Marcus walked through the private entrance.
"Where is Victor?"
The head of security hesitated.
"That's the problem."
Marcus stopped.
"What problem?"
"He left the building two hours ago."
"Where did he go?"
"We don't know."
Marcus looked at him.
A dangerous silence followed.
"You don't know?"
The security chief swallowed.
"His access logs were manually erased."
Marcus's expression hardened.
Someone inside was helping Victor.
Again.
The same pattern.
Every piece of evidence disappeared.
Every trail went cold.
Someone was always one step ahead.
Marcus walked into the private elevator.
"Lock the building."
The security chief looked surprised.
"Sir?"
"No one leaves."
"Not even executives?"
Marcus pressed the button for the top floor.
"Especially executives."
The private office on the top floor had belonged to Marcus's father.
Thomas Thorne.
A man who built an empire by believing trust was a weakness.
Marcus had spent years trying to become different from him.
But standing there now...
he finally understood something.
His father wasn't paranoid.
He was prepared.
Marcus walked toward the old wooden desk.
Inside the first drawer was something he had never touched.
A handwritten note from his father.
Marcus opened it.
The paper was yellowed with age.
Only one sentence was written.
"The greatest threat to a king is not the enemy outside the castle. It is the person holding the keys."
Marcus stared at the words.
Then his phone rang.
Daniel Thorne.
His uncle.
The man from the hospital.
Marcus answered immediately.
"Tell me you found something."
Daniel didn't waste time.
"I did."
Marcus stood still.
"Where are you?"
"Your old family estate."
Marcus frowned.
"Why?"
"Because someone has been searching your father's archives."
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
"What archives?"
There was a pause.
"The ones your father hid from everyone."
Marcus looked at the old desk.
"What did they find?"
Daniel's voice lowered.
"That's what worries me."
Thirty minutes later, Marcus arrived at the abandoned Thorne family estate.
The mansion had been empty for years.
After his father's death, Marcus refused to sell it.
Too many memories.
Too many secrets.
Daniel waited inside the library.
The room smelled like old books and dust.
On the table were several documents.
Marcus walked closer.
"What are these?"
Daniel looked serious.
"Your father's private records."
Marcus picked up the first folder.
His eyes scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
The documents were not about business.
Not about companies.
Not about money.
They were about people.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Marcus looked confused.
"What is this?"
Daniel stared at him.
"Your father had been investigating someone."
"Who?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman.
Marcus recognized her.
His eyes widened.
"No."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus picked up the picture.
It was Khloe.
But younger.
Much younger.
Before they met.
Before their marriage.
Before she became part of the Thorne family.
Behind the photo was a handwritten note.
"The girl must never know the truth."
Marcus felt the room shift.
"What truth?"
Daniel looked at him.
"That's what Victor and Isabella are trying to find."
Marcus stared.
"You're saying this isn't about my company?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Then what is it about?"
Daniel's expression became darker.
"Your wife."
Meanwhile, across town, Isabella Rossi entered a private penthouse overlooking the city.
She removed her coat.
A man was waiting near the window.
Older.
Powerful.
Calm.
The kind of man who didn't need to raise his voice because everyone already feared him.
"You failed."
Isabella stopped.
"I did what you asked."
The man turned.
"No."
His eyes were cold.
"You created chaos."
"I exposed Khloe."
"You attacked her too early."
Isabella's jaw tightened.
"You said Marcus would break."
The man walked closer.
"He almost did."
"Almost?"
The man smiled.
"But then Daniel appeared."
Isabella looked away.
"He wasn't supposed to be there."
"Nothing goes wrong unless someone makes a mistake."
She looked at him.
"Are you blaming me?"
The man didn't answer.
Which was worse.
Isabella stepped closer.
"Remember something."
Her voice became sharp.
"I risked everything."
The man smiled.
"You risked nothing."
He placed a folder on the table.
Isabella opened it.
Her face slowly changed.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Old photographs.
And one name repeated again and again.
Khloe Thorne.
The man whispered:
"Your problem isn't that Marcus loves her."
Isabella looked up.
"Then what is my problem?"
The man smiled.
"Your problem is that Khloe doesn't know who she really is."
Back at the estate, Marcus continued reading.
Every page created more questions.
Khloe's past.
His father's investigation.
Victor's involvement.
Isabella's obsession.
None of it connected.
Until Marcus reached the final document.
A single page.
A handwritten confession.
His father's handwriting.
Marcus read the first line.
And his entire world stopped.
"Marcus, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect the woman who will become your wife."
His breathing changed.
Daniel watched silently.
Marcus continued.
"Khloe Thorne is not who everyone believes she is."
The paper trembled slightly in his hand.
Then he read the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
"She is the rightful heir to the empire you think belongs to you."
Marcus looked up.
His face was pale.
Because suddenly the attack in the hospital made sense.
Isabella wasn't trying to destroy his marriage.
Victor wasn't trying to destroy his company.
They were trying to erase Khloe.
Before she discovered the truth.
Before the world discovered the real owner of the Thorne empire.
And Marcus finally understood the terrifying reality.

The woman lying in that hospital room wasn't just his wife.
She was the biggest secret his family had protected for decades.
