Chapter 9 - The Trap Ethan Built

Megan told Ethan only one thing.

One sentence.

The sentence that changed his entire plan.

“Noah was never hidden from Claire.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“He was hidden from the person hunting Claire.”

“Who?”

Megan looked toward the window.

Making sure nobody was watching.

Then whispered:

“Someone who still lives in this house.”

Ethan felt the answer before he heard it.

“Natalie?”

Megan shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“Someone closer.”

Ethan’s heart tightened.

“Who?”

Megan didn’t answer.

Instead, she handed him an old envelope.

“This belonged to Claire.”

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

At the bottom was one name circled in red.

Not Richard.

Not Natalie.

Not even his mother.

Ethan stared.

Because the name belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had been helping him search for the truth.

Someone who had been standing beside him from the beginning.

His lawyer.

Daniel Cross.

Ethan looked up.

“No.”

Megan watched his reaction.

“That is why Claire hid everything.”

“Because she suspected Daniel?”

“Because she knew.”

Ethan felt betrayed.

Daniel had handled every legal matter after Claire’s death.

The estate.

The inheritance.

Sophie’s protection.

Everything.

If Daniel was involved…

then the entire foundation of Ethan’s life was built on a lie.

But Ethan did not confront him.

Not yet.

Instead, he created a test.

A trap.

He gave three different people three different pieces of false information.

To Natalie, he said the ledger was hidden in Switzerland.

To Richard, he said Noah had been found.

To Daniel, he said Claire’s original evidence was stored inside the family company archives.

Then Ethan waited.

Because whoever moved first would reveal themselves.

Twenty-four hours later…

someone broke into the company archives.

Ethan watched the security footage.

The person wore a mask.

Black clothing.

Careful movements.

Professional.

But when the person removed a glove…

Ethan saw the hand.

A familiar ring.

A ring he had seen thousands of times.

The Vale family crest.

The intruder turned toward the camera.

Almost as if they knew Ethan was watching.

Then they removed the mask.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Because the person standing inside the archive…

was not Daniel.

Was not Natalie.

Was not Richard.

It was someone impossible.

Someone Ethan believed was dead.

Someone Claire had spent her final days searching for.

Noah.

Ethan stared at the screen.

His missing brother.

The child nobody knew existed.

The secret Claire died protecting.

Alive.

And stealing the evidence that could destroy the Vale family.

The next morning, Ethan received a message.

One sentence.

From Noah.

“You should have left the music box broken.”

Ethan looked at the blue fragments sitting on his desk.

And finally understood.

The music box was never just a memory.

It was a warning.

May you like

A warning that someone in his family had been waiting five years…

for Ethan to open the door.
