Chapter 16 - The Truth Buried Under Two Families

Ethan left Margaret’s house with one thought repeating in his mind.
Daniel Cross was Margaret’s son.
The same Daniel who had handled every legal document after Claire’s death.
The same Daniel who had protected Ethan’s inheritance.
The same Daniel who had been shot after revealing the truth.
But now Ethan had a question he couldn’t ignore.
Was Daniel a victim?
Or was he another player?
The rain followed him home.
Heavy.
Cold.
Almost identical to the night Claire died.
A night Ethan had spent five years trying to forget.
When he entered the house, Sophie was sitting on the floor.
Surrounded by the broken pieces of the blue music box.
Ethan stopped.
“Sophie…”
She looked up.
“I was trying to fix Mommy’s box.”
His heart broke.
He walked toward her and sat down.
“You don’t have to fix everything.”
Sophie looked confused.
“But it was the only thing Mommy left me.”
Ethan picked up a broken piece.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Mommy left you something bigger.”
“What?”
He smiled sadly.
“Her love.”
Sophie hugged him.
For a moment, the entire world disappeared.
No Vale family.
No secrets.
No enemies.
Only a father and his daughter.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A tiny piece of paper beneath the broken glass.
He carefully removed it.
Another hidden message.
Claire’s handwriting.
But this time, it was not a warning.
It was a name.
“Margaret.”
Ethan froze.
Sophie noticed.
“Is that Aunt Margaret?”
Ethan looked at the paper.
“Yes.”
“Is she bad?”
The question hurt.
Because Sophie had loved her.
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
“I don’t know.”
And that was the hardest truth.
Later that night, Ethan met Noah again.
This time, Noah did not hide.
They sat in an abandoned office building where Noah had been staying.
“You found Margaret.”
Ethan looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because she knows you found me.”
Ethan studied him.
“You knew about her?”
Noah nodded.
“She was the reason Claire disappeared.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You said Claire was killed because of the ledger.”
“I said the ledger was part of it.”
Noah looked away.
“The real reason was the family war.”
“What family war?”
Noah took out an old photograph.
It showed two families.
The Vales.
And another group Ethan didn’t recognize.
“Before Richard created Vale Holdings, there was another family controlling everything.”
“Who?”
Noah answered:
“The Cross family.”
Ethan stared.
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Margaret married into them?”
“No.”
Noah shook his head.
“Richard destroyed them.”
The pieces began connecting.
“Why?”
“Because they knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
Noah looked directly at him.
“That the Vale empire was built on stolen power.”
Ethan felt sick.
“Daniel wanted revenge.”
“Yes.”
“And Claire?”
Noah’s face changed.
“Claire was caught between both families.”
Ethan looked down.
“My wife tried to stop a war.”
Noah nodded.
“She believed there was another way.”
“What happened?”
Noah became silent.
Then:
“She discovered the person controlling both sides.”
Ethan waited.
“Who?”
Noah looked at him.
“Someone neither family suspected.”
The answer frustrated him.
“Who?”
Noah whispered:
“Your mother.”
Ethan froze.
“Eleanor?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“She was not just hiding.”
Noah’s voice became darker.
“She was planning.”
Ethan returned home with more questions than answers.
But one thing was clear.
Nobody had been telling the whole truth.
Not Richard.
Not Eleanor.
Not Margaret.
Not even Claire.
The next morning, Eleanor disappeared.
Her room was empty.
Her bag was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A note.
For Ethan.
His hands shook as he opened it.
My son,
I know you are angry.
You should be.
But if you want the truth, you must find the place where Claire hid her final confession.
Not the music box.
Not the ledger.
The place she went when she knew she was going to die.
Ethan turned the paper over.
May you like
A location was written.
The old Vale family cemetery.
