Chapter 17 - Claire’s Final Confession

The Vale cemetery was abandoned.

No visitors.

No flowers.

No signs of life.

Only old stones and forgotten names.

Ethan walked between the graves.

The place felt wrong.

Like a secret had been buried there long before any person was.

He found Claire’s grave.

The same place he had visited hundreds of times.

But today was different.

Today he wasn’t mourning.

Today he was searching.

He looked around.

Nothing.

Then he remembered something.

Claire always hated flowers.

Not because she disliked them.

Because she said they covered things people didn’t want to see.

Ethan moved the stone vase beside her grave.

Underneath was a small metal key.

His breath stopped.

A key.

Hidden for five years.

He followed the clue to an old family mausoleum.

Inside was a small locked box.

The key opened it.

Inside was a recording device.

And a letter.

Ethan pressed play.

Claire’s voice filled the darkness.

“If you are hearing this, then I failed.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“No.”

Claire continued.

“But if I failed, it means the truth survived.”

A pause.

“I need you to understand something, Ethan.”

“I lied to you.”

His eyes opened.

The words hurt.

“I lied because I loved you.”

Claire continued.

“When I met you, I already knew who you were.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“I knew you were Richard Vale’s son.”

“I knew the secrets surrounding your family.”

“But I didn’t know the most dangerous secret.”

The recording crackled.

“The truth about your birth.”

Ethan listened.

“Richard did not create you to inherit the empire.”

“He created you to replace someone.”

A pause.

“Someone who was supposed to become the next leader.”

Ethan whispered:

“Noah.”

Claire’s voice continued.

“Yes.”

“Noah was the original heir.”

“Richard took everything from him.”

“But then I discovered something.”

A long silence.

“The person who helped Richard erase Noah’s identity…”

“was Eleanor.”

Ethan felt the air disappear.

His mother.

The woman who claimed to protect him.

The woman who claimed she was saving him.

Claire continued.

“She did it because she believed she was protecting you.”

“But she didn’t understand.”

“She was creating the same monster she feared.”

The recording paused.

Then Claire said the final words.

“The person who destroyed our family was not one person.”

“It was a choice.”

“A choice made by everyone who decided love was less important than power.”

The recording ended.

Ethan stood alone.

The truth was finally clear.

But it was worse than he imagined.

Nobody was innocent.

Not Richard.

Not Eleanor.

Not Margaret.

Not Daniel.

Not even the people who tried to save him.

Everyone had made choices.

Everyone had sacrificed someone.

Then Ethan noticed something else inside the box.

A final envelope.

Addressed to Sophie.

His hands trembled.

Because Claire had hidden a message for their daughter.

A message she never expected Ethan to read.

He opened it.

The first sentence destroyed him.

“Sophie, if your father is reading this before you are old enough, then the person I feared has returned.”

Ethan looked around the cemetery.

A feeling spread through him.

Someone was there.

Watching.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Congratulations, Ethan.”

He froze.

Richard.

“You finally found Claire’s confession.”

Ethan tightened his grip.

“Where are you?”

Richard laughed softly.

“Where I have always been.”

A pause.

“Behind everything.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?”

Richard answered:

“The same thing everyone wanted.”

A silence.

“The truth.”

Then Richard added:

“But you still don’t know the biggest secret.”

Ethan said nothing.

Richard whispered:

“Sophie is not just Claire’s daughter.”

The call ended.

Ethan stood frozen.

Because the one question he had never asked…

May you like

was suddenly the most terrifying one.

Who was Sophie really?
