Chapter 8 - The Brother Hidden In The Shadows

Ethan did not tell Sophie about Noah.
Not yet.
She was seven years old.
She had already lost her mother.
She had already watched the one thing connecting her to Claire break into pieces.
The last thing she needed was another truth that could destroy the world she understood.
But Ethan could not sleep.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the photograph.
Claire.
A baby.
A secret life.
A son.
For five years, he believed he knew the woman he loved.
Now he wondered if he had only known the parts she allowed him to see.
At midnight, Ethan sat alone in his office.
The flash drive Claire had hidden remained untouched beside him.
He was afraid of what it contained.
Not because he feared the truth.
Because he feared discovering that the truth would change everything.
Finally, he connected it to his computer.
A single folder appeared.
No title.
No password.
Only one file.
“E.”
His initials.
Ethan clicked.
A video opened.
Claire appeared on the screen.
His breath stopped.
She looked exactly as she did five years ago.
The woman he lost.
The woman whose voice he thought he would never hear again.
“Ethan.”
The recording began.
“If you are watching this, then something happened to me.”
Ethan covered his mouth.
His eyes burned.
“I wanted to tell you everything.”
Claire looked down.
“But I was afraid.”
A pause.
“Not because I didn’t trust you.”
“Because I trusted you too much.”
Ethan listened silently.
“You have always believed love means protecting people.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“But sometimes protecting someone means keeping them away from the truth.”
The video continued.
“Before I met you, I had a son.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
The words still hurt.
“His name is Noah.”
“He was taken from me.”
“Not legally.”
“Not officially.”
“But someone made sure I would never find him.”
The screen flickered.
Claire’s expression became serious.
“Noah carries something they want.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“What?”
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“Proof.”
The video paused.
Then continued.
“The Vale family built an empire.”
“Some of it was legitimate.”
“Some of it was not.”
“But the most dangerous thing was not the money.”
“It was the evidence.”
Ethan felt cold.
“What evidence?”
Claire answered as if she could hear him.
“A record of every crime committed to build the family fortune.”
“The original ledger.”
“The one everyone thought was destroyed.”
Ethan remembered Richard.
The fear in his eyes.
The question suddenly became clear.
Everyone wanted the ledger.
But why?
Claire continued.
“Noah was born with something connected to that ledger.”
Ethan frowned.
A baby?
How could a child hold evidence?
Then Claire said:
“Because the location of the ledger was hidden in his birth records.”
Ethan froze.
The video ended.
No explanation.
No final goodbye.
Only a black screen.
Ethan sat there for a long time.
Then he heard footsteps.
He turned.
Natalie stood at the office door.
“You watched it.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You knew about this video?”
“Yes.”
The answer made him angry.
“You knew everything.”
“No.”
Natalie stepped inside.
“I knew Claire recorded something.”
“But not what she said.”
Ethan stood.
“Then tell me what you know.”
Natalie hesitated.
“Claire believed Noah was alive.”
Ethan stared.
“You said you didn’t know where he was.”
“I don’t.”
“Then how do you know he’s alive?”
Natalie looked at him.
“Because someone has been paying for his protection.”
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Someone inside your family.”
The next morning, Ethan made a decision.
He would stop searching for answers.
And start forcing them to appear.
The first person he confronted was the only person left from Claire’s old life.
Her sister.
Megan.
For years, Megan had avoided the Vale family.
She never attended events.
Never visited the house.
Never spoke about Claire’s marriage.
Ethan always thought it was grief.
Now he wondered if it was fear.
When Megan opened the door, she immediately looked at Ethan’s face.
And knew.
“You found something.”
Ethan didn’t answer.
“You knew.”
Megan stepped back.
“I was hoping you never would.”
The words confirmed everything.
Ethan walked inside.
“Tell me about Noah.”
Megan closed the door.
Then locked it.
That small movement told Ethan more than words.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No.”
May you like
Megan looked terrified.
“You don’t.”
