Chapter 7 - The Child Claire Never Told Him About

Ethan stared at the photograph.

His mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.

Claire.

His wife.

Holding a newborn baby.

A baby who wasn’t Sophie.

A baby who looked no older than a few months.

“Sophie…”

His voice was barely audible.

“Where did you get this?”

The little girl looked nervous.

“Natalie dropped it.”

“Where?”

“In Mommy’s old drawer.”

Ethan looked upstairs.

The bedroom.

The room Claire had left behind.

The room he had avoided entering for years.

Because every object inside carried memories.

Her perfume.

Her books.

Her clothes.

The life that ended too soon.

But now that room contained another secret.

Ethan walked upstairs.

Sophie followed.

He opened the door slowly.

Nothing had changed.

That was the terrifying part.

Claire’s room looked frozen in time.

Like she might walk in at any moment.

Ethan opened the drawer beside the bed.

Empty.

Except for a small torn piece of paper.

He picked it up.

Only three words were written.

“Protect my son.”

Ethan felt dizzy.

“My son?”

Sophie looked confused.

“Daddy?”

He quickly hid the paper.

“It’s okay.”

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay anymore.

A knock came from behind.

Natalie.

She stood at the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“You found it.”

Ethan turned.

“You knew?”

Natalie closed her eyes.

“I knew Claire had a child.”

The answer felt like betrayal.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I couldn’t.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Natalie walked inside.

“Because everyone was trying to protect Sophie.”

“By lying to me?”

“By keeping her alive.”

The words stopped him.

“What does that mean?”

Natalie looked at the photograph.

“Claire’s son was the reason she died.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What son?”

Natalie sat down slowly.

“His name was Noah.”

The name felt strange.

A stranger’s name inside his own family.

“Where is he?”

Natalie looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I expect you to understand that Claire spent the last months of her life searching for him.”

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

“Because Noah was not just Claire’s child.”

A pause.

“He was the missing piece.”

“The missing piece of what?”

Natalie looked toward the broken music box.

“The Vale family secret.”

Ethan felt anger rising.

“You knew everything.”

“No.”

Natalie shook her head.

“I knew pieces.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Natalie hesitated.

Finally, she spoke.

“Claire wasn’t your wife when Noah was born.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“She had another life before you.”

“No.”

“She never told you because she believed the past would destroy you.”

Ethan stepped back.

“No.”

Natalie continued.

“Before Claire met you, she was connected to the Vale family.”

“How?”

Natalie looked at him.

“She was Richard Vale’s daughter.”

The room became silent.

Ethan couldn’t breathe.

His father.

Claire.

The same bloodline.

The same family.

The same secrets.

“No.”

Natalie whispered:

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at the photograph again.

Claire holding a child.

A child from a past she buried.

A child she died trying to protect.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice spoke.

“Ethan Vale.”

He recognized it.

The same voice from before.

“You found out about Noah.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

“Who are you?”

The voice ignored him.

“Your wife spent five years trying to find her son.”

A pause.

“But she failed.”

Ethan gripped the phone.

“Where is he?”

The answer came quietly.

“He is closer to you than you think.”

The call ended.

Ethan looked around the room.

At Natalie.

At Sophie.

At the photograph.

And for the first time…

he wondered if the greatest secret Claire had protected…

May you like

was not about who wanted her dead.

It was about who she was trying to save.
