Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Ethan did not sleep.

Not that night.

Not after learning that everything he believed about his family might be a carefully constructed illusion.

Sophie was asleep in the guest room.

The same room where Claire used to read bedtime stories.

The same room where the blue music box had sat on the shelf.

Ethan sat beside his daughter until sunrise.

Watching her breathe.

Watching her sleep.

Trying to understand how many lies surrounded them.

At 6:12 AM, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

For a moment, he considered ignoring it.

Then he answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

“Your wife was closer than you think.”

Ethan stood.

“Who is this?”

“You found Claire’s letter.”

His grip tightened.

“How do you know?”

A pause.

“Because I know everything happening inside that house.”

Ethan looked around.

The silence suddenly felt dangerous.

“Are you watching me?”

“No.”

The voice became colder.

“I’m protecting you.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Everyone who says that seems to destroy my life.”

The person ignored him.

“Listen carefully.”

“You have until tomorrow night.”

“For what?”

“To find the second half of the message.”

Ethan frowned.

“What message?”

“The one Claire hid from you.”

His heart stopped.

“There is more?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

The voice answered:

“Where Sophie first learned to walk.”

The call ended.

Ethan stood frozen.

The old family house.

The place Claire loved.

The place Sophie took her first steps.

The garden.

The memory came back instantly.

Claire laughing.

Sophie falling.

Claire crying tears of happiness.

That was impossible.

Unless Claire had hidden something there.

Ethan rushed outside.

The morning air was cold.

The wedding decorations were still everywhere.

A painful reminder of the life that no longer existed.

He walked toward the garden.

Toward the old wooden bench where Claire had spent hours with Sophie.

He searched beneath it.

Nothing.

He checked the flowers.

Nothing.

Then he remembered something.

Claire’s favorite place.

The small stone fountain.

The place where she always sat when she needed to think.

Ethan moved the stones around the fountain.

His fingers touched something.

Metal.

A small container.

Hidden beneath the ground.

Inside was a flash drive.

And another note.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Ethan.

If you found this, then I was right.

They came after me.

But they will come after Sophie next.

His breathing became heavier.

The next sentence was worse.

The person you trust most may be the person who brings them to her.

Ethan looked toward the house.

Toward everyone who had ever entered their lives.

Then the final line appeared.

The one that changed everything.

Do not let Natalie take Sophie.

Ethan dropped the paper.

Because now he had two impossible truths.

Claire trusted Natalie enough to work with her.

But Claire also feared Natalie enough to warn him.

And somewhere between those two truths…

was the answer.

A sound came from behind him.

Ethan turned.

A figure stood near the gate.

Watching him.

A man wearing a dark coat.

Ethan recognized him.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

The man who supposedly died eight years ago.

Richard Vale.

His father.

Alive.

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Ethan couldn’t speak.

The man stepped closer.

“You finally found the box.”

A cold wind moved through the garden.

Ethan stared at the father he had buried years ago.

Then Richard said the words that shattered the last piece of his reality.

“Your wife didn’t die because she discovered my secret.”

May you like

A pause.

“She died because she discovered yours.”
