CHAPTER 8 — THE FATHER WHO BUILT THE LIE

The man standing behind Daniel Whitmore looked like a ghost.

Not because he was transparent.

Not because he was weak.

But because everyone in that ballroom had spent years believing he no longer existed.

Richard Whitmore.

The architect of the Whitmore empire.

The man whose name appeared on skyscrapers, hospitals, investment funds, and political donations across the country.

The man who had supposedly died fifteen years ago after a private plane accident.

But he wasn't dead.

He was standing there.

Alive.

Emily stared at him.

Her mind struggled to process another impossible truth.

Another person who had disappeared.

Another person who had been hiding.

Another piece of her life that had been stolen from her.

Daniel looked completely different now.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect businessman image had disappeared.

He looked like a child standing in front of the father he had spent years fearing.

"Dad..."

His voice was barely audible.

Richard Whitmore smiled.

Not warmly.

Not proudly.

A cold, calculated smile.

"Look at you."

He slowly walked into the ballroom.

"Finally telling the truth."

Nobody moved.

Security officers reached for their radios.

But Richard didn't even look concerned.

Because men like him never entered a room without already knowing every possible exit.

Emily watched him carefully.

She had spent her entire life hearing stories about powerful men.

Men who controlled companies.

Men who controlled governments.

Men who could destroy people without ever raising their voices.

And now she understood.

Power did not always look violent.

Sometimes...

It looked calm.

Richard stopped in front of Emily.

"So."

He studied her.

"The Carter heir."

Emily felt anger rise inside her.

"Don't call me that."

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"I'm not an asset."

Her voice became stronger.

"I'm not a company."

"I'm not a project."

"I'm a person."

For the first time...

Something almost like amusement appeared on Richard's face.

"Your grandmother would have liked you."

Emily froze.

"You knew my grandmother."

Richard smiled.

"I knew Evelyn Carter very well."

Thomas stepped forward immediately.

"Stay away from my daughter."

Richard looked at him.

And laughed.

"Still pretending to be the protective father?"

Thomas's face tightened.

"You destroyed enough lives."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"No, Thomas."

A pause.

"You destroyed lives."

The accusation shocked everyone.

Thomas stared.

"What?"

Richard turned toward the crowd.

"Everyone wants a villain tonight."

He looked at Margaret.

"They blame my family."

Then Thomas.

"They blame me."

Then Catherine's voice playing through the speakers.

"They blame her."

He smiled.

"But nobody wants to admit the truth."

He pointed toward the screen.

"All three families built this monster together."

The room became silent.

Emily looked at her father.

"Is that true?"

Thomas didn't answer.

And once again...

His silence became the answer.

Emily closed her eyes.

Every truth she discovered revealed another lie underneath.

Richard continued.

"Project Eclipse was never just a medical system."

The screen behind him activated.

A new file appeared.

PROJECT ECLIPSE — PRIVATE INVESTMENT RECORDS

Names appeared.

Companies.

Governments.

Organizations.

Emily looked closer.

Then her expression changed.

"These are..."

Daniel finished the sentence.

"Investors."

Richard nodded.

"The most powerful people in the world."

Emily looked at him.

"And you wanted me to sign over control."

Richard smiled.

"Not exactly."

A pause.

"I wanted you to activate it."

The room froze.

Emily frowned.

"Activate?"

Richard walked closer.

"You misunderstand your inheritance."

He pointed at the screen.

"The system does not belong to you because you own it."

A pause.

"It belongs to you because only you can turn it on."

A cold feeling moved through Emily.

"Why?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because your grandmother designed it that way."

The screen changed.

A genetic report appeared.

Emily's name.

Her DNA profile.

Everyone gasped.

Daniel looked shocked.

"I didn't know about that."

Richard looked at him.

"You were never supposed to."

That sentence hurt Daniel more than any insult.

Emily looked at Richard.

"You tested me?"

Richard nodded.

"Years ago."

"When?"

A pause.

"When you were a child."

Emily felt sick.

"You've been watching me my entire life?"

Richard didn't deny it.

"Your grandmother created the ultimate safeguard."

He pointed at her.

"She made you the key."

Emily's hands shook.

"My grandmother turned me into a lock?"

Richard answered coldly:

"She turned you into protection."

Emily laughed.

A broken laugh.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Everyone keeps using that word."

She looked around the room.

"Protection."

A tear fell.

"But nobody protected me."

The words silenced everyone.

Even Richard.

Because for the first time that night...

Emily was not an inheritance.

Not a key.

Not a billion-dollar secret.

She was a woman who had been betrayed by everyone she trusted.

Then Catherine's voice returned.

"Emily..."

Everyone looked upward.

"There is one thing Richard isn't telling you."

Richard's expression changed.

"Catherine."

His voice became dangerous.

"Don't."

But Catherine continued.

"The reason he needed Daniel to marry you..."

Emily turned toward Richard.

"Wasn't just because of Project Eclipse."

A pause.

"It was because of your baby."

The ballroom went completely silent.

Emily instinctively placed a hand over her pregnant stomach.

Daniel's face turned white.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard didn't answer.

And that frightened Emily more than anything.

Catherine continued:

"Your child inherited something."

Emily's heartbeat increased.

"No..."

She looked at Daniel.

Then Richard.

Then Thomas.

"What did you do?"

Nobody spoke.

Finally...

Thomas whispered:

"Emily..."

His voice broke.

"There is a reason everyone has been fighting over you."

A pause.

"It's because they were never only after Project Eclipse."

The screen changed one final time.

A medical file appeared.

GENETIC INHERITANCE REPORT

Subject:

CARTER UNBORN CHILD

Emily's blood turned cold.

Someone had been tracking her baby.

Before the child was even born.

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Emily, listen to me..."

She stepped back.

"Did you know?"

Daniel froze.

The answer was written on his face.

Emily whispered:

"You knew."

Daniel looked devastated.

"Not everything."

A pause.

"But I knew they were interested in the baby."

Emily felt her heart shatter.

The man who promised to protect her...

Had known her child was in danger.

And he still married her.

Richard watched silently.

Then he said the words that changed everything:

"Your child is not just an heir."

A pause.

"Your child is the only person alive who can replace you."

Emily looked horrified.

"Replace me?"

Richard smiled.

"Because if anything happens to you..."

The lights suddenly went out.

And in the darkness...

A single sentence appeared on the screen.

"THE TRUE OWNER OF PROJECT ECLIPSE WILL BE BORN TONIGHT."

Emily grabbed her stomach.

And for the first time...

May you like

The fear was no longer about losing money.

It was about losing her child.
