CHAPTER 10 — THE TRAITOR INSIDE THE FAMILY

The ballroom had already witnessed enough betrayal to last a lifetime.

A fake theft.

A destroyed wedding.

A hidden inheritance.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

A family war that had been buried for decades.

But nothing prepared Emily Carter for the next revelation.

Someone inside her own family had tried to access her unborn child's medical records.

The room became completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

Emily stared at the security officer.

"Say it again."

The man hesitated.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Say it."

Her voice was sharper now.

"Someone attempted to access the private medical records of your unborn child."

Emily's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"Who?"

The officer looked uncomfortable.

He glanced at the crowd.

Then at the people standing closest to her.

"The request was authorized using a Carter family security code."

Everyone turned.

Thomas Carter immediately stepped forward.

"What?"

The officer continued.

"The code belongs to someone with level-one family clearance."

Emily looked at her father.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Richard.

Only a few people in the world had access to that system.

Her family.

Her blood.

Her enemies.

And her protectors.

Emily whispered:

"So one of you tried to reach my baby."

Nobody answered.

And once again...

Silence became a confession.

THE SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH

Security moved through the ballroom.

Guests stepped away.

Phones were collected.

Access records were displayed on the giant screen.

Everyone watched as the system opened.

MEDICAL ACCESS REQUEST

TIME: 8:47 PM

LOCATION: CALDWELL PRIVATE NETWORK

AUTHORIZED USER: CARTER FAMILY CLEARANCE

Emily stared.

"Caldwell?"

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

But Emily noticed something.

A small hesitation.

A fraction of a second.

And after everything that happened tonight...

She noticed every hesitation.

"You know something."

Daniel looked at her.

"Emily..."

"You know something."

He looked down.

Richard noticed.

And smiled.

"Interesting."

Daniel looked at his father.

"Don't."

Richard ignored him.

"Perhaps your husband should finally explain what happened before this wedding."

Emily turned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew.

The moment he had been trying to avoid had arrived.

THE CONTRACT BEFORE THE MARRIAGE

Daniel slowly walked toward the center of the ballroom.

"I didn't meet you by accident."

Emily's heart sank.

Even though she already knew...

Hearing it still hurt.

Daniel continued.

"My father arranged the first meeting."

A wave of whispers spread.

Emily stared.

"The charity event?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

The night they met.

The night she thought was fate.

The night she believed someone finally saw her.

It was planned.

"You knew who I was."

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

"You knew about Project Eclipse."

"Yes."

"You knew my family's secrets."

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

Every answer felt like another knife.

Emily laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"Was anything real?"

Daniel looked devastated.

"At first..."

He stopped.

Emily's expression changed.

"At first?"

Daniel looked away.

"At first, everything was a mission."

A pause.

"But then I fell in love with you."

Emily shook her head.

"Don't say that."

"Emily—"

"No."

She stepped back.

"Love doesn't begin with a lie."

Daniel had no response.

Because she was right.

THE SECRET FILE

Suddenly...

The giant screen changed.

A new document appeared.

Everyone turned.

The file was not from security.

It was uploaded remotely.

WHITMORE INTERNAL RECORDS

Richard's expression changed.

"No."

For the first time tonight...

He looked afraid.

Emily noticed.

"What is it?"

Richard didn't answer.

The file opened.

A contract.

A marriage agreement.

Between:

Daniel Whitmore

and

Emily Carter

But this was not a wedding contract.

It was a business agreement.

The first page showed the date.

Six months before their first meeting.

Emily's face went pale.

Six months.

Before they met.

Before they spoke.

Before Daniel ever looked into her eyes.

The marriage had already been planned.

Then the next page appeared.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

Gain access to Carter inheritance through emotional attachment.

The room erupted.

Emily couldn't breathe.

Daniel looked destroyed.

"I never signed that."

Richard replied coldly:

"You didn't need to."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"You were our investment."

The words crushed him.

Not a son.

Not a person.

An investment.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PLAN

Then another file appeared.

This time...

Everyone recognized the signature.

Margaret Whitmore.

But there was something strange.

The file was dated only two weeks ago.

After Daniel's wedding preparation began.

Emily stared.

"Margaret changed the plan."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

The screen showed new instructions.

UPDATE:

Marriage extraction strategy failed.

New strategy: Remove Emily's legal authority before birth of successor.

Emily felt cold.

"Before birth?"

The security officer nodded.

"Someone planned to remove your control over your assets before your baby was born."

Thomas stepped forward.

"They wanted guardianship."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas continued.

"If something happened to Emily during pregnancy..."

His voice became darker.

"Control of the inheritance would be transferred temporarily."

Emily whispered:

"To who?"

Nobody answered.

Then a name appeared.

TEMPORARY GUARDIAN: DANIEL WHITMORE

The entire ballroom froze.

Emily slowly looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked horrified.

"No."

He shook his head.

"No, I didn't know about that."

Emily wanted to believe him.

She wanted to.

But trust was something she no longer had.

Then Richard spoke.

"You see?"

He looked at Emily.

"Your husband was never supposed to be your enemy."

A pause.

"He was supposed to be your cage."

Daniel's face turned with anger.

"You used me."

Richard smiled.

"I created you."

And that sentence finally destroyed the last piece of Daniel's loyalty.

He stepped toward his father.

"You destroyed my life."

Richard laughed.

"No."

He looked at Emily.

"She did."

Everyone froze.

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"Because the moment you married Daniel..."

A pause.

"Project Eclipse activated."

The screen suddenly flashed.

SYSTEM STATUS: ACTIVE

Everyone stared.

Emily's blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Michael Reeves answered.

His face filled with fear.

"It means..."

He looked at Emily.

"Your grandmother's final protection has started."

A pause.

"And it means someone just triggered the countdown."

Emily looked at the screen.

A timer appeared.

72:00:00

Seventy-two hours.

Until something happened.

Michael whispered:

"Your grandmother built a final protocol."

Emily stared.

"What protocol?"

Michael looked at her.

"The destruction of Project Eclipse."

Silence.

"And if it cannot identify the rightful owner..."

A pause.

"It destroys everything connected to it."

Emily looked terrified.

Including companies.

Including accounts.

Including information.

Including lives.

Then a final message appeared.

"IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED."

Below it...

A single question.

"WHO DO YOU TRUST?"

Everyone looked at Emily.

Because the system was not asking for a password.

It was asking her to make the one decision she had avoided all night.

Choose someone.

Her father.

Her husband.

Her family.

Or herself.

Emily stared at the screen.

And slowly...

She understood.

The real test had never been about inheritance.

It was about whether she could finally stop letting powerful people decide her life.

She stepped forward.

And pressed one name.

EMILY CARTER.

The system went silent.

Then a new message appeared.

"WELCOME BACK, ORIGINAL OWNER."

Everyone froze.

Because Project Eclipse had just recognized her.

And somewhere in the city...

Someone watching the live feed whispered:

"She's awake."
