CHAPTER 12 â THE FATHER WHO BETRAYED HIS OWN DAUGHTER

The name remained on the screen.
AUTHORIZED CONTROL ATTEMPT: THOMAS CARTER
Nobody looked at Richard.
Nobody looked at Margaret.
Nobody looked at Daniel.
Every person in the ballroom turned toward Emily's father.
Thomas Carter.
The man who had spent the entire night pretending he was the only person who wanted to protect her.
Emily stared at him.
And somehow...
This betrayal hurt more than all the others.
Because enemies were expected to hurt you.
But fathers were supposed to stand between you and danger.
"Dad..."
Her voice was quiet.
Almost broken.
"Tell me that isn't true."
Thomas looked at his daughter.
And for a moment...
Emily saw something she had not seen all night.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because Thomas knew the truth had finally caught him.
"Emily..."
She shook her head.
"No."
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
"Don't explain."
A pause.
"Don't tell me you were protecting me."
The words cut deeper than any accusation.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
She looked around the ballroom.
"Everyone keeps using that excuse."
Her hand moved protectively over her stomach.
"But somehow..."
Her voice trembled.
"Every person who claimed to protect me was the person who hurt me."
The room became silent.
Thomas lowered his head.
Because there was no defense against the truth.
THE SECRET THOMAS HID FOR YEARS
Michael Reeves stepped toward the screen.
"The system doesn't make mistakes."
He looked at Thomas.
"The attempt came from your personal authorization."
Thomas finally spoke.
"I didn't try to steal Project Eclipse."
Emily stared.
"Then what did you try to do?"
Thomas remained silent.
That silence was enough.
Daniel stepped forward.
"You tried to lock her out."
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas's expression changed.
Daniel continued.
"You weren't trying to take control."
A pause.
"You were trying to stop her from accessing it."
Emily looked confused.
"What?"
Michael quickly checked the records.
Then his face changed.
"He's right."
The screen updated.
CONTROL ATTEMPT TYPE: ACCESS RESTRICTION
Not ownership transfer.
Not theft.
Restriction.
Emily looked at her father.
"Why?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
Because he knew there was no more hiding.
"I was trying to protect you."
Emily's expression hardened.
"There it is again."
Thomas stepped closer.
"But this time it's true."
She looked away.
"No."
Her voice was cold.
"You don't get to say that anymore."
Thomas swallowed.
"I knew what would happen if you activated Project Eclipse."
Emily turned back.
"What would happen?"
Thomas looked at the screen.
"The world would come after you."
A pause.
"Governments."
"Corporations."
"People more powerful than anyone in this room."
He looked at her.
"I spent twenty years trying to keep you invisible."
Emily laughed sadly.
"Invisible?"
She shook her head.
"I spent my entire life wondering why my father disappeared."
A pause.
"Why my family was broken."
"Why I never knew the truth."
Her eyes filled.
"And now you tell me you were protecting me by letting me grow up without you?"
Thomas had no answer.
Because he knew.
His greatest mistake was believing love without honesty was still love.
THE NIGHT EMILY DISAPPEARED
Thomas looked toward the screen.
"There is something you don't know."
Emily didn't respond.
But she listened.
"Twenty years ago, when your grandmother discovered what Project Eclipse had become..."
A pause.
"She didn't just hide the system."
"She hid you."
Emily frowned.
"I was a child."
Thomas nodded.
"Exactly."
The screen changed.
Old records appeared.
A young Emily.
A hospital file.
A security report.
Emily froze.
"Why is there a hospital record from when I was eight?"
Thomas looked away.
"Because someone tried to take you."
The room went silent.
Daniel looked shocked.
"What?"
Thomas continued.
"They knew Evelyn had chosen you."
"They knew you were the successor."
"So they came after you before you were old enough to understand."
Emily stared.
"Who?"
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation terrified her.
"Who?"
Thomas whispered:
"The Whitmores."
Everyone turned toward Richard.
Richard remained calm.
Almost too calm.
Emily looked at him.
"Did you try to take me?"
Richard smiled.
"No."
A pause.
"But I knew someone who did."
Michael stepped forward.
"Who?"
Richard looked toward Thomas.
And said:
"Your own mother."
The ballroom froze.
Emily felt the air disappear.
"My mother?"
Thomas immediately reacted.
"Richard, don't."
But Richard continued.
"Catherine Carter wasn't the victim everyone believed."
Emily stared.
"No."
Her voice became smaller.
"No, my mother died because of this."
Richard looked at her.
"Your mother died because she tried to expose it."
A pause.
"But before she did..."
He looked at Thomas.
"She made one final deal."
Emily turned slowly toward her father.
"What deal?"
Thomas's face went pale.
The answer terrified him.
Because Catherine's secret was the one thing he had spent decades burying.
THE LETTER FROM CATHERINE
Michael suddenly noticed something inside the hidden box.
"There is another file."
The screen opened.
A private message.
Sender:
CATHERINE CARTER
Emily's heart stopped.
"My mother?"
Michael nodded.
The recording began.
Catherine appeared on the screen.
Younger.
Tired.
But determined.
"Emily..."
Her voice shook.
"If you are seeing this, then I failed to protect you."
Emily covered her mouth.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Her mother continued:
"I need you to know something."
A pause.
"Your father did not betray me."
Everyone looked at Thomas.
"He saved my life."
Emily froze.
"What?"
Catherine continued.
"But he also made the biggest mistake of his life."
The screen flickered.
"Because he trusted the wrong person."
A photograph appeared.
Catherine.
Thomas.
Evelyn.
And another person.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone Emily recognized.
Someone she had not expected.
Her own grandfather.
THE REAL ENEMY
Michael whispered:
"No..."
Thomas stepped backward.
Because he knew.
Emily looked at the photograph.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
Then Richard spoke.
"Your grandfather was the first person who tried to weaponize Project Eclipse."
Emily's eyes widened.
"My grandfather?"
Richard nodded.
"He created the first version."
A pause.
"Your grandmother tried to stop him."
Emily looked at Thomas.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Thomas's voice broke.
"Because I promised your mother."
"What promise?"
Thomas looked at her.
"That you would never know how dangerous your own family was."
Emily stared at him.
And slowly...
She understood.
Everyone had been fighting over Project Eclipse.
But nobody had been protecting it.
They were protecting themselves from the truth.
Then suddenly...
The security alarms changed.
Not a warning.
An attack.
Michael looked at the system.
His face lost all color.
"Someone breached the main server."
Emily looked at the screen.
A new message appeared.
EXTERNAL CONTROL ATTEMPT DETECTED
Then a name appeared.
Everyone froze.
Because the attacker was not inside the ballroom.
The attacker was someone they thought was dead.
ALEXANDER CARTER
Emily whispered:
"My grandmother's son..."
The screen displayed one final message.
"EMILY CARTER, YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO CHOOSE WHICH FAMILY DIES."
The ballroom went silent.
Because the war had changed.
It was no longer about money.
It was no longer about power.
It was about choosing who would survive.
And Emily realized the most terrifying truth of all:
May you like
Her family had not been destroyed by outsiders.
They had been destroying each other for decades.
